Editorial Review:

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Children experience Christmas through magic, anticipation, and learning about the baby Jesus. As we mature, we experience Christmas through the gifts we give, the love we share, and the magic we create for others. A Chicken Soup for the Soul Christmas brings back the memories of childhood through the eyes of children on Christmas day and inspires good deeds by reminding us how the smallest gesture can truly change a life.

Go back in time through genuine stories of hope and kindness and see how people find the true meaning of the season through unexpected miracles and those they meet along the way. Peek into the life of one family as they visit a relative at a nursing home on Christmas and how a cup of ice cream and a few moments of time brighten up the day for those who live there. Read about one woman's journey through surviving the loss of her husband and how the love and warmth of her family at Christmas strengthens her. Enjoy a sweet tale of how an old doll dressed in new clothes becomes the most precious gift and cherished memory a child ever receives. And, of course, it wouldn't be Christmas without a few stories celebrating the wonderment and joy children experience throughout this very special season.

A great guide for changing your life! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

You won't be disappointed by John C. Maxwell's helpful guide to time management. Maxwell's strategies will work for even the most time crunched people. Maxwell's program teaches people how to prioritize 12 things that truly matter and how to follow through daily in these areas. It is easy to feel as though you lack the free time to affect any change in your life, but Maxwell shows how devoting small amounts of time in the proper way can make all the difference. The audiobook version seems especially helpful for the book's audience - people with little free time. You can listen while stuck in traffic or cleaning the house, and figure out how to reorganize your life at the same time. Narrator Lew Grenville is an experienced performer and you might recognize his voice from National Geographic or the Discovery Channel. His voice is authoritative, clear, and pleasant to listen to, and meshes well with the subject matter. At a playing time of 3.5 hours, busy people should find this audiobook well worth their (multi-tasking) time.

Editorial Review:

Drawing from the text of the Business Week bestseller Today Matters, this condensed, revised edition boils down John C. Maxwell's 12 daily practices to their very essence, giving maximum impact in minimal time. Presented in a quick-read format, this version is designed to be read cover to cover in one sitting or taken in as brief lessons in a few spare minutes each day. It covers such topics as:
-- Priorities
-- Health
-- Family
-- Finances
-- Values
-- Growth
Readers will learn how to make decisions on important matters and apply those decisions daily to put them on a path to more successful, productive, and fulfilling lives.

A very important book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am extremely grateful to the author, Alfie Kohn, for writing this book. It has changed me forever. That sounds dramatic, but it is the truth. For me, it was paradigm shattering. I view myself, my children, and all people differently now. I can see more clearly what motivates me and all people. I feel more peace with myself, and that who I am and what I do is enough. I need not fear the judgments of others. I also have more compassion for my family and the whole human race. What a marvelously written book that is essential for all people to read. You will never be the same after pondering it's pages.

Editorial Review:

The basic strategy we use for raising children, teaching students, and managing workers can be summarized in six words: Do this and you'll get that. We dangle goodies (from candy bars to sales commissions) in front of people in much the same way we train the family pet. Drawing on a wealth of psychological research, Alfie Kohn points the way to a more successful strategy based on working with people instead of doing things to them. "Do rewards motivate people?" asks Kohn. "Yes. They motivate people to get rewards." Seasoned with humor and familiar examples, Punished By Rewards presents an argument unsettling to hear but impossible to dismiss.

Highly recommended, appreciate her approach 4 out of 5 stars.

I thought this was a very good book, with quick, easy, practical lessons. I found it motivating and insightful. Not every lesson resonated with me and I found some of the examples to be irritating and irrelevant, but I'm only one part of her audience and I'm sure those lessons and examples spoke to someone else. As far as the lessons go, you can do as much or as little as you want with them. Some days, I wrote a lot. Some days I wrote just a few sentences. If I missed a day, I just picked it up the next day. If you can't commit to that, I'm not sure if you're ready to commit to long-term weight loss or maintenance. The most important lessons, I think, are around managing long term weight loss. It really is a rest of your life challenge!

Editorial Review:

They tell you what to eat. 100 Days of Weight Loss gives you the personal tools to make the right choices.

Editorial Review:

There’s a voice in the universe calling each of us to remember our purpose—our reason for being here now, in this world of impermanence. The voice whispers, shouts, and sings to us that this experience of being in form, in space and time, knowing life and death, has meaning. The voice is that of inspiration, which is within each and every one of us.
In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains how we’ve chosen to enter this world of particles and form. From our place of origin, in ways that we don’t readily comprehend now, we knew what we were coming here to accomplish, and we participated in setting this life process in motion. So why not think this same way? Why put the responsibility or blame on any one or any thing that’s not a part of us? On Earth we have the capacity of volition—we can choose—so let’s assume that we had the same capacity when we resided in the spiritual realm. We chose our physical body, and we chose the parents we needed for the trip. It doesn’t seem too great a stretch to move into the idea that we chose this life in concert with our Source.
Each chapter in this book is filled with specifics for living an inspired life. From a very personal viewpoint, Wayne Dyer offers a blueprint through the world of spirit to inspiration, your ultimate calling.

Nearly one million people have been touched by the stories in the first edition of Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul. Now this second edition ministers to millionsmore!

Postive Approach to a Negative 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was a bit struck by the title which is allegedly a positive book but speaking about complaining and negativity seemed a little strange.

This book is told in storybook fashion and generally speaking, I prefer books to get to the point than using storybook style; however, I do know there are a number of people who do like storybooks.

I totally agree with the thesis of the book which is you will have more fun and you will do better, the company will do better if you don't complain and look at things positively.

The book has numerous good ideas on how to reduce complaining and the one thing that I liked was a no complaining week personal action plan which includes:

Day one - monitor your thoughts and words
Day two - make a gratitude list
Day three - take a thank you walk
Day four - focus on good staff
Day five - start a success journal
Day six - let go
Day seven - breathe

Although the book is fairly shallow, I would still recommend it and think it has some good ideas.

Editorial Review:

Negativity in the workplace costs businesses billions of dollars and impacts the morale, productivity and health of individuals and teams. In The No Complaining Rule: Positive Ways to Deal with Negativity at Work, acclaimed motivational speaker Jon Gordon shares an enlightening story that demonstrates how you can conquer negativity and inspire others to adopt a positive attitude. Based on one company’s successful No Complaining Rule, the powerful principles and actionable plan are practical and easy-to-follow, making this book an ideal read for managers, team leaders and anyone interested in generating positive energy.

Editorial Review:

This Is Not the Life I Ordered is for anyone who has ever felt overworked, overwhelmed, or just plain unlucky (and, who hasn't?!). Through this collection of stories, wisdom, and practical advice, readers will meet four ordinary women who have faced extraordinary life challenges. Together, they have a history of six marriages, ten children, four stepchildren, six dogs, two miscarriages, two cats, a failed adoption, and foster parenthood. Two have lived through the death of their spouses and one was shot and left for dead on a tarmac in Guyana -- which is documented in "Jonestown" airing on PBS' American Experience

This book started simply with four friends getting together for "kitchen-table coaching sessions" to talk about their lives. Week by week and story by story, they realized their great advice to each other could help other women struggling with life's myriad issues of work, family, and love, as well as the big questions of life and death. For over a decade, the power and strength of their collective friendship enabled these women not only to survive but to thrive. They invite readers to join them to learn how they, too, can turn "misfortunate" events into joy-filled opportunities. Readers will want to share this book with every woman in their lives!

* Authors are best-selling business-book author, Deborah Collins Stephens; Emmy winner Jan Yanehiro; State Senator Jackie Speier; and entrepreneur Michealene Cristini Risley whose Flashcards was screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival.

* Authors' support circle includes Debbi Fields, Kristi Yamaguchi, Danielle Steele, Gerry Laybourne, and other power women.

* Features practical "Wit (Women in Transition) Kit" tips at the end of each chapter to help readers to be their own life coaches.
