Book review 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read meanwhile several books of James Hollis. I have bought all of them, but I am not through with all yet.
I am sorry that I have never met a person with his view in my whole life.
I enjoy reading his books, because they are profound and because they are written in a style that gives you the impression as if Dr. Hollis is sitting in front of you and talking to you in person. It is as if there is a genuine and wise friend in front of you, who understands life with all its ramifications and who teaches you about it. I prefer reading his books over talking to people.

Strengthened with literature and poetry 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read several of this author's books. I found this book to be his most compelling book. Each chapter can be taken separately if you like and I like to wonder back through, re-reading different chapters to get a closer study. More than most psychology writers and even Jungian writers, Mr. Hollis adds beauty to his work with his extensive and well taken quotes from literature. I will never pass my copy on to a friend or to the used book dealer. Worth noting also is that this was one of his earlier books and I believe it introduces much of what he covers in later books.

No more raging maniac 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I am so thankful that I found this book. I had fallen into a terrible pattern of screaming uncontrollably at my kids and then later having to apologize. My kids were afraid of me and how I would react. This book made sense to me from page one. Every page has been an "Ah-ha" moment of how I have conditioned my heart and mind to respond with anger. It has been so worth the money. I am now using the teachniques and ideas from the book to recondition my heart and mind to respond more calmly. My kids and husband have noticed a difference. And I definitely have. I feel so much better physically and mentally (less outburts mean less guilt and shame for how my anger was affecting my kids). I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for real and doable ways to reduce your anger. Good luck!

Editorial Review:

Neuroscientists have discovered that getting the heart into a positive rhythm can send a signal to the brain, allowing the two to synchronize and transform anger, frustration, and irritation into compassion, empathy, and calm. Transforming Anger shows readers how thoughts and feelings get stored in the nervous system and create cellular triggers of anger. In order to get beyond the mechanical negative pull of their triggers, readers learn to control their heart rhythms through a "freeze-frame" technique that allows them to clearly see their options for dealing with anger. Readers learn how to turn their emotional deficits into assets; build personal strengths; depersonalize actions of others; and identify resistance to change.

Read It Over and Over 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I have not only highlighted the daylights out of this book, I'm starting on my fourth time reading it. It has helped me deeply realize that anger in me is like acid in a styrofoam cup - it destroys the container. Thubten Chodron has a gift for translating the Buddhist teachings and philosophies into plain language that anyone can understand and apply.

This is the kind of book that I keep 2 or 3 copies on hand to give to friends, relatives and co-workers. It's a wonderful way to help people in conflict without being preachy.

I hope I get to meet Thubten Chodron one day so I can thank her for blessing us with this book.

Childproofing your exposed buttons 5 out of 5 stars.

American Buddhist nun Chodron has in this work produced a detailed and concise handbook which could be used practically by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Of greed, hate and delusion representing the three roots of suffering, anger is the most easily seen with prominence in the sphere of relationships to other people. It is at this level that the book applies in our interactions with kin, associates and adversaries and how to change tensions into harmony. The presentation in part echoes "How to win friends and influence people" by D. Carnegie, though its tone is more esoteric and not one to help improve ones' charisma.

The narrative hits home its points e.g. in defending itself against the charge that anger could actually be beneficial by devices including a disarming logic and everyday examples both hypothetical and real. In the former, the personal third person pronoun (like in many modern books) switches easily though unpredictably between genders. It also draws on traditional texts and advice from meditation masters as well as Chodron's quietly forthright style.

About 18 chapters summarise all the facets of anger manifestation including how it applies to oneself. A strength of the book is how it fashions modern ways of thinking and concepts to make aspects of the teaching relevant e.g. "When Our Buttons Are Pushed" or "Conflict Styles". The book thus combines modern psychological approaches to understanding and dealing with stress with ancient wisdom. Topics include defining anger, patience, recognising anger, criticism and blame, dealing with enemies, envy, love and compassion and developing wisdom. The book contains two summarising appendices to clarify the lessons it teaches with a glossary and reading list.

This book will be particularly useful in penal institutes to help offenders and the probation service in "anger management courses" and wherever such lessons could apply from schools to Customer Service. Readers who think they do not need such a guide may in fact discover reservoirs of resentment within themselves after reading it. As an interesting digest it could be equally translated to help deal with alternative problems such as manifestations of greed. This is very much a book that points the way without detailed analysis of mind and liberation with some challenging wisdom. It points to the interconnectedness of all beings and the futility of anger, not least under conditions of "cyclic existence".

Editorial Review:

Working with Anger presents a variety of Buddhist methods for subduing and preventing anger, not by changing what is happening, but by framing it differently. No matter what our religion, learning to work with our anger is effective for everyone seeking personal happiness as well as world peace.

Editorial Review:

Can we be forgiven our insensitivity and betrayals? Should we always forgive those who have hurt us? What enables us to reopen our hearts when we do? Interweaving themes from literature, movies, current events, and from his practice as a clinical psychologist, Robert Karen addresses the difficult questions at the heart of many human dramas, highlighting the struggle
between our wish to repair our relationships on the one side and our tendency to see ourselves as victims who need revenge on the other.

Dr. Karen writes that our capacity to forgive reveals much about our character–including our ability to recognize the humanity in someone who has hurt us and to see our own limitations and complicity in whatever went wrong. He argues that the forgiving spirit not only liberates us from feeling victimized by others but frees us from compulsive self-hatred and regret as well: for forgiving others is nothing but the mirror image of forgiving oneself.

Throughout Karen insists that we are not saints, that forgiveness is a struggle for everyone, and that we cannot be truly forgiving if we do not allow ourselves our negative emotions, especially anger. If our harshest feelings are suppressed, we can never move beyond them.

Forgiveness sheds light on the envy, narcissism, and paranoia that threaten relationships; the childhood experiences that magnify those qualities; and, finally, the processes of mourning, healthy protest, and what he calls "the redeployment of love" that can help us to let go and move beyond them.

Editorial Review:

Is illness really just the result of external factors such as viruses, bacteria, or environmental contaminates invading the body? Or, is there something more to why we become ill? Could it be that the ancient metaphysicians were on to something when they viewed healing from the adage As a person thinketh, so shall they be? Do the mind and body truly imitate and imprint each other so what affects one affects the other? And if so, is it possible that if we acknowledge and understand the impact of these elements, we could not only restore our body back to good health, but we could actually make it better than before we became ill?
Healing Happens with Your Help provides the answers to these questions and more and uncovers the hidden meanings behind illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression, and headaches. It looks at illness not from symptoms, but from origins; and not from the perspective of curing, but from the perspective of healing. It explores the complex relationship between emotions, attitudes, and beliefs and provides a mapping process to show you where you energetically hold these triggers in the organs, glands, muscles, and spine of your body. Most important, Healing Happens with Your Help offers insight into how you can heal your body and your life by simply changing patterns and changing thoughts.

Practical, thought-provoking, inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
53 of 53 people found this review helpful.

This book has been essential for me in developing a concept of the healing force in myself and in everybody -- Life Energy, as the title succinctly puts it -- and how this force can be activated. The specific details about our emotions -- and how they relate to the acupuncture system -- are fascinating. I particularly find helpful and thought-provoking Dr. Diamond's use of etymology (the origins of words) in pinpointing and evoking emotional states. The many photographs and humorous or touching anecdotes -- all these contribute to this highly readable, very therapeutic volume. I find Dr. Diamond's affirmations and the acupuncture points, which are clearly illustrated, wonderfully helpful in creating a daily routine for health and happiness. I have gone on to read many other books by Dr. Diamond, but this one remains basic and essential. I highly reccomend this book.

Editorial Review:

This ground breaking material focuses on the psychological aspects of Life Energy. Learn how to assess the level of your Life Energy and determine the specific psychological factors which are interfering with its activation and expression. Here for the first time is a comprehensive explanation of our positive and negative emotions and how they specifically affect us mentally and physically. A complete study of the meridians and the emotions.

Editorial Review:

What causes jealousy? Who is more prone to jealousy--women or men? Why does jealousy sometimes lead to violence? How can you tell if you are a jealous person?

Dr. Pines draws on case studies from her clinical practice, jealousy workshops, and fascinating research with more than 100 individuals and couples--including interviews with people who have committed crimes of passion. Exploring the many facets of this complex emotion, Dr. Pines discusses five psychological approaches to jealousy--covering such issues as whether jealousy is the result of unresolved childhood trauma, the dynamics within a specific relationship, or the consequence of our evolutionary nature.

Romantic Jealousy offers real-life stories, simple quizzes, and an in-depth jealousy questionnaire aimed at helping readers assess their predisposition to jealousy and providing strategies to control their jealous urges. The advice offered can be applied to gay and straight couples, to those who suffer from a jealousy problem or know of a loved one who does, and for psychologists and counselors to use with their clients as a tool in therapy.

Romantic Jealousy provides us with a compelling account of the psychology of jealousy. Dr. Pines journeys into the deep recesses of the human mind and heart, exposing the dynamics of jealousy--its causes, symptoms, and danger signs--and the most effective strategies available for keeping jealousy under control.
