Editorial Review:

Are boys and girls really that different?

Twenty years ago, doctors and researchers didn’t think so. Back then, most experts believed that differences in how girls and boys behave are mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends.

It's hard to cling to that belief today. An avalanche of research over the past twenty years has shown that sex differences are more significant and profound than anybody guessed. Sex differences are real, biologically programmed, and important to how children are raised, disciplined, and educated.

In Why Gender Matters, psychologist and family physician Dr. Leonard Sax leads parents through the mystifying world of gender differences by explaining the biologically different ways in which children think, feel, and act. He addresses a host of issues, including discipline, learning, risk taking, aggression, sex, and drugs, and shows how boys and girls react in predictable ways to different situations.

For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and those differences increase as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely, boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away to hear the teacher—especially if the teacher is female.

Likewise, negative emotions are seated in an ancient structure of the brain called the amygdala. Girls develop an early connection between this area and the cerebral cortex, enabling them to talk about their feelings. In boys these links develop later. So if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often literally cannot say.

Dr. Sax offers fresh approaches to disciplining children, as well as gender-specific ways to help girls and boys avoid drugs and early sexual activity. He wants parents to understand and work with hardwired differences in children, but he also encourages them to push beyond gender-based stereotypes.

A leading proponent of single-sex education, Dr. Sax points out specific instances where keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Despite the view of many educators and experts on child-rearing that sex differences should be ignored or overcome, parents and teachers would do better to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.

Editorial Review:

Gardner's seminal 1993 account of the practical applications of Multiple Intelligences theory is now completely updated and expanded to reflect the latest developments in the field

Howard Gardner's brilliant conception of individual competence has changed the face of education in the twenty-three years since the publication of his classic work, Frames of Mind. Since then thousands of educators, parents, and researchers have explored the practical implications and applications of Multiple Intelligences theory--the powerful notion that there are separate human capacities, ranging from musical intelligence to the intelligence involved in self-understanding.

The first decade of research on MI theory and practice was reported in the 1993 edition of Multiple Intelligences. This new edition covers all developments since then and stands as the most thorough and up-to-date account of MI available anywhere. Completely revised throughout, it features new material on global applications and on MI in the workplace, an assessment of MI practice in the current conservative educational climate, new evidence about brain functioning, and much more.

Not a reader friendly book. 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Wood is intelligent and provides a lot of good information in this textbook. This was chosen for the course I teach before I took the position and if I had my way, we would have found a different book. It is not that the information is bad, it is just that Ms. Wood becomes very repetitive. About half of the first six chapters seem to drag on and most of the time restates the same thing from an earlier chapter or from the same chapter. I like what she has done with discussing multicultural issues, but some of it seems to be patronizing to the reader. I think another edition should be done and making the chapters shorter and more readable (Chapter 1 goes on for 78 pages -- which lost my attention, so I know my students had the same problem.) In the course review, the textbook generally gets a poor or below average rating. I can not give you a recommendation, as I am in the middle of searching for a better option.

Editorial Review:

Shows undergraduate students how an understanding of current communication theory and research will help them understand their own interpersonal encounters. Learning features include summaries, key concepts, and discussion questions, plus color photos. This edition devotes greater attention to social diversity, and contains expanded material on communication patterns in marriage and on ethical issues. Wood teaches communication at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. This is a revised edition of Everyday Encounters, which was published in 1996.

Must have! A guide to help manifest your innermost dreams and desires. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must have no matter what profession, period of life, stage of relationship you are in or not in. I have personally read all of Laura Day's Books and this book is the perfect book to start with.
I have also trained with her in practical intuition... and other skills and can tell you first hand that you do have the power to manifest anything you want into your life. I have many stories full of validations of her techniques.
We are blessed that Laura Day has chosen to spell out in such specific and simple detail the fact that we all have the ability to improve that which we have allowed ourselves to lose over the years as we become adults... and that is trusting our own intuitive abilities. In the Circle, she shows you just how strong the power of a single wish can be. Just how strong a manifestor you already are if you just had the proper tools to call those desires/wishes forth. Laura Day teaches these tools to you. There is no limit to what you can accomplish in your life or the extent of the happiness and love you can give and receive. You are already welcome in the circle.
I have given this book as gifts to, too many people to list here today and the changes in their lives have been amazing.

Now in a specially priced hardcover edition, here is the beloved guide that shows how the power of one simple wish can transform your entire life.

Editorial Review:

This work serves as a clear, cogent description of the process of emotionally focused marital therapy (EFT) - which, at the same time, illuminates the promise this technique offers. While most of the literature in this area is based on the idea of intervention being primarily behavioral (with emotion considered as secondary at best, and disruptive at worst) this book identifies the role of emotion in marital distress, and then reveals its potential to play a central role in successful marital therapy. The Practice of Emotionally Focused Marital Therapy includes: A model for short-term, effective marital therapy Relevant theory of adult love and marital stress Change strategies with many clinical examples Nine steps in the process of change, together with key change events Step-by-step guide to intervention at specific points in therapy Specific ways to address a partners emotions to create new interactions and bonding events Applications of techniques with families This important new volume presents EFT as a powerful therapeutic technique for practicing professionals, and also serves as an instructive graduate-level text for courses in marital therapy, psychology, social work, and counselling.

Looked for artistic inspiration and found an unpleasant political agenda 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I've lurked on Danny Gregory's Everyday Matters Yahoo group since Jan. 2008. I heard glowing reviews, I added his blog to my RSS feeds, I listened to all his podcasts, and I watched his videos. I was already aware of some of the book's shortcomings (his drawing instructions are a bit sparse, the hand-lettered text can be difficult to read, and his cartoonish style isn't everyone's cup of tea). Still, I thought it would be the push I needed to start creating beautiful illustrated journals.

"The Creative License" is such a colorful, warm, and inviting book that it was only on the second reading that disturbing bits started to fit together. I sensed a lot of hostility against Israel. It was only when I started paying closer attention to the scattered sketches of Jerusalem and reading the commentaries that everything fell into place. I had never thought to search his blog for Jerusalem and Israel. I did and I was stunned ("I have never liked this country much. I abhor its politics, its arrogance and its disproportionate impact on the global community").

Now don't get me wrong--everyone has a right to their own political beliefs and his blog is where it belongs. I just don't think it belongs in a book on creating illustrated journals and I'm disappointed that I paid good money for a book that makes me cringe. It's a pity because apart from this political agenda, the book is very useful. It does a good job of instilling enthusiasm and fostering creativity.

However, I should mention one drawing that particularly disturbed me, on page 175. It is a sketch of the Old City of Jerusalem that also appears in his blog, [....]. This view is from the Haas Promenade, to the south of the city. In the sketch, Danny Gregory has moved the security wall about 4 kilometers to the west, so that it appears to cut straight through the village of Silwan ("now the Israelis are constructing a new [fence], the Geder, which snakes across the landscape and prevents people from becoming suicide bombers, earning a living, or freely visiting their friends and family"). Is this what Danny Gregory means by "creative license"?

Editorial Review:

When Danny Gregory's life was turned upside down by tragedy, he learned to cope by teaching himself to draw. The result was a complete transformation of his life, his priorities, his career, and the way he saw the world. In handwritten chapters full of his lush watercolor illustrations, Danny now offers readers a program for reconnecting to their own creative energies, using drawing as an example. He gently instructs us in the art of allowing ourselves to fail, giving up the expectation of perfection and opening our eyes to the beauty around us. The result is the permission to express ourselves fully and take part in the creative process without fear. Artist or not, readers of all stripes will find inspiration in this unique and beautiful book.

I have been looking for this book for 2 years. I had one that is 17 years old. I was very surprised to fine one that was nice and new. I purchased and then bam, it was here by mail.

    Thanks so much,.

    Editorial Review:

Millions of people around the world spend a few moments each day in quiet reflection with a Karen Casey meditation book. The author's signature work, Each Day a New Beginning, was the first daily meditation book for recovering alcoholic women. When published in 1982, the book had no competition, yet many wondered whether a market existed for such a work. Twenty-five years and more than three million copies later, what became known as the little green book continues to sustain old and new readers alike. This limited edition features a new introduction by Casey, the original text, and original cover art. While many daily meditation books have been modeled after Each Day a New Beginning, no author can match Casey's reassuring guidance and gentle wisdom for sustaining lifelong recovery.

A Masterful Work 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Pinel's Biopsychology is a masterful work. I can only imagine the immense amount of time and effort that has gone into it. I don't think you can find another book in this field that appeals to such a wide range of readers. I have used this book and previous editions of it as the primary text in the graduate Biopsychology courses I have taught over the past 8 years. This book has consistently earned accolades from my students for presenting what is an otherwise complicated and highly technical subject, in a graspable and witty manner.

    Editorial Review:

B> The fifth edition of the book is the most major revision yet. Written in a friendly and engaging manner, Biopsychology clearly presents the fundamentals of the study of the biology of behavior but makes the topics personally and socially relevant to the reader. Four interwoven themes support the major recent developments in the rapidly changing field of biopsychology. Thousands of new references and dozens of new topics have been added to this edition, making Pinel's discussion of and focus on the human element easy and interesting to read. For those interested in physiological and biological psychology.

Inspirational to say the least 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm a recent college grad. and I took this book with me while I backpacked through most of Western Europe. I read it within the first 3 weeks of my adventure and it made a difference on how I saw the rest of the trip (which lasted another 9 weeks). I honestly slowed down to experience more, to take it all in. I became better friends with my two buddy's who were traveling with me, the sites seemed that much more intriguing and beautiful, and I met dozens of people, who I probably would have met if I hadn't read the book, or had, but it helped me to see things about them in a different light.

The use of stories and interviews helped to make this book so interesting. While there is more to life, then these 5 ideals, they have changed as well as reinforced many of my beliefs. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs enlightenment about their life, and everyone around them.

    Editorial Review:
