Spiritual Intelligence 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a book I've been awaiting for years. Roberts develops a relevant understanding of the relationship between human emotions and Christina spirituality. His in-depth theological, psychological, philosophical, and ethical study culminates with a practical examination of the fruit of the Spirit. He highlights the process of Christlike character development that leads to our inner life increasingly reflecting the inner life of Christ.

Both rigorous and readable, "Spiritual Emotions" should be required reading for Christian counselors, pastors, psychologists, and students. The narrative examples and the theological formulations will engage minds and encourage hearts.

What Emotional Intelligence: 10th Anniversary Edition; Why It Can Matter More Than IQ was in the last decade for the secular thinker, "Spiritual Emotions" will be in this decade for the Christian thinker.

Editorial Review:

You are what you eat, but why are you eating so much? Your moods! Why can't you stay with a reasonable exercise program, and why is obesity at epidemic proportions in our society today? Negative moods hold the explanations.
Feeling down? Wish you had more energy and less stress? If this describes you some or most of the time, you are probably among the millions today who respond to increasing stress and low moods with food--a candy bar, or perhaps a cup of coffee and a sweet. Such "emotional eating" may temporarily boost your spirits, but this effect is a short-lived quick fix that perpetuates chronic overeating and obesity. Moreover, the same negative moods that have grown to substantial proportions in society today, sap your resolve to exercise.
In this breakthrough book, an acclaimed mood researcher tackles the problem of overweight and inactivity from the perspective of mood. Thayer compellingly argues that it is our moods--beyond nutritional needs--that signal our bodies to desire food we really don't need in order to replenish our energy and to lower stress levels. Consciously or unconsciously, we constantly seek "calm energy" to face the challenges of the day. Eating is often our first response to a bad mood--as opposed to other, less-fattening forms of self-medication, like listening to music or just slowing down--but, as Thayer explains with clarity and abundant scientific research, we would do much more to raise our spirits in the long run by something as simple as a ten minute walk. Various forms of exercise are proven mood regulators in ways this book describes in detail. Sound like common sense? Perhaps, but if the choice is exercise or a snack, the snack usually wins out unless we understand our moods. This understanding is the real key. We must see why we eat too much before we can control what and how much we eat. From this we learn the reasons for the inevitable failures at diet and exercise.
This provocative new approach to understanding and fighting overeating offers practical advice and biological explanations for your cravings and moods, and it shows how both are indicators of energy and stress levels. Thayer describes how most people's daily energy cycles function, and he explains how you can apply this in scientifically proven ways to fight the urge to eat when you are down and to achieve the optimum goal of "calm energy."

Excellent Anger/Stress Management Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be extremely helpful and user-friendly for a range of target audiences, both academic and non-academic. It could be used not only in anger/stress management courses, but also as a self-help book for adults or even teens. Unlike a lot of other anger/stress management resources, this book creates a program that moves from basic principles to skills-building to application in a way that I found to be particularly effective. The authors use a holistic approach to anger/stress management, covering all aspects of health--physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual--which is especially important in addressing this issue. Great book, and very affordable too.

Editorial Review:

Excessive anger can destroy your relationships, career, and even health. Scant professional literature has been available on the topic until now. The Anger Management Sourcebook shows you how to empower yourself and redirect your anger into constructive behavior. This resource is a must-have tool for you or a loved one as well as professionals dealing with clients who suffer from excessive anger.

Has HAY HOUSE sold out 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I was a fan of HAY HOUSE and their authors until I began to see how the cross promote. Using many authors create lavish 5 star reviews when they might never have read the book. I have lost all trust in the opinion of the fluff reviews by HAY HOUSE authors and it has caused me to NOT purchase books by them and wait for the general public review the book.
I gave this book a 1 because I would like to see HAY HOUSE remove their paid and not paid author reviews removed so we will have a fair star system and honest reviews to read.HAY HOUSE and the AUTHORS have abused this system and have taken away your integrity. I hope you clean up your practice.

Editorial Review:

A guide to the practice of Inner Alchemy, which allows you to control the energies of your inner universe to better connect with energies of the outer universe

• Teaches the essential first-level meditations in Taoist practice, also known as Fusion of the Five Forces, for self-healing and emotional and spiritual development

• Shows step-by-step how to remove negative emotions from the organs in which they are lodged by neutralizing and transforming the negativity back into positive energy

• Includes basic and advanced-level meditations

Fusion of the Five Elements is the necessary first step in the Taoist practice of Inner Alchemy, in which one learns to control the generation and flow of emotional, mental, and physical energies within the body. It is a series of meditations designed to locate and dissolve negative energies trapped inside the body by making a connection between the five outer senses (experienced through the ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and tongue) and the five major negative emotions (anger, hate, worry, sadness, and fear). When the body is cleared of negative energy, universal chi energy flows freely and productively, nourishing both body and soul.

The practice is divided into two parts. The first works with controlling the forces of the five elements on the five major organs of the body by learning the elements’ effects upon each other and how to balance and utilize these energies properly. The advanced Fusion exercises then show how to channel the greater energies of the stars and planets to strengthen internal weaknesses and crystallize positive energy. By “fusing” all the different kinds of energy together, a harmonious whole is created--the key to manifesting an Immortal existence.

Editorial Review:

In his study of infants and children (including observations of his own baby's smiles and pouts), of the insane, of painting and sculpture, of cats and dogs and monkeys, and of the ways that people in different cultures express their feelings, Darwin's insights have not been surpassed by modern science. This definitive edition of Darwin's masterpiece contains a substantial new Introduction and Afterword by Paul Ekman. Ekman also provides commentaries that use the latest scientific knowledge to elaborate, support, and occasionally challenge Darwin's study. For this edition, Ekman has returned to Darwin's original notes in order to produce for the first time a corrected, authoritative text illustrated by drawings and photographs positioned exactly as its author intended. "This new edition of Darwin's extraordinary book is a major event in the human sciences."-Steven Pinker "This new comprehensive edition of Expression will introduce a new generation of readers to Darwin's masterpiece, undiminished and intensely relevant even 125 years after publication."-Oliver Sacks "Ekman's contribution to his edition of Darwin's 1872 monographcan count as a book in its own right."-Ian Hacking, Times Literary Supplement

Editorial Review:

The Phenomenal #1 International Bestseller--An Enthralling Exploration of the How and Why Behind the Science of Happiness
We all know what it feels like to be happy, but what mechanisms inside our brains trigger such a positive emotion? What does it really mean to be happy, and why can’t we feel that way all of the time? Psychologists and neuroscientists have been studying negative emotions for decades, but until recently few have focused on the subject of happiness.

Now, in The Science of Happiness, leading science journalist Stefan Klein ranges widely across the latest frontiers of neuroscience and psychology to explain how happiness is generated in our brains, what biological purpose it serves, and the conditions required to foster the "pursuit of happiness." A remarkable synthesis of a growing body of research that has not heretofore been brought together, The Science of Happiness is, ultimately, a book that helps us understand our own quest for happiness—and is certain to help make you happier.

A fascinating and fun look at why we like the things we do. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Wallenstein is a well-respected scientist who has the gift of writing like a novelist. It starts out with some simply posed questions: "How is it that the human mind experiences pleasure in mere shapes and colors, textures and touch, myths and stories?" "Why does humor relieve tension?" "Why does music invigorate us...while other noises leave no mark?" In the spirit of Pinker, Wallenstein, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist, answers these questions and others by assembling a highly original work that examines the evolutionary origins and purpose of pleasure.

The book is split into three sections. The first section examines the evolutionary origins of pleasure from a very broad perspective going well beyond the usual but limited emphasis on the role of pleasure in sexual reproduction to include lively discussions on the development of aesthetics, social attachment, and language. The second section uses the five senses as a platform for understanding why humans from all cultures seem to have a fondness for the same common experiences such as making music, devouring sweets, prefering symmetry to asymmetry, enjoying rhythmic body movements, touching and being touched, and many others. He then shows how the evolution of these innate preferences is actually important for regulating brain development and plasticity in children and adults. The final section comprises an eye-opening exploration into how these innate preferences shape the way we make everyday decisions such as choosing potential mates, deciding what to buy, and what we pursue for fun. This book will be a great selection for anyone wanting to learn about how pleasure impacts our biological and psychological development.

Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

An immensely fascinating look at the origins and evolutionary purpose of human pleasure
From our enjoyment of music to our cravings for chocolate, from our love for children and family to our attraction to things of beauty, this book embarks on an intriguing and accessible exploration of the purpose of pleasure in our lives and in human history. How did pleasure evolve and why? How does it develop in children? How does the pursuit of pleasure play a critical role in brain development? The Pleasure Instinct explores everything we need to know about our urge to feel good.

Editorial Review:

"By the time you finish this book, there will be nothing holding you back." —from the Introduction

Most people have a vision for their lives that they're not pursuing, half-heartedly pursuing, or pursuing with all their might yet somehow falling short. This vision can be modest or grand. It may involve breaking free of a destructive habit or finding a truly healthy relationship. It might have to do with making a real difference in the world or helping to lead a company to extraordinary success. In The One Thing Holding You Back, Raphael Cushnir, a leading voice in the world of personal and professional development, reveals that whenever people aren't living their dreams it's because they're not yet willing and able to feel specific emotions related to those dreams. Once we access and understand these emotions, our dreams can and will come true.

Cushnir asserts that mere emotional awareness, commonly referred to as emotional intelligence, is not enough. For maximum benefit we must directly and consistently connect with our emotions. In particular, we need to connect with the emotions we routinely avoid, resist, or attempt to dismiss. It's these emotions that possess the key to our greatest goals. And learning to connect with them is another rarely taught but essential skill.

The One Thing Holding You Back provides real solutions that can be implemented immediately and without external support and includes true stories of people who have put Cushnir's process to work and transformed their lives. Delivering a step-by-step program in accessible language, this landmark book will turn the obstacles in front of us into tremendous opportunities for achieving the life we always wanted.

Editorial Review:

Bringing together the latest insights from psychiatry, psychology, and philosophy, Daniel Nettle sheds light on happiness, the most basic of human desires. Nettle examines whether people are basically happy or unhappy, whether success can make us happy, what sort of remedies to unhappiness work, why some people are happier than others, and much more.
The book is packed with fascinating observations. We discover the evolutionary reason why negative thoughts are more powerful than positive ones. We read that happiness varies from country to country, for example, the Swiss are much more happy than Bulgarians. And we learn that, in a poll among people aged 42 years old--peak mid-life crisis time--more than half rated their happiness an 8, 9, or 10 out of 10, and 90% rated it above 5. Nettle, a psychologist, is particularly insightful in discussing the brain systems underlying emotions and moods, ranging from serotonin, to mood enhancing drugs such as D-fenfluramine, which reduces negative thinking in less than an hour; to the part of the brain that, when electrically stimulated, provides feelings of benevolent calm and even euphoria. In the end, Nettle suggests that we would all probably be happier by trading income or material goods for time with people or hobbies, though most people do not do so.
Happiness offers a remarkable portrait of the feeling that poets, politicians, and philosophers all agree truly makes the world go round.
