Learn to recognize and manage your emotions 5 out of 5 stars.

Seen in retroperspective I should have dedicated my book "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence" to Leslie-Cameron, given that reading her book helped me to write a reply to Goleman's book. Out of respect for her work, I keep refering people to this book.

The biggest "mistake" of this book is that it appeared 10 years too early, long before Goleman made the term "emotional intelligence" popular. Yet it does a far better job than Goleman when it comes to helping people to increase their EQ.

Leslie Cameron is one of the co-founders of NLP, even if she now has moved on and seems to be "lost" to the NLP community. I keep wondering where the field of emotional intelligence would have stood if Leslie would have kept up her work in this area.

Conclusion: even now this remains one of the best books on the topic of emotional intelligence. I hope that readers of my book will feel that it's complementary.

Patrick E.C. Merlevede, MSc -- co-author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"

Editorial Review:

Often we feel trapped and at the mercy of emotions that we don't want. This book teaches how to gain control over our emotional lives by discovering the many factors that together arouse our feelings. For instance, realizing that our emotions are the results of our memories of the past and our anticipation of the future as well as our perceptions in the moment, allows us to shift time frames in order to feel differently. Slowing the intensity and tempo of an unpleasant experience can change rage to dissatisfaction, and increasing the intensity and tempo of a pleasant one can change satisfaction into excitement. These are just a few of the elements of our experiencing that we can learn to modify to solve the problems caused by emotions and have a more satisfying life.

Life Changing! 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I have struggled with anger from the time I was a child. It's to the point now where I am desperate for change. It was that desperation that caused me to pick up this book. I loved the way the authors used real life examples and charts and diagrams. I also got so much out of the self-tests. The section on temperment was very eye opening for my personally. I definitely found my own temperment. But most of all, this book not only gives hope of real change, it lays out a process of getting there. The problem is neither quick nor easy, but it is possible. I recommend this book to anyone, Christian or not who has struggled with anger. I've read several books on the subject and this is one of the best books out there. It does not just deal with the symptoms of anger, but helps you get to the root cause of your anger. This is one book that I know I will refer to time and time again.

Editorial Review:

Best-selling authors Tim LaHaye and Bob Phillips tell you what you need to know to control the emotion of anger, enabling you to heal damaged relationships and help others deal with their anger as well.

Editorial Review:

A FASCINATING INVESTIGATION OF HOW WE NAVIGATE THE PHYSICAL WORLD, "INNER NAVIGATION" IS A LIVELY, ENGAGING ACCOUNT OF SUBCONSCIOUS MAPMAKING. Why are we so often disoriented when we come up from the subway? Do we really walk in circles when we lose our bearings in the wilderness? How -- and why -- do we get lost at all? In this surprising, stimulating book, Erik Jonsson, a Swedish-born engineer who has spent a lifetime exploring navigation over every terrain, from the crowded cities of Europe to the emptiness of the desert, gives readers extraordinary new insights into the human way-finding system. Written for the nonscientist, "Inner Navigation" explains the astonishing array of physical and psychological cues the brain uses to situate us in space and build its "cognitive maps" -- the subconscious maps it employs to organize landmarks. Humans, Jonsson explains, also possess an intuitive direction frame -- an internal compass -- that keeps these maps oriented (when it functions properly) and a dead-reckoning system that constantly updates our location on the map as we move through the world. Even the most cynical city-dweller will be amazed to learn how much of this innate sense we use every day as we travel across town or around the world. Both a scientific and a human story, "Inner Navigation" contains a rich assortment of real-life insights and examples of the navigational challenges we all face, no matter where or how we live. It's a book that is as provocative to ponder as it is delightful to lose yourself in. Don't worry: Erik Jonsson will help you find your bearings.

Editorial Review:

Now available in a Fifth Edition, An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing is the leading textbook in the field of auditory perceptionalso known as psychoacoustics. The Fifth Edition has been thoroughly updated, with more than 200 references to articles and books published since 1996. The book describes the relationships between the characteristics of the sounds that enter the ear and the sensations that they produce. Wherever possible these relationships are specified in terms of the underlying mechanisms. In other words, the goal is to impart an understanding of what the auditory system does and how it works. Topics covered include the physics of sound, the physiology of the auditory system, frequency selectivity and masking, loudness perception, temporal analysis, pitch perception, sound localization, timbre perception, the perceptual organization of complex auditory "scenes", speech perception, and practical applications such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and high-fidelity sound reproduction. The book starts from basic principles, and does not assume prior knowledge about hearing. Research results are not just described, but are interpreted and evaluated. The book includes extensive references to recent research so that those interested in a specific area can readily obtain more detailed information.

Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in psychology, speech and hearing sciences, and audiology

Will appeal to researchers and professionals involved in sound and hearing, such as audio engineers, otologists, hearing-aid designers, audiologists, and hearing aid dispensers

Emphasis on the mechanisms underlying auditory perception with key concepts clearly explained

Dimensional Color 5 out of 5 stars.

The book was new, but took a long time to get here. It arrived in good shape once it finally was mailed.

Editorial Review:

Visual models and experiments for those who wish to use expressive and evocative color in three-dimensional design. To the basic grammar of color and form presented in the first edition of Dimensional Color, artist/professor Lois Swirnoff adds a chapter on color structure and expands one on color and light. Exploring the interaction between light, color, and surface, the book provides an invaluable tool for the use of color in architecture and design. 230 color and 58 black-and-white illustrations.

An all-purpose book. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book after the sudden death of a friend. I was at a complete loss as to how to deal with it, and had never experienced this type of loss before. I was shaken.

I can't believe my good fortune to have this book. It taught me so much about the role Grief plays in our lives, as well as it's not just limited to the lose of a person or relationship. Grief can come in all forms from all things. I found it very comforting to discover this and it actually helped me to embrace grief as a natural precursor to healing.

This is definitely a great book to have around, and did give me some tremendous insights. I highly recommend this book for anyone having experience a loss or a feeling of loss that you can't seem to attach to anything. I really feel like this book was a sanity saver in a sense, as it helped me identify something I would have never recognized as 'grief-worthy.'

Editorial Review:

With clarity and compassion, this book explores different kinds of losses, including death, separation, sickness, and change. Alla Bozarth assures readers that the pain of grief won't last forever and reminds them that out of death comes rebirth

Editorial Review:

Seated in her nest of ashes, Cinderella embodies human misery. The essence of inner and outer nobility, she is the envy of her cruel stepmother and her ugly sisters. Using this familiar story, Ann and Barry Ulanov explore the psychological and theological aspects of envy and goodness. In their interpretation of the tale, they move back and forth between internal and external issues -- from how feminine and masculine parts of persons fit or do not fit together to how individuals conduct their lives with those of the same and opposite sexes, how they conflict, compete, or join harmoniously.

"The Cinderella tale, so simple and so profound, offers a direct road into and through the thickets of envying and being envied. Envy between sisters, between mothers and daughters, between the sexes, between nations ... between different parts of our own psyche, even of God -- these are the multiple places of wounding we touch in this book. The central role of envy in determining the very nature of our society -- its politics, for example -- is, we think, crucial."

After considering this rarely discussed human emotion, the authors focus on the nature of goodness as it surfaces in the envy experience. They reflect on its abundance, ability to unite disparate parts, its abiding presence, and its joy, then conclude with a glossary of terms and a brief review of the psychological literature on envy.
