Great Anger Handbook 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Wonderful explanations of what anger is, how to recognize the feelings, how to express the feeling in a healthier way and how to problem solve. My daughter loved the examples of dialogue as they were accurate samples of what she deals with on a daily basis with her peers at school. I appreciated the fact that we could pick it up and read any chapter without reading the entire book. My daughter has also benefited by reading a book called Angry Octopus: A Relaxation Story. She feels empowered by both of these books and is now implementing taking a deep breath to calm her anger just as the octopus does in Angry Octopus. It is a winning combination.

Editorial Review:

Blending tips and ideas with jokes and cartoons, this book speaks directly to kids (ages 9-12). It shows kids that anger is normal and can be expressed in many ways - some healthy, some not. It teaches them how to recognise anger in themselves and others, how to deal with situations and emotions that lead to or mask anger, and how to deal with the anger they feel.

Editorial Review:

Men are right. The “relationship talk” does not help. Dr. Patricia Love’s and
Dr. Steven Stosny’s How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It
reveals the stunning truth about marital happiness:

Love is not about better communication.
It's about connection.

You'll never get a closer relationship
with your man by talking to him like you
talk to one of your girlfriends.

Male emotions are like women's sexuality:
you can't be too direct too quickly.

There are four ways to connect with a man:touch, activity, sex, routines.

Men want closer marriages just as much as women do,but not if they has to act like a woman.

Talking makes women move closer;
it makes men move away.

The secret of the silent male is this:
his wife supplies the meaning in his life.

The stunning truth about love is that talking doesn’t help.

Have you ever had this conversation with your spouse?

Wife: “Honey, we need to talk about us.”
Husband: “Do we have to?”

Drs. Patricia Love and Steven Stosny have studied this all-too-familiar dynamic between men and women and have reached a truly shocking conclusion. Even with the best of intentions, talking about your relationship doesn’t bring you together, and it will eventually drive you apart.

The reason for this is that underneath most couples’ fights, there is a biological difference at work. A woman’s vulnerability to fear and anxiety makes her draw closer, while a man’s subtle sensitivity to shame makes him pull away in response. This is why so many married couples fall into the archetypal roles of nagging wife/stonewalling husband, and why improving a marriage can’t happen through words.

How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It teaches couples how to get closer in ways that don’t require “trying to turn a man into a woman.” Rich in stories of couples who have turned their marriages around, and full of practical advice about the behaviors that make and break marriages, this essential guide will help couples find love beyond words.

Do you have what it takes to succeed in your career?

The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not IQ, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of expertise. The single most important factor in job performance and advancement is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is actually a set of skills that anyone can acquire, and in this practical guide, Daniel Goleman identifies them, explains their importance, and shows how they can be fostered.

For leaders, emotional intelligence is almost 90 percent of what sets stars apart from the mediocre. As Goleman documents, it's the essential ingredient for reaching and staying at the top in any field, even in high-tech careers. And organizations that learn to operate in emotionally intelligent ways are the companies that will remain vital and dynamic in the competitive marketplace of today--and the future.

Comprehensively researched, crisply written, and packed with fascinating case histories of triumphs, disasters, and dramatic turnarounds, Working with Emotional Intelligence may be the most important business book you'll ever read.

Braestrup tells true stories of love the emerge from loss. tragedy and fear 5 out of 5 stars.

Kate Braestrup decided to become an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, after her husband suddenly died in a car accident. With humor, she portrays herself as "The Plucky Widow," as she completes her seminary training and accepts the position of chaplain to the Maine Warden Service. She is chaplain to game wardens, not prison wardens. Her role is assisting victims and families during search and rescue missions in Maine. She relates detailed stories of these missions, and the varying spiritual needs of families, game wardens, police officers and search victims. There are tales of lost children and found children, bereaved families and families that curse the newly dead. With vivid detail, empathy, and occasional wit, she examines loss, tragedy, hope and meaning especially through difficult times. Her stories are powerful testimony to ordinary people giving and receiving love during times of loss and tragedy.

Editorial Review:

HERE IF YOU NEED ME is the story Kate Braestrup's remarkable journey from grief to faith to happiness - as she holds her family together in the wake of her husband's death, pursues his dream of becoming a minister, and ultimately finds her calling as a chaplain to search-and-rescue workers. It is dramatic, funny, deeply moving, and simply unforgettable--an uplifting account offinding God through helping others, and of the small miracles that happen every day when a heart is grateful and love isrestored.

A fool and his life can be quickly parted. Since 1993, Wendy Northcutt has memorialized hundreds of anonymous idiots with her Darwin Awards. If you go to her website at www.DarwinAwards.com you can see the criteria that she uses for honoring these unfortunates.

This latest offering is morbidly entertaining. How many ways can a person die? How many ways can a person die as the result of a stupid, self-inflicted accident? Apparently, the possibilities are endless.

This is a very funny book in a very sick way. There's something hilarious about these ridiculous demises and tragic maimings. I'm not sure what it is? It's not ghoulish, just foolish.

There, but for the grace of a slightly higher IQ (I hope), go I.

Editorial Review:

Evolution takes a giant step forward with the fifth edition of the New York Times bestselling phenomenon.

The human race’s most popular humor series returns with a new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, The Darwin Awards Next Evolution shows how uncommon common sense still is.

It worked for us 5 out of 5 stars.

All I can say is I had problems with a good kid. The school's guidence counsler recommended Reviving Ophelia. I couldnt put it down.

It doesnt tell you what to do but it does give an understanding of what young girls are up against and what may be going through their heads. In our case it was spot on. With this knowledge you can pry and get a feeling what might be in your kid's head.

Some people are giving this book a basic rating. I dont know how they could unless they have an ax to grind or bigger issues than those in the book. As a layman I'll take a book of case studies over one person's opinion any day. No mold fits all

Best to you and your kids.

Editorial Review:

The phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller. More than 1.5 million copies sold. Now available from Riverhead.

This is the groundbreaking work that poses one of the most provocative questions of a generation: Why are American adolescent girls falling prey to depression, eating disorders, suicide attempts, and dangerously low self-esteem? Dr. Pipher posits that it's America's sexist, look-obsessed "girl-poisoning" culture-one in which girls are constantly struggling to find their true selves. In Reviving Ophelia, these girls' uncensored voices are heard from the front lines of adolescence. Personal and painfully honest, this is a compassionate call to arms, offering strategies with which to revive these Ophelias' lost senses of self.

Editorial Review:

As the pace of technological change accelerates, we are increasingly experiencing a state of information overload. Statistics show that we are interrupted every three minutes during the course of the work day. Multitasking between email, cell-phone, text messages, and four or five websites while listening to an iPod forces the brain to process more and more informaton at greater and greater speeds. And yet the human brain has hardly changed in the last 40,000 years.
Are all these high-tech advances overtaxing our Stone Age brains or is the constant flood of information good for us, giving our brains the daily exercise they seem to crave? In The Overflowing Brain, cognitive scientist Torkel Klingberg takes us on a journey into the limits and possibilities of the brain. He suggests that we should acknowledge and embrace our desire for information and mental challenges, but try to find a balance between demand and capacity. Klingberg explores the cognitive demands, or "complexity," of everyday life and how the brain tries to meet them. He identifies different types of attention, such as stimulus-driven and controlled attention, but focuses chiefly on "working memory," our capacity to keep information in mind for short periods of time. Dr Klingberg asserts that working memory capacity, long thought to be static and hardwired in the brain, can be improved by training, and that the increasing demands on working memory may actually have a constructive effect: as demands on the human brain increase, so does its capacity.
The book ends with a discussion of the future of brain development and how we can best handle information overload in our everyday lives. Klingberg suggests how we might find a balance between demand and capacity and move from feeling overwhelmed to deeply engaged.
