Great Book to Indentify & Deal With Anger 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book to help children identify the physical signs of anger and to sort out the emotion they are feeling. It also teaches strategies to "tame your temper". I made a "cheat sheet" for my son to use when he gets angry with anger strategies. My 7 year son with autism uses strategies suggested in this book.

Editorial Review:

Anger is a part of life. We can't avoid it, we shouldn't stuff it, and we can't make it go away. Kids need help learning how to manage their anger. This book speaks directly to kids and offers strategies they can start using immediately. Blending tips and ideas with jokes and funny cartoons, it guides kids to understand that anger is normal and can be expressed in many ways—some healthy, some not. It teaches them how to recognize anger in themselves and others, how to deal with situations and emotions (loneliness, guilt, frustration, fear) that lead to or mask anger, and how to deal with the anger they feel. Young readers learn that violence is not acceptable and there are better, safer ways to resolve conflicts. They also discover what to do when people around them are angry, how to get help, and how to locate other resources (books, hotlines, school groups) when they need more support.

Should be in the religious section, not pyschology 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The cover and description of the book do not express that Les Carter and Frank Minirth are really only interested in appealing to Christians or people who want to convert to Christianity. I look to books like this for scientific reasoning, but was greatly put off when it started quoting Jesus on page 11 (after prompting the reader to complete workbook questions on previous pages therefore making the book unreturnable.) Anyway, I think it's a shame the authors do not put "For Christians Only" on the cover so at least their book would only end up in the hands they intended.

Book is a joke 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is supposed to help with anger management? I am open to listening to mythical stories about dudes who lived a couple of thousand years ago as much as the next guy, but in an anger management book? Sin is causing all my anger? Wow didn't know that. I do have a better idea of something that makes me angry now, religious mythology passing itself off as a self-help book. Get this book over in the religious section with the rest of the fairy tales.

I wouldn't have been so upset about this if the book had something marked on it saying that it was religious in nature. I don't normally don't read such garbage and leave that to others who do believe in such things, but to slip it in and waste my time!!! Is this how you indoctrinate people in your beliefs?

Oh well, there's plenty of other anger management books out there. I will be more careful next time I select something like this and get something actually useful.

This book owes me some stars for being such a tremendous waste of time.

I'm sure christians will get upset at hearing this, but I'm sure you'll turn the other cheek.

If you need me I'll be over here with my "Sin"

Editorial Review:

This is the only anger management system we've found that offers interactive exercises to help readers understand and modify their own behavior. Whether your anger is from tension at work, frustration at home, or just life in general - this workbook will help you identify and modify the anger that keeps you from inner peace and contentment. The Timeless Book That Gets You Through. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is the Timeless Book that gets you through Grief. "The Grief Recovery Hand Book, The Action Program For Moving Beyond Death Divorce and Other Losses" needs to be in every home. This book takes you beyond all losses. However you must be willing to do the grief work to get there. The main cornerstone of this book is the loss history graph.
The loss history graph can help you to sort out the past from the present and clear the way for a better future. This book actually takes you to a new place no matter what the loss. I give five stars because I own three copies. One copy is the first edition which is all covered with hand written notes. Two copies of the second edition one to study and a loaner copy.

Editorial Review:

Incomplete recovery from grief can have a lifelong negative effect on your capacity for happiness. Drawing from their own histories, as well as from others, the authors illustrate what grief is and how it is possible to recover and regain energy and spontaneity. Based on a proven program, now extensively revised, The Grief Recovery Handbook offers grievers the specific actions needed to complete the grieving process and accept loss. For those ready to regain a sense of aliveness, the principles outlined here make this a life-changing handbook.

The Human Experience 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A Natural History of the Senses is a wild romp through smell, taste, hearing, touch and sight. It is also a guided tour of how humans experience the world. At times the writing has a rare beauty to the point of being poetic while at other times it is exotic, intimate and revealing.

Each chapter reveals the intricacies of the topic at hand except the last two chapters seem slightly off focus. At times Diane Ackerman deviates wildly from her chosen topic and then gets back on track. For example, while discussing vision she ends up talking about weather patterns.

Through this book you may discover how kissing originated or why tea is harmful without milk. Why do woman crave pickles during pregnancy? What motivates people to watch horror movies?

Diane Ackerman is well traveled and has a inquisitive mind. I enjoyed reading new information about chocolate, vanilla and truffles. If you like to keep yourself fortified with useful information then this book is destined to please.

~The Rebecca Review

Editorial Review:

"One of the real tests of writers," notes Ackerman in this liveliest of nature books, "is how well they write about smells. If they can't describe the scent of sanctity in a church, can you trust them to describe the suburbs of the heart?" Ackerman passes the test, writing with ease and fluency about the five senses. Did you know that bat guano smells like stale Wheat Thins? That Bach's music can quell anger around the world? That the leaves that shimmer so beautifully in fall have "no adaptive purpose"? Ackerman does, and she guides us through questions of sensation with an eye for the amusingly arcane reference and just the right phrase.

Just FIVE simple steps..... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

......that's all it takes to learn how to come up with new & creative ideas, time after time. As Young says, the idea & the technique itself are so plain & logically simple that you may even miss it; despite the fact that the book is only some 48 pages long. It's easy to read & in your haste to learn "the secret" you may finish the book too quickly. Some thoughtful reading is required, so please don't dismiss the book because of its apparent brevity.

The fact that the book has survived successfully for over 40 years in print is testament to Young unique (but not new) teaching.

Although Young does not refer to it, I am reminded of many writers & books that go into great detail explaining the "science of the mind" & the wonderful way the brain [or mind] works & how it can be used to spawn new ideas & create solutions to problems. Sometimes referred to Mental Science, its philosophy & teachings go back thousands of years & weren't fully recognised until around the time of the 1900's.

If after reading this you wish to develop & research this technique further, I would highly recommend Emmet Fox's "Power Through Constructive Thinking".

Editorial Review:

A McGraw-Hill Advertising Classic

A Technique for Producing Ideas reveals a simple, sensible idea-generation methodology that has stood the test of time.

First presented to students in 1939, published in 1965, and now reissued for a new generation of advertising professionals and others looking to jump-start their creative juices, this powerful guide details a five-step process for gathering information, stimulating imagination, and recombining old elements into dramatic new ideas.

Complete perfection in self-help book writing that actually WORKS 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I love using self-help books as therapy: they are reasonably cheap and they mobilize you sometimes even better than a therapist - as you know you can't become passive or rely on someone else for your progress.

Over the years, I've seen quite a few good self-help books, and God knows, I've been duped by a few unhelpful ones in glossy covers. It always puzzles me to see how some of these real duds can manage to make it to the best seller's lists and stay there. I know it's human to seek simplistic answers, only to find out, that the solution to a long-term problem is never as easy and quick as the book promises.

A while back, I was lucky to get a hold of a book called The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Books. The book is a result of a well-respected study that rates hundreds of self-help books/films/websites for various disorders such as depression, anger, obesity, anxiety, low self-esteem and so on. In the anger category, the only book found to be highly effective (5 stars) was the book I am reviewing.

This is the most concise book I've seen on this complex subject about 150 pages), but it's the essence of all I needed.

In my opinion, a self help book is good if:

1. It's simple, clear and free of psychobabble with a minimum of stories of non-existant humans;

2. It doesn't dwell exessively on the past no matter how sad, but rather enourages action to change;

3. The issues feel relevant and you see the application to your unique situation immediately;

4. It is scientifically proven to work. It does not promise you easy and quick results but realistic and common-sense;

The Anger Control Workbook is such self-help book.

It starts by teaching you how to relax on demand. Try to be angry when you are completely relaxed-it's impossible.

Relaxation is a skill that you perfect with 20-minute daily practice. You use this skill to temporarily calm yourself and buy time so that you can plead and reason with yourself not to act impulsively and cause an unrepairable damage.

Then, the book addresses your thought and belief system and helps to correct some of the distortions that are surely lurking there. Automatic and unnoticed distortions provide fertile ground for anger. They help sustain and justify its philosophical existance by painting all sort of seemingly inevitable catastrophes. Authors say, testing and correcting your silent dialog is the most important step in gaining control in any mood change, a.k.a. cognitive therapy.

Finally, the book teaches you how to inoculate yourself against various situations that make you angry by preventing any outbursts in the future. You compile the description of the situations that tick you off and deal with them on your own terms-at home while you are totally relaxed and safe by imagining yourself in the hot situation, and desensitizing yourself, until you get in control.

Often times, I actually found myself memorizing some of the books sentences, and reciting them to myself like mantra. For example, when getting pissed at people whom I deem as incompetent, I'd quell my anger by saying to myself "PEOPLE ARE DOING THEIR BEST". This sentence, as simple as corny as it might sound, would honestly humble myself and make me more human, calming a rising storm inside. It just had that click with me.

In the end, the obvious is worth repeating: this book or any self-help book works only if you use it! Deliberately seeking out situations that make you angry - not avoiding them - and acting in a new, non-agressive fashion, is key. Good luck!

Editorial Review:

The ever-escalating costs of anger are well documented: sabotaging careers, alienating friends and family, triggering illness, causing bodily harm. Written by two well-regarded experts in the field, The Anger Control Workbook introduces a new and radically simplified approach to anger control. Step-by-step exercises will aid readers in identifying, understanding, responding to, and ultimately coping with their hostile feelings. "Half the anger battle can be won by simply learning to relax the physical tension that develops in provocative situations. It's a proven fact that if you can relax your body, and keep it relaxed, it's almost impossible to get angry. Combating stress using the skills you're about to learn can help you calm down, think clearly, and handle any situation in an effective, positive way." - from the book

The first 78 pages are useless. 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The first section of the book, an entire 78 pages are worthless. The author keeps repeating himself with one message: "You have an anger problem, you have an anger problem." Thanks Dr. Harbin, I wouldn't have picked up a book called "Beyond Anger" if I were not aware of this already! I have to wonder, is the author trying to annoy the reader into becoming an angry person? The second section finally gets to the point and tells the reader what to do about their anger issues. However, he brings up various helpful points of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, yet he glosses over them, and does not give them the time they are due. Realizing your own "self talk" is very important, but the reader needs more than to be told, "Listen to what you say to yourself." Yeah, ok... so now what? The author also assumes many things about "Angry Men" which are untrue. This was really annoying to read so many generalizations. For example, the author says, "Angry men refuse to ask for help." Um, no they don't! I am a college student and I am constantly in my instructor's office hours asking for clarification and help. Please don't assume that one reader is identical to everyone else. The writing style of the author is not as good as Dr. Less Carter, and the book needs some attitude adjustment: The "voice" of the book is accusatory and unpleasant. Also, the book fails to talk about people who suffer from general "frustration" or who might have a low-level anger problem. Dr. Harbin lumps everyone into one category, that of wife-beating, out-of-control ex-convicts on the verge of self-destruction. It is really great to know that Dr. Harbin has experience with those kinds of people, but if you are a mostly-normal person who wants to understand why you have feelings of frustration and anger, this book is not for you. The folks at Publishers West Group need to work on heavily editing this book. They could throw out a good 1/3 of the text, and replace it with a new 1/3 entirely: Focus more about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques, and actually tell the reader how to help themselves. After all, isn't this a self-help book?

Editorial Review:

Men tend to express their anger differently than women do. Research shows men are often more violent and less willing to confront and deal with their emotions than women. Written by a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of male rage, Beyond Anger shows the angry - and miserable - man how to change his life and relationships for the better. This book helps men understand their anger by explaining what the specific symptoms of chronic anger are and by showing angry men how their actions negatively affect family, friends, and coworkers. It helps men control violent feelings by using simple exercises - developed especially for men - to identify when and why anger occurs and by helping them form new habits to prevent anger before it starts. Women, too, will learn essential strategies for understanding and helping the angry men in their lives. Beyond Anger is honest, tough, and real.

If you live in fear order this today! 5 out of 5 stars.
49 of 49 people found this review helpful.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have tried a lot of self-help techniques but the ones contained in this book are unlike any I've encountered.

The biggest lesson I got out of this book is that so many of our problems nowadays occur because we had painful experiences earlier in life but instead of facing them and accepting the ramifications - we chose to lie to ourselves instead. Richo explains the most common lies: life is just, suffering is avoidable, things don't change, etc.

I understand from this book that it is much better to just experience those original painful feelings instead of spending your life overanalyzing every minute of every day trying to make the world something it is not.

The key to life. 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 39 people found this review helpful.

This book simply explains the key to happiness. It is to let go of our fears, which is at the root of unhappiness, hate, aggression, apathy, and everything negative in the world. Once we are able to do that, we can open our hearts and embrace each other with love, respect, empathy, hope and forgiveness. It is a simple idea but something very difficult to do because our fears run very very deep within us all. Once we are able to do this to some extent, we try to help others do the same. It is simply the mission of all of our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. When you think about it, nothing else really matters as much. This is what this book tries to help us understand. It is a wonderful message! In another excellent book called "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato, the author explains how this works in relation to human development and evolution. It shows us how we consciously begin living this life when we are naturally ready for it. These books are absolutely exquisite!

Editorial Review:

Examines the deepest roots of fear and how it limits our ability to act and fulfill our greatest potential.

Understanding our Emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have been reading my doctors copy of SOS Help for Emotions. My wife is bi-polar and my son has Schizophrenia. This book has helped me to understand the self talk that we do to ourselves over a problem we face. Problems present themselves all the time, it is the self talk that we do that causes most of the problems with the solution. This book has helped me with both my wife and son's sickness because I can help them analize and improve thier self talk section of a problem to end with a more positive out look or one that is not as detrimental as they make it. What we think most of the times causes a problem to get worse than it should be, when we understand the problem and think it through in a positive way the out come of the problem is way less then what it could have been. I am not a doctor or psycologist, I'm just a family member that cares deeply for my family and want to make thier life less stressfull as I can.

Editorial Review:

SOS Help For Emotions: Managing Anxiety, Anger, And Depression is a self-help book and program that is easy to read and to follow. By understanding and applying this program, people learn useful self-help methods from cognitive behavior therapy. Individuals gain insight into changing thoughts and feelings and for becoming more successful in attaining goals.

SOS is based on the reality that we are responsible for managing our feelings and actions. Exercises, quizzes, 100 engaging illustrations, and available in four languages.

Pause and think 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

The Deeper Journey may not be a fast read, at least for me it wasn't because I paused to reflect on some pretty significant concepts. The author provides ample support to help you understand that we are to become transparent and vulnerable in our relationships and learn how to trust the genuine article. While the book takes you into deep self reflection on motives and openess, it also is not overwhelming or heavy handed. I think that Dr. Muholland has struck an even tone and will help a person to walk the talk and grow in their personal faith.

Editorial Review:

A Formatio book. As you journey deeper in the Christian pilgrimage, you come to realize that the Christian life is more than merely replicating particular spiritual disciplines or practices. You begin to understand that at the core of Christian faith is the transformation of your very identity. M. Robert Mulholland Jr. exposes the false selves that you may be tempted to hide behind and helps you to instead discover the true self that comes from being hidden with Christ in God. If the goal of the Christian journey is Christlikeness, then you must reckon with the unhealthy ways that you root your sense of being in things other than God. Along the way, you will discover a growing sense of intimacy and abandonment to God. Not only will you encounter the joy of discovering your own self, you will also find a greater love for others and compassion for the world.
