Great reference material 4 out of 5 stars.
34 of 38 people found this review helpful.

The book is highly recommendable for those interested in hedonic psychology especially Subjective Well-Being (a.k.a. Happiness). It covers a wide range of chapters which include definitions, measurement, clarifications/reactions, recent findings and researches. Its probable drawback is that, to a certain degree, it is somewhat very technical in approach. Not too many readers might easily grasp some contents/materials presented. Nonetheless, it is a great reference material.

Allow love to enter into your daily lived experiences 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book of daily affirmations is valuable in the sense that it calls attention to pathways of allowing love to enter into one's life. Although people tend to define love in romantic terms, this book is also about the type of love that one would share with friends, coworkers, and even the woman behind the counter at the grocery store. It is about human love.

I was fortunate enough to get this book about six months ago and it has proven to be an asset. It only takes a short time to read the daily passage and reflect upon it, but the benefits continue to reveal themselves. I have even earmarked my favorite passages and frequently return to them even though that peculiar day on the calendar has passed. In today's world of nonstop activity and individualism, it is beneficial to take time out and think about those things that matter the most - the sharing of love with other humans.

Editorial Review:

America's leading expert on love and relationships offers readers an opportunity to reflect each day on the love in their lives. In her characteristically poetic style, Daphne Rose Kingma writes with clarity and insight about the meaning and magic of love and how it helps people grow emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.

Editorial Review:

Winner in the 2002 AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal competition for excellence in design in the category of Jackets.

The first sensory input in life comes from the sense of touch while a baby is still in the womb, and touch continues to be the primary means of learning about the world throughout infancy, well into childhood. Touch is critical for children's growth, development, and health, as well as for adults' physical and mental well-being. Yet American society, claims Tiffany Field, is dangerously touch-deprived.

Field, a leading authority on touch and touch therapy, begins this accessible book with an overview of the sociology and anthropology of touching and the basic psychophysical properties of touch. She then reports recent research results on the value of touch therapies, such as massage therapy, for various conditions, including asthma, cancer, autism, and eating disorders. She emphasizes the need for a change in societal attitudes toward touching, particularly among those who work with children.

Editorial Review:

Why do we eat sardines, but never goldfish; ducks, but never parrots? Why does adding cheese make a hamburger a "cheeseburger" whereas adding ketchup does not make it a "ketchupburger"? By the same token, how do we determine which things said at a meeting should be included in the minutes and which ought to be considered "off the record" and officially disregarded?

In this wide-ranging and provocative book, Eviatar Zerubavel argues that cognitive science cannot answer these questions, since it addresses cognition on only two levels: the individual and the universal. To fill the gap between the Romantic vision of the solitary thinker whose thoughts are the product of unique experience, and the cognitive-psychological view, which revolves around the search for the universal foundations of human cognition, Zerubavel charts an expansive social realm of mind--a domain that focuses on the conventional, normative aspects of the way we think.

With witty anecdote and revealing analogy, Zerubavel illuminates the social foundation of mental actions such as perceiving, attending, classifying, remembering, assigning meaning, and reckoning the time. What takes place inside our heads, he reminds us, is deeply affected by our social environments, which are typically groups that are larger than the individual yet considerably smaller than the human race. Thus, we develop a nonuniversal software for thinking as Americans or Chinese, lawyers or teachers, Catholics or Jews, Baby Boomers or Gen-Xers. Zerubavel explores the fascinating ways in which thought communities carve up and classify reality, assign meanings, and perceive things, "defamiliarizing" in the process many taken-for-granted assumptions.

EXCELLENT coverage of S & P 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I chose Coren & Ward because a GRE study guide recommended it. C&W was the best GRE studying I did.

The writing is clear, the organization is great, the illustrations, diagrams, and inset examples are excellent. You can't do better than this to get an overview of S&P. Good introductory or mid-level book. Starts with all the basics (how the ear works, how we see color) and winds up with complex topics like how we perceive music.

A good reference book, it's even fun for browsing, or for sharing with friends and saying "This is so cool! Check this out!" (regarding some of the perceptual illusions and demonstrations etc.) How many textbooks can you say that about?

Editorial Review:

This highly acclaimed book provides a theoretically balanced introduction to the study of basic physiology and sensory responses. The authors survey a broad range of topics and present different theories and perspectives in controversial areas.

Translating Silence 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 38 people found this review helpful.

It is no accident that Carotenuto continually refers to poets such as Rilke in his discourse. He looks to them, and to all creative minds, to elucidate otherwise impenetrable or unspeakable truths about the human condition, and particularly the pain and confusion often associated with love relationships. He does so with astonishing success. Carotenuto himself writes with the impact of poetry. He is able to articulate Jungian concepts in a way that makes sense to the reader on an intuitive, existential level, and not just an academic one. In chapter after chapter, he explains that the confusion and pain often associated with love relationships -- including betrayal, jealousy, need for power, loss of identity, erotic fantasy -- are born of not merely dysfuntion, but of our longing as human beings for authenticity. I have found no other book, in literature or psychology, that has come close to providing the same quality of psychic relief. That is not to say that the book offers solutions or self-help wisdom. It does not. What it says to the reader is: You are not insane; what you are feeling is universal, and moreover, valuable and necessary. For anyone who is in love or has experienced the loss of a love, this book is an invaluable resource-- something that can be turned to for a sense of stillness. The book is especially geared toward people engaged in creative pursuits who are battling against society's expectation that they adhere to more conventional life paths. Translation: If you are a starving artist, this book is for you too.

Editorial Review:

A fascinating exploration of how we interpret and experience emotions-and how we can improve our emotional skills-by a pioneering psychologist

A renowned expert in nonverbal communication, Paul Ekman has led a revolution in our scientific understanding of emotions. Now he assembles his pathbreaking research and theories in a comprehensive look at human emotional life.

Emotions Revealed explores the evolutionary essence of anger, sadness, fear, surprise, disgust, contempt, and happiness. Drawing on his fieldwork investigating universal facial expressions in Papua New Guinea and his analysis of the prognosis of hospital patients based on their emotional profile, Ekman shows that emotions are deeply imbedded in the human species. In the process, he answers such questions as: What triggers emotions and can we stop them? How does our body signal to others whether we are slightly sad or anguished, peeved or enraged? Can we learn to distinguish between a polite smile and the genuine thing?

Unique exercises and photographs help readers identify emotions in themselves and others. Emotions Revealed is a practical, mind-opening, and potentially life-changing exploration of science and self.
