An engrossing read into Emotional Brain 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What makes this book a good read? Primarily, the answer has to be that the subject is important and interesting for anybody who has for once wondered 'why was I not my real self when faced with fear/anxiety?' or 'Just if I could have held my emotions under control there?' Secondly, the area of work seems to be in its primitive stage. And accordingly, there are not many alternate books to be devoured if somebody is interested in this subject.

As far as the author - Joseph LeDoux -is concerned, I like his way of approaching the whole problem of making progress in understanding emotional brain. Not using the mental tools he has been handed by academics he had the intelligence to go where his research took him. Having said that, I would like to add, that the whole account could have been presented in a better way. Some could argue, he has done decent job at explaining complexities in simple terms for any layman to understand. I agree. Just that Daniel Gilbert's excellent work at that - in Stumbling on Happiness - has created an anchor in my mind.

Overall, I would not hesitate in recommending this book to anybody who wants to understand the emotional aspect of our mind.

Editorial Review:

Examines emotions and psychological disorders from a biological perspective, analyzing what emotions are, how they operate in the brain, and how they influence everyday lives. 20,000 first printing.

Outward and Upward 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Jamison writes near the opening of this work, "Exuberance is an abounding, ebullient, effervescent emotion. It is kinetic and unrestrained , joyful , irrepressible." She tells us Exuberance "lures us from common places and quieter moods." It "carries us to places we would not otherwise go".
Here she studies examples of Exuberance from a wide variety of areas of life. There are politicians like T.R. F.D.R. and Winston Churchill. There are scientists like James Watson and Richard Feynmann. She looks at legendary characters like 'Snowflake' Bentley whose enthusiasm and passion for a wonder of nature led him to become the world's great expert and student of it. Perhaps because she has written of Literary figures and creativity in another work she does not focus on Literary figures here.
She does however repeatedly show us how 'exuberance' moves towards greater creativity and towards real expansion of self and world. Jamison is an excellent, and learned writer with an ability to study both the natural and human worlds and make them come alive for the reader. I learned a great deal from this work, and I believe all interested in human life and character have much to learn from it.
I have a certain reservation about the book which may say more about me than the book itself. Though the book is about 'Exuberance' and gives wonderful examples of how exuberance has moved others in life- the feeling in reading the work for me was not 'exuberance'. Some times one reads and one feels one is on a great adventure and opening up new worlds. Here I no doubt was learning new things, but I did not feel the great joy of exuberance. I did feel that when reading Jamison's most well- known work her great memoir 'An Unquiet Mind'. But this is perhaps because that book treated a subject , 'Manic-Depression', which meant so much to me personally, and I felt was being illuminated in remarkably new and yet familiar way.
In any case this is a book which hopefully will inspire many to better feeling about themselves and their own personal adventures.
While reading it I kept thinking of this verse from Emily Dickenson.

"Exulation is the going
Of an inland soul to sea
Past the houses , Past the headlands
Into Deep Eternity.

Bred as we among the mountains
Can the sailor understand
The Divine Intoxication
Of the First Leagues out from Land?"

Editorial Review:

With the same grace and breadth of learning she brought to her studies of the mind’s pathologies, Kay Redfield Jamison examines one of its most exalted states: exuberance. This “abounding, ebullient, effervescent emotion” manifests itself everywhere from child’s play to scientific breakthrough and is crucially important to learning, risk-taking, social cohesiveness, and survival itself.

Exuberance: The Passion for Life introduces us to such notably irrepressible types as Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir, and Richard Feynman, as well as Peter Pan, dancing porcupines, and Charles Schulz’s Snoopy. It explores whether exuberance can be inherited, parses its neurochemical grammar, and documents the methods people have used to stimulate it. The resulting book is an irresistible fusion of science and soul.

Right on target 5 out of 5 stars.

If you've ever seen Patsy Clairmont in person, you know how well she uses humor to get across important points and insights. If you haven't seen her in person, this book has a DVD included that shows many excerpts from various talks she's given, and you can identify with her from watching them.
You will be laughing right along with the audience, and then an ah-ha will hit you. The book is a great gift for the younger set who are just starting to see what real life is all about and an encouragement to all women of faith.

Editorial Review:

We women are wonderfully made, but, boy, we sure are emotionally intricate. With her trademark conversational style and wit, Patsy Clairmont tackles a subject most women feel at a loss to approach-their feelings.

I Second That Emotion takes one of Patsy's most popular topics at the Women of Faith conferences and shows how you can deal with a turbulent emotional life.

I Second That Emotion pulls some of our emotions out to examine them individually. Think of this book, study guide, and DVD as a spa-a place to be refreshed, revived, and even repaired a little. Don't allow life to push your emotional buttons till you have an emotional meltdown. Instead, let God help you get untangled.

Emotions Play A Big Part in Relationships of All Kinds. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Historians explore the early experiences of Lincoln, Churchill, Einstein, Hitler, and Napoleon to find the beginnings of the motivation which shaped their careers. Attempting to learn why people do what they do in particular places and times help to understand their motivations and the consequences. Basic reality is that each and every person is living in and reacting to his environment in different ways at different times. Cyclical changes take place according to the immediate environments and the participants in this drama called life.

This scholar used a 'mnemonic visual scheme' to aid the readers in selecting the approaches needed in any given situation. Some of us continue to make the mistake of reacting "in kind" a destructive devise which causes misery for all -- and total confusion for the male species, as he's never wrong.

When unusual behavior of an individual arouses speculation, his changed patterns are questioned in a psychological manner. Like having a dual personality to explain the unexpected reactions to a puzzling situation, referring to desires, wishes, or impulses. I admit that on occasion I have been pushed to resort to impulsive behavior when challenged in an abusive manner.

No matter what Freud proclaimed, no one can go back in time to relive his life in a different sequence and pattern. There is currently a new movie out with this silly aspect. What we are now is a product of past experiences, and this can't be changed. What can is a person's attitude (thanks WM); many attitudes taught to children as 'black and white,' 'right and wrong,' or 'good and bad' become "gray" when they become adults. It's called a double standard.

Attitude is the person's probable response pattern. When he reacts in a manner not usual for him, it is declared boldly that he has a "bad attitude." Good attitude means suppressing the way a person really feels (feelings are judgments of momentary experiences, not a bad thing all-in-all). To hold an attitude about something, he must have experienced or learned about that something at an earlier point in time. These earlier responses are the "core" of his present attitudinal experience. Who's to say he is wrong? It's been proven that initial learning and early learning establish attitudes very firmly. Attitude can be altered as a result of the persuasion of some respected person of greater age or experience!

Reacting emotionally involves impulsive, overly energetic attacks on some features of the immediate situation; these emotional episodes are usually disruptive while they are occurring. What scholars forget is that there was a "cause" to make one respond with so much emotion. Nothing happens without a cause. Are we to be motivated to become liars, fakes, and hypocrites in today's society, not high (rich folks') society. All of that is falseness of the worst sort.

Cognitive factors appear to be indispensable elements in any formulation of emotion; distinguishing between reactive facial responses in emotional situation, and facial expressions in social communication -- who can see your expression in e-mail? Phone conversations reflect the hurt you've endured and are much better at working things out to suit each participant in the explosive situation. Leaving things left unsaid is the worst possible solution.

Editorial Review:

This book walks psychologists through the study of motivation, exploring all conditions that exist within the person and within the environment and culture that explain why we want what we want and why we do what we do. The fifth edition expands on theoretical ideas further into practical applications, especially in the areas of education, work, therapy, sports, and the home. Each chapter features a chapter box that addresses a specific concern. At the end of each chapter is a list of recommended readings for further study. Psychologists will discover a number of new ideas, including achievement goals, personal strivings, types of extrinsic motivation, implementation intentions, and more.

A post-impressionistic view of childish rage! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Clever, clever, clever.

But that was not my first impression of "When Sophie Gets Angry--Really, Really Angry..." The first time I read this book, I was appalled. How did this book earn the Silver Medal in the Caldecott award ranking? I thought the story was simplistic and the illustrations garish and awful!

Months later, today, when I reread the book, I "got" it! And totally changed my opinion! Oh, what fun I will have sharing this book with the little ones in the school library where I work!

So, what is the difference? Why was it awful one day and clever and visionary months later? First, we must decide the nature of anger. What is anger? How is it expressed? What happens when anger takes an ugly turn? How may a child safely express anger? Is it possible?

A simple event rattles the cage of Sophie's anger. Sophie's little sister wants to play with the same stuffed gorilla that Sophie is playing with. The mother sides with the sister. (Whether Mother is right or wrong is irrelevant to this story. What causes anger is not the issue here. The issue is how one deals safely with anger to dissipate its poison without making it part of one's being. Poisonous anger can then fester into something much worse.)

This is the place that first repulsed then amazed me. Molly Bang's illustrations of Sophie's anger are really grotesque but VERY effective. Here is also what I missed the first time.

Impressionistic paintings are impressions of the object being painted: that blur of action, that showing of movement in one space, that play of light, that moment in time. Post-Impressionism grew out of those concepts. "This is a painting on canvas and not the real thing" became the mantra of the post-impressionists, meaning reality is not on the canvas. They took color to the extreme. What if color portrays the feelings behind the moment?

Molly Bang is just brilliant in using color to portray Sophie's anger. Here is her image in vivid red using a huge fist to smash things to smithereens juxtaposed against first tinted then intense purple walls and yellow floors. Everything in the angry scenes is outlined in red. The floorboards gather up to create Sophie's impending volcanic rage ready to really explode.

Sophie runs outside and runs and runs. In these pictures, everything is still outlined in red. The viewer can really feel that anger. "Then, for a little while, she cries." Images are now outlined in various hues of purple and red-purple. After all, purple is a blend of red and blue. Then she climbs her favorite tree, a beech tree near the ocean, and, of course, it is outlined in blue, the calmest of colors.

There's more, but you "get" the picture, don't you? Molly Bang has told her story in words, yes, but also in color. As I flipped back through the book, I thought that the words could be eliminated and the reader would know exactly what the story is about. Oh yes, this book is very deserving of the Silver Medal.

Note: The Gold Medal winner in 2000 was "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" by Simms Taback. This was a righteous win!

Editorial Review:

Everybody gets angry sometimes. And for children, anger can be very upsetting. In this Caldecott-honor book, children will see what Sophie does when she gets angry. Parents, teachers, and children can talk about it. People do lots of different things when they get angry. What do you do?

I love this author's books and have Food For Thought already. This How Are You Peeling? book is a step beyond the former because it goes beyond simply labeling and illustrating emotions. In elementary poetic rhyme, it asks questions of the reader and gives simple hypothetical scenarios to which the child can respond. (This author's books are fun to take to the grocery store with your young child. My child enjoyed matching the fruits and vegetables on the shelves to those photographed in the book.)

cute pics, cheap book 3 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Unhappiness, says bestselling author Harriet Lerner, is fueled by three key emotions: anxiety, fear, and shame. They are the uninvited guests in our lives. When tragedy or hardship hits, they may become our constant companions.

Anxiety can wash over us like a tidal wave or operate as a silent thrum under the surface of our daily lives. With stories that are sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking, Lerner takes us from "fear lite" to the most difficult lessons the universe sends us.

We learn:

  • How a man was "cured in a day" of the fear of rejection -- and what we can learn from his story
  • How the author overcame her dread of public speaking when her worst fears were realized
  • How to deal with the fear of not being good enough, and with the shame of feeling essentially flawed and inadequate
  • How to stay calm and clear in an anxious, crazy workplace
  • How to manage fear and despair when life sends a crash course in illness, vulnerability, and loss

  • How "positive thinking" helps -- and harms

  • How to be our best and bravest selves, even when we are terrified and have internalized the shaming messages of others

No one signs up for anxiety, fear, and shame, but we can't avoid them either. As we learn to respond to these three key emotions in new ways, we can live more fully in the present and move into the future with courage, clarity, humor, and hope. Fear and Other Uninvited Guests shows us how.

Editorial Review:

You can feel it when it hits you. Your face flushes and your vision narrows. Your heartbeat increases as judgmental thoughts flood your mind. Your anger has been triggered, and you're about to say or do something that will likely make it worse.

You have an alternative. By practicing the Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process you can use that anger to serve a specific, life-enriching purpose. It tells you that you're disconnected from what you value and that your needs are not being met. Rather than managing your anger by suppressing your feelings or blasting someone with your judgments, Marshall Rosenberg shows you how to use anger to discover what you need, and then how to meet your needs in constructive ways.

This booklet will help you apply these four key truths:
- People or events may spark your anger but your own judgments are its cause
- Judging others as "wrong" prevents you from connecting with your unmet needs
- Getting clear about your needs helps you identify solutions satisfying to everyone
- Creating strategies focused on meeting your needs transforms anger into positive actions
