A provocative reassessment of Gestalt therapy. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Wheeler takes Gestalt therapy in a whole new direction in this book, bridging the gap between Fritz Perls' biologistic thinking and Husserlian phenomenology. The so-called "resistances to caontact" become "styles of contact" in Wheeler's vision. For the philosophicaly minded, this is reminiscent of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty. For the clinically minded, Wheeler takes Gestalt therapy from its unfortunate preoccupation with 'technique' toward a thoroughly practical assessment and intervention of the total clinical field. The extraordinary thing is how he bridges between the foundational theoretical precepts of Gestalt theory and the concrete praxis of the practicing clinician. This book will change the the way you practice your craft on a day to day basis.

Editorial Review:

Wheeler's classic study, a best-seller in the field, placed the Gestalt therapy model squarely in the social-constructivist tradition of Lewin, Goldstein, and Goodman. In so doing, it brought mainstream attention to the integrative power of the Gestalt approach.

an enabling, supportive reference source for therapists 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is packed, without being written to intimidate. Sections are clearly headed, inviting use of the book as a reference.

As my understanding and interests in gestalt therapy evolve, so do different sections strike me differently.

Zinker is a coach, who leans over my shoulder as I consider my approach to helping others. The tone is unequivocal: encouraging and articulate.

Zinker has been been immersed in the field to such depths that his writing shows evidence of integration of his findings. He covers gestalt therapy; a difficult topic to write about. He spells out his findings about working with families and does so in an aesthetic, almost spiritual.

Yet, I also find the book written with an intellectual rigour that invites revisiting. It's written in a can-do, leading edge manner.

Editorial Review:

Drawing on a wealth of detailed, fully annotated clinical examples from his more than 30 years of experience, Joseph Zinker, founder and leader of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, offers a hands-on guide that is both philosophical and concrete. He demystifies the process of Gestalt therapy, describing exactly how he goes about conducting the session--how he sets it up, what he says, what he looks for, follows, supports, and why.

Editorial Review:

This is the first full-length historical study of Gestalt psychology--an attempt to advance holistic thought within natural science. Holistic thought is often portrayed as a wooly-minded revolt against reason and modern science, but this is not so. On the basis of rigorous experimental research and scientific argument as well as on philosophical grounds, the Gestalt theorists Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka opposed conceptions of science and mind that equated knowledge of nature with its effective manipulation and control. Instead, they attempted to establish dynamic principles of inherent, objective order and meaning in current language, principles of self-organization in human perception and thinking, in human and animal behavior, and in the physical world. The impact of their work ranged from cognitive science to theoretical biology and film theory. Based on exhaustive research in primary sources, including archival material cited here for the first time, this study illuminates the multiple social and intellectual contexts of Gestalt theory and analyzes the emergence, development and reception of its conceptual foundations and research programs from 1890 to 1967.

A loving, clear-sighted appraisal 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In this excellent intellectual biography, Taylor Stoehr presents a loving, clear-sighted appraisal of Paul Goodman's contributions to the formulation and practice of Gestalt Therapy. With telling anecdotes from Goodman's life, and a deft handling of the psychotherapeutic concepts, Stoehr summons a vivid picture of the therapy's development.

This book is a welcome corrective to the tendency of Fritz Perls' larger-than-life persona to overshadow the contributions made by Goodman and others.

It is also a highly illuminating companion read for anyone tackling Goodman and Perls' psychological magnum opus "Gestalt Therapy".

For those looking for a capsule synopsis of Goodman's psychological work, I recommend Stoehr's pithy introduction to his edited volume of Goodman's briefer writings on psychology, "Nature Heals"

Editorial Review:

University of Massachusetts, Boston. Reference on the origins of Gestalt therapy from the standpoint of Paul Goodman, its chief theoretician. For psychotherapists.

Body process 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Simple and understand abele book on how our body react and processes our life experiences.

Editorial Review:

Revealing that a client's posture, movements, and bodily experiences are indeed relevant to therapy, Kepner offers an insightful framework for incorporating these aspects into a therapeutic framework. This comprehensive treatment explains how body work can be integrated with the aims, methods, and philosophy of psychotherapy, offering a framework within which practitioners of different theoretical approaches can better appreciate body processes in the context of the whole person, rather than as isolated events. 8/93.

Editorial Review:

Gestalt Therapy has been developing steadily for the last 50 years in America as well as in Europe. It is currently practiced in different settings: individual, group, and family therapies; personal growth; and social, medical and business organizations.

This book is written mostly for beginners and for psychotherapy clients: it summarizes the central philosophy of this approach and the main techniques for the enrichment of contact. It includes sketches, charts, indexes, a glossary and a bibliography, which help make the concept come alive. It also explains, in an accessible way, the latest discoveries concerning the brain (neurosciences), dreams and sexuality.

Serge Ginger puts forth a specifically French approach: a synthesis of the French culture (greatly influenced by psychoanalysis) along with a mobilizing and interactive method, emphasizing the cycle of contact, evoking the emotions, the body and the right hemisphere of the brain.

It is a new, optimistic approach to human relations.

Action Metaphors 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book covers topics like action metaphors where you can experience a gestalt of the whole experience that also covers nonverbal elements. This is something which talking therapies cannot always capture. Often talking therapies get sidetracked into partial elements where the whole snapshot of that present moment is missed.

Editorial Review:
