Editorial Review:

As busy as teachers and scholars are, rarely do they find the time to sample widely from the table of scientific inquiry. This book offers the opportunity to do just that. The fourth volume in the "Studies in Perception and Action" series, it contains a collection of posters presented at the Ninth International Conference on Perception and Action, sponsored by the International Society for Ecological Psychology.

Like its predecessor, this volume is a collection of short reports, mostly empirical in nature. The reports are considerably larger than the abstracts presented in the proceedings of many conferences, and provide the authors with opportunities to present arguments, methods, results, and conclusions in condensed forms.

Editorial Review:

This is the fifth volume in an evolving series known collectively as "Studies in Perception and Action." It features papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Perception and Action held in Edinburgh, Scotland in August of 1999. This series provides a unique insight into the evolution of research on the ecological approach to perception and action. Each volume presents new research, almost always at the cutting edge of the discipline, and gives a special place to younger scientists whose work contains the seeds which will determine the future growth and direction of the discipline. Studies in Perception and Action V thus offers the reader not just a cross-section of leading research at a given point in time, but a mini-history of ecological psychology and its development. In this regard it is already notable how many of the 'younger scientists' in the 1991 volume have become leading figures of the field today.

Editorial Review:

This research monograph describes a large programming project in which an underwater organism, capable of perceiving, learning, deciding, and navigating, is computationally simulated. The developed computational model serves as a contemporary theory of perceptual-motor performance, embodying much of what is known about human vision and some of what is known about other cognitive processes. This artificial intelligence project has substantial contributions to make to the development of autonomous underwater vehicles. It also makes a specific theoretical statement about the organization and nature of organic perceptual motor systems that may be useful to psychologists, neuroscientists, and theoreticians in a number of other fields.

Editorial Review:

This book appraises the main theoretical ideas currently characteristic of the motor behavior field, bringing together contributions from many internationally known scientists who are doing this important research. Much of the work presented utilizes new recording techniques aimed at obtaining a complete kinematic account of how movement is executed. The motor behavior field as described in this volume is dominated by approaches which emphasize the dynamics and kinematics of movement. There is also an emphasis on new electrophysiological measures. The volume is organized into several sections based on specific themes. Chapters contained in each section discuss many currently debated questions in the field concerning motor mechanisms and their implementation for motor control.

Editorial Review:

Since the classic studies of Woodworth (1899), the role of
vision in the control of movement has been an important
research topic in experimental psychology. While many early
studies were concerned with the relative importance of vision
and kinesthesis and/or the time it takes to use visual
information, recent theoretical and technical developments
have stimulated scientists to ask questions about how
different sources of visual information contribute to motor
control in different contexts.

In this volume, articles are
presented that provide a broad coverage of the current
research and theory on vision and human motor learning and
control. Many of the contributors are colleagues that have met
over the years at the meetings and conferences concerned with
human movement. They represent a wide range of affiliation and
background including kinesiology, physical education,
neurophysiology, cognitive psychology and neuropsychology.
Thus the topic of vision and motor control is addressed from a
number of different perspectives. In general, each author sets
an empirical and theoretical framework for their topic, and
then discusses current work from their own laboratory, and how
it fits into the larger context. A synthesis chapter at the end of the volume identifies commonalities in the work and suggests directions for future experimentation.

Editorial Review:

Offering coverage of movement disorders, this book is directed at the practicing neurologist and psychiatrist. The contributors provide theoretical understanding and practical clinical guidance in their broad but detailed coverage. In the field of movement disorders it is often unclear where neurology ends and psychiatry begins. This spectrum of disorders is now recognized as primarily organic rather than psychogenic, while at the same time mental influences can clearly produce brain-mediated changes in the body. The book integrates basic science with clinical information and aims to provide the practising clinician with all of the information required for the successful management of movement disorders.

Editorial Review:

Goal-directed movement is central to the relationship between brain and behavior in humans and other animals. This book presents a detailed investigation of the topic, one that integrates psychology and physiology. The author's account is based on a large body of experimental data from human and animal work, with particular emphasis on clinical cases. It probes such questions as: Are complex movements organized on the same mode as simple ones? How rigidly organized are coordinated actions like orienting or grasping? Where do visual feedback signals arise? The author's work takes into account the growing acceptance of the idea that movements are not directly dependent upon sensory events, but that they are governed by internal representations which are built according to specific, experimentally accessible rules.
