I am the owner of a company that specializes in personal safety & defensive tactics for healthcare staff & healthcare safety & security officers.Several days ago came into possession of an outstanding new book. Essentials of Aggression Management in Health Care.I sat down and did the customary "quick read", thinking that it would be just aother of several re-hashings of "handling those people who are out of control in the healthcare setting'. After going over it, I went back and took some real time and read it in depth and highlighted all the life saving / important informaton in the book. (3/4 of my book has several colors of highlighting on it)After being in the training business for many years and traveling the U.S. to many hospitals I find this book i the cutting edge and should be made mandatory for ALL healthcare workers. You must remember that most healthcare providers look at the subjects that they meet CLINICALLY an not CRIMINALLY, they never believe or think that they can be the target of an attack ... until it's too late. ALL healthcare providers from the ones on the street to the late nght staff in a small hospital should, NO, MUST read this book.If you work in healthcare you know some of the risk you face, if your organization seems blind to your risk on the street or in the hospital, THIS is the book to help you and them understand the threat and the answers. This book covers ALL the bases, from verbalization to simple hands on safety. If you have ANY questions on this book and what it offers to the healthcare provider cantact me at DALE4175@WEBTV.NETDon't read this book just once, read it and live it.

Editorial Review:

Text applies the author's techniques to all areas of health care: prehospital, acute, and long-term care. A must have if you are in Law Enforcement. Only by understanding the LE environment better can we hope to improve. Remember, No One has to understand Violence like a Police Officer. No one else, with a few exceptions, confronts it in it's raw uncontrolled form. Any understanding and anything you can do to raise your understanding just may save your life.

Editorial Review:

At a time when the relations between morality, the social fabric and the inner world are causing distress throughout the world, Rob Weatherill provides a searching study of the growing impoverishment of life in Western society. He plumbs the depths of the ways our culture impoverishes and does violence to our private selves and spaces. He addresses himself to the role of ideals in psychoanalysis and brings a Kleinian perspective to bear on the schizoid nature of modern culture; the emptiness of the addict; the crisis in education; feminism and the shattering of male narcissism.

In a time when we continue searching for teen violence's causes, this book provides important insights into this issue. Dr. Hazler includes descriptions of both bullies and victims, and offers crucial guidelines for teachers and parents to assist adolescents through difficult situations. This book is a must read for educators, counselors and parents.

Editorial Review:

Student to student bullying is becoming an increasingly prevalent problem and one that affects most children and young adults in some way. Providing a studied look at the issues and people involved, this book gives current and practical intervention and prevention techniques available. The book begins with a clear picture of who the school bullies and victims really are and how their problems begin, a well as the potential dangers they face throughout their lives. A step-by-step model for helping the victims improve their relationship is then presented. Finally hands on actions are offered for school personnel, parents, bullies, victims, and bystanders that can help to break the cycle at its earliest stages and improve the environment for everyone.

Editorial Review:

Is there a particular type of person who becomes a bully? Why do bullies behave like they do? How can we interpret and understand bullying within relationships?
The Bullies attempts to get inside the minds of the bully and the victim - the child, the adolescent and the adult - across a wide range of 'closed' situations including the home, school, workplace, prisons and the armed services. By listening to the voices of bullies and victims from all kinds of backgrounds without making judgments, counselor Dennis Lines provides unique insights into bullying and what makes such domineering and aggressive behavior so complex. He discusses controversial issues such as genetic predisposition towards abusive behavior and draws on his counseling knowledge to provide insights on how to understand and treat bullies to change their behavior.
The Bullies offers a unique and illustrated perspective on a widespread phenomenon, and will be essential reading for psychologists, sociologists, counselors, teachers, social workers, probation officers, students and researchers.

Editorial Review:

This interdisciplinary review of the cellular and molecular basis of aggression shows how the nerve cell circuitry and the neurochemistry that mediates aggressive behaviors are modified by various environmental and genetic factors. The authors focus on the links to cognition and the neurotransmitter pathways that either promote or suppress violent behavior. They also examine how family environment, early life experiences, exposure to violent video games and movies, religion, and substance abuse effect violent behaviors, including participation in gangs and terrorist organizations. Various behavioral and pharmacological approaches are presented for preventing and treating personal aggression.

Dr. Grisso calls out the answers, but are we listening! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Understanding Aggressive Behavior in Children addresses this complex theme in a forthright and understandable manner. Certainly written with the professional clinician as the primary intended audience, yet clearly digestible for the seasoned psychiatric consumer recipient(and concerned family members, etc.) Where does the madness come from? What are its consequences? And, what might the future hold? The author answers these questions, and fills in the assorted "gaps," accordingly. This book is a "must read" for those individuals with hopes of enhancing their understanding of the dynamics at hand!

Editorial Review:

In this work, figures in the field of childhood aggression share what is known about the cultural, biological and psychological roots of violence and develop intervention strategies to deal with the needs of young people. Coverage includes clinical assessment and treatment of children with inappropriate aggressive behaviour; socioenvironmental factors that contribute to inappropriate aggressive behaviour; behavioural and neurobiological consequences of environmental and emotional insults; neurochemical control of aggression and the moral and ethical implications of psychopharmacology in children; and psychosocial intervention strategies for helping children who are excessively aggressive.

Editorial Review:

This boldly original book explores the origins, meanings, and forms of women's aggression. Drawing from in-depth interviews with sixty women of different ages and ethnic and class backgrounds-police officers, attorneys, substance abusers, homemakers, artists-Dana Jack provides a rich account of how women explain (or explain away) their own hidden or actual acts of hurt to others. With sensitivity but without sentimentality, Jack gives readers a range of compelling stories of how women channel, either positively or destructively, their own powerful force and of how they resist and retaliate in the face of others' aggression in a society that expects women to be yielding, empathetic, and supportive. Arguing that aggression arises from failures in relationships, Jack portrays the many forms that women's aggression can take, from veiled approaches used to resist, control, and take vengeance on others, to aggression that reflects despair, to aggression that may be a hopeful sign of new strength. Throughout the book, Jack shows the positive sides of aggression as women struggle with internal and external demons, reconnect with others, and create the courage to stand their ground. This work broadens our understanding of aggression as an interpersonal phenomenon rooted in societal expectations, and offers exciting new approaches for exploring the variations of this vexing human experience.
