Concise History on the Lives of Two Great Men 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Hayward does a wonderful job in only 170 short pages of describing the similarites between Churchill and Reagan. It is a very quick read and will leave you feeling good about these two men and the accomplishments they achieved while in office.

Hayward makes this statement, "Greatness is ultimately a question of character: Good character does not change with the times: it has eternal qualities." Are there any great leaders with character today? As in the lives of Churchill and Reagan, history will tell.

Editorial Review:

The Unexplored Connections Between Two of History’s Greatest Leaders

Ronald Reagan and Winston Churchill were true giants of the twentieth century, but somehow historians have failed to notice the many similarities between these extraordinary leaders. Until now.

In Greatness, Steven F. Hayward–who has written acclaimed studies of both Reagan and Churchill–goes beneath superficial differences to uncover the remarkable parallels between the two statesmen. In exploring these connections, Hayward shines a light on the nature of political genius and the timeless aspects of statesmanship–critical lessons in this or any age.

In under 5 minutes?? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If something appears too good to be true, it usually is. The author's shameless self promotion is another give away, but take a look at one of his principles----(skip the 5 minute idea and see the news programs where FBI agents; the best in the US, take 4 hours for a full interview...--

the principle the author says is that when someone is lying, they don't give many details because IT NEVER HAPPENED.

Look at the Casey Anthony case. We have INCREDIBLE details (literally). We have not only a fake "nanny", but we get a full description, relatives, car accident, injury, injury follow up, and on and on and on. TMI: TOO MUCH INFORMATION.

Liars will pile on details, but what they lack is SENSORY descriptions. When a rape victim says "his hands smelled like motor oil" it is likely true. It was, sadly, something that stuck in her mind.

A good interview takes hours.

Mark McClish: I Know You Are Lying is a standard for Law Enforcement. It is a skill to be aquired and it will never be done in 5 minutes, nor in the time it takes to read a book. It takes lots and lots of practice, and although someone with training and LOTS of practice may pick up possible deception early on, it takes time to establish: is this a lie? is it withholding information? and if so, WHY?

This is more like an Informercial where the author uses Amazon to bang on his own drum. This is not something professionals ever need to do; their work speaks for them.

Pass on the fluff. I would recommend StatementAnalysis dot com as a good starting point.

People who are good at this are not "human lie detectors"; they are just very good at picking up deceptive language, which is far more telling than body language. Try interviewing someone who gives the signals of deception with his legs, only later to learn that with ADHD off medicine, his legs move like that ALL the time; not just when being interviewed.

Language is the key.

How did Solomon discern between who's baby it was? Language.
What did the Bible say, centuries ago? "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth doth speak".

Although some body language and eye movement is helpful, it is only in conjunction with good, old fashioned listening...THAT is something that takes time to cultivate.

Check out McClish's excellent work. Go to findarticles dot com and read some of the FBI's published papers on statement analysis and deception. You will be glad you did, if you are interested in cultivating the skill of learning when being lied to.

Editorial Review:

From the acclaimed bestselling author of The Conquerors

Michael Beschloss's dramatic and inspiring saga explores crucial times when a courageous President changed the history of the United States. With surprising new sources and a dazzling command of history and human character, Beschloss brings these flawed, complex men -- and their wives, families, friends and foes -- to life as if in a gripping novel. Never have we had a more intimate, behind-the-scenes view of Presidents coping with the supreme dilemmas of their lives.

In Presidential Courage you will witness George Washington braving threats of impeachment and assassination to make peace with England; John Adams, incurring his party's "unrelenting hatred" by refusing to fight France and warning, "Great is the guilt of an unnecessary war;" Andrew Jackson, in a death struggle against the corrupt Bank of the United States; Abraham Lincoln, risking his Presidency to insist that slaves be freed, as well as the crushing ordeals faced by Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan.

As Beschloss shows, none of these Presidents was eager to incur ridicule, vilification or threats of political destruction and even assassination. But in the end, each ultimately proved himself to be, in Andrew Jackson's words, "born for the storm."

Editorial Review:

Once upon a time, Martians and Venusians functioned in separate worlds. But in today's hectic and career-oriented environment, relationships have become a lot more complicated, and men and women are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress. To add to the increasing tension, most men and women are also completely unaware that they are actually hardwired to react differently to the stress. It's a common scenario: a husband returns home from work stressed out and eager to kick back on the couch and watch television. A wife returns home from work stressed out and wants to talk about it with her husband. What happens? Neither is on the same page, anger and resentment set in, and Mars and Venus collide.

Using his signature insight that has helped millions of couples transform their relationships, John Gray once again arms the inhabitants of Mars and Venus with information that will help them live harmoniously ever after. In Why Mars and Venus Collide, Gray focuses on the ways that men and women misinterpret and mismanage the stress in their daily lives, and how these reactions ultimately affect their relationships. "It's not that he's just not into you; he needs to fulfill a biological need," Gray explains. "And it's not that she wants to henpeck you; she also has a biological drive." He shows, for instance, how a husband's withdrawal is actually a natural way for him to replenish his depleted testosterone levels and restore his well-being, and how a woman's need for conversation and support helps her build her own stress-reducing hormone, oxytocin.

Backed up by groundbreaking scientific research, Gray offers a clear, easy-to-understand program to bridge the gap between the two planets, providing effective communication strategies that will actually lower stress levels. Whether in a relationship or single, this book will help both men and women understand their new roles in a modern, work-oriented society, and allow them to discover a variety of new and practical ways to create a lifetime of love and harmony.

Editorial Review:

You recognize when you know something for certain, right? You "know" the sky is blue, or that the traffic light had turned green, or where you were on the morning of September 11, 2001--you know these things, well, because you just do.

In On Being Certain, neurologist Robert Burton shows that feeling certain—feeling that we know something--- is a mental sensation, rather than evidence of fact. An increasing body of evidence suggests that feelings such as certainty stem from primitive areas of the brain and are independent of active, conscious reflection and reasoning. In other words, the feeling of knowing happens to us; we cannot make it happen.

Bringing together cutting-edge neuroscience, experimental data, and fascinating anecdotes, Robert Burton explores the inconsistent and sometimes paradoxical relationship between our thoughts and what we actually know. Provocative and groundbreaking, On Being Certain challenges what we know (or think we know) about the mind, knowledge, and reason.

Awful 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought it thinking it was going to be interesting - it is hard to read because it is so bad.

My father picked it up and read a few pages and had to put it down because it was so bad.

Don't waste your time or money - not really about 2012, more about the author and whatever ego/mind trip he was on.

Nicely written but....... 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is nicely written and interesting. I agree that there are things going on that we do not understand. I do agree that something will happen in 2012 as far astrological alignments are concerned. Whether or not they are for the good or bad. That is to be determined. I personally think this author has done too much acid. This book as nothing really to do with Quetzalcoatl at all. He talks primarily about crop circles and his relationship with his childs mother going down the drain due to drugs. I think this book is his own healing process.

Editorial Review:

The acclaimed metaphysical epic that binds together the cosmological phenomena of our time, ranging from crop circles to quantum theory to the resurgence of psychedelic drugs, to support the contention of the Mayan calendar that the year 2012 portends a global shift-in consciousness, culture, and way of living-of unprecedented consequence.

READ this! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was revolutionary to me. If you are considering purchasing it, do so and read it! What a concept, that we need to apologize in a language that the person receiving the apology can hear it and accept it.

Must Read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Everyone has been wronged and done done wrong to others. Appoligising is not being weak. It is admitting that we are human and make mistakes. This book helped me to show that I am truely sorry for what I have done. It showed me how to let the other person know that I am sincere. It also helped to truely forgive.

Editorial Review:

How many ways are there to say “I’m sorry?” Well, it

depends on your language of apology.

Just as you have a different love language, you also hear and

express the words and gestures of apology in a different language.

Best-selling author Gary Chapman has teamed with counselor

Jennifer Thomas to explore the different languages of apology and

reach a whole new audience with this easy to follow and quickly

applicable communication tool.

Must read for public safety leaders 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My team and I recently had the opportunity to hear Colonel Kolditz speak at the 2007 Water Rescue Conference. We were so impressed with his presentation that we ordered a few copies for the team when we got back. Once I picked this book up, I found it hard to put down. It is by far the best leadership book I have ever read. I have read dozens of them and picked up some leadership tools from each, but none compare to the valuable lessons to be learned in this book. It made me cognizant of countless improvements that I could make in relation to the way I lead my people. Unfortunately in the public safety business you have to be prepared to deal with internal tragedy. The chapter in this book that covers what to do when internal tragedy strikes will leave leaders prepared for the unthinkable.

Editorial Review:

In this extraordinary book Col. Kolditz explains that his research on in extremis leadership, where followers perceive their lives to be threatened, reveals that the leadership lessons and principles in evidence in dangerous settings also apply to leading in business and everyday life. The book shows how leadership literally defines the promise of hope or future life and that extremely capable leaders are needed in all walks of life. The book describes a variety of high-risk situations that are ideal settings to seek and find great leaders, assess how they might be different, and to glean valuable insights for extraordinary leadership in our everyday lives. Through heart-stopping real-life stories of leaders in these extreme situations, Kolditz insists that leaders at all levels can improve their effectiveness.

Editorial Review:

A business parable about how companies can achieve remarkable results by helping their employees fulfill their dreams

Managing people is difficult. With disengagement and turnover on the rise, many managers are scratching their heads wondering what to do. It’s not that we don’t dream of being great managers, it’s just that we haven’t found a practical and efficient way to do it. Until now . . .

The fictional company in this remarkable book is grappling with real problems of high turnover and low morale -- so the managers begin to investigate what really drives the employees. What they discover is that the key to motivation isn’t necessarily the promise of a bigger paycheck or title, but rather the fulfillment of crucial personal dreams. They also learned that people at every level need to be offered specific kinds of help and encouragement -- or our dreams will forever remain just dreams as we grow dissatisfied with our lives and jobs.

Beginning with his important thought that a company can only become the-best-version-of-itself to the extent that its employees are becoming better-versions-of-themselves, Matthew Kelly explores the connection between the dreams we are chasing personally and the way we all engage at work. Tackling head-on the growing problem of employee disengagement, Kelly explores the dynamic collaboration that is unleashed when people work together to achieve company objectives and personal dreams.

The power of The Dream Manager is that simply becoming aware of the concept will change the way you manage and relate to people instantly and forever. What’s your dream?
