More music than affirmations 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I was dissapointed that this cd contained very little in the way of affirmations, making it more of a new age music cd of 15 short tracks. I think that the purpose of this cd would have been better served with the music as a background to affirmations, as opposed to a music cd with an affirmation or two as almost an afterthought.

Food for a hungry soul 5 out of 5 stars.

I've never wrote a review on Amazon before but Susan Jeffers deserves high praise for this affirmation CD. I got hooked on Jeffers after reading "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" about 6 years ago. That book positively changed my life and was bursting with great information. This inner talk tape is so good I wore out 3 cassette tapes already so I'm very happy to see it is on CD. I never get bored of listening to it. After listening, everything is put back in perspective and you feel empowered to know the affirmations aren't just a pep talk but the confidence you've had in you all along. You will be sincerely happy you bought this CD!

Editorial Review:

In private life, we try to induce or suppress love, envy, and anger through deep acting or "emotion work," just as we manage our outer expressions of feeling through surface acting. In trying to bridge a gap between what we feel and what we "ought" to feel, we take guidance from "feeling rules" about what is owing to others in a given situation. Based on our private mutual understandings of feeling rules, we make a "gift exchange" of acts of emotion management. We bow to each other not simply from the waist, but from the heart.
But what occurs when emotion work, feeling rules, and the gift of exchange are introduced into the public world of work? In search of the answer, Arlie Hochschild closely examines two groups of public-contact workers: flight attendants and bill collectors. The flight attendant's job is to deliver a service and create further demand for it, to enhance the status of the customer and be "nicer than natural." The bill collector's job is to collect on the service, and if necessary, to deflate the status of the customer by being "nastier than natural." Between these extremes, roughly one-third of American men and one-half of American women hold jobs that call for substantial emotional labor. In many of these jobs, they are trained to accept feeling rules and techniques of emotion management that serve the company's commercial purpose.
Just as we have seldom recognized or understood emotional labor, we have not appreciated it cost to those who do it for a living. Like a physical laborer who becomes estranged from what he or she makes, an emotional laborer, such as a flight attendant, can become estranged not only from her own expressions of feeling (her smile is not "her" smile), but also from what she actually feels (her managed friendliness). This estrangement, though a valuable defense against stress, is also an important occupational hazard, because it is through our feelings that we are connected with those around us.
On the basis of this book, Hochschild was featured in Key Sociological Thinkers, edited by Rob Stones. This book was also the winner of the Charles Cooley Award in 1983, awarded by the American Sociological Association and received an honorable mention for the C. Wright Mills Award.

Editorial Review:

What causes jealousy? Who is more prone to jealousy--women or men? Why does jealousy sometimes lead to violence? How can you tell if you are a jealous person?

Dr. Pines draws on case studies from her clinical practice, jealousy workshops, and fascinating research with more than 100 individuals and couples--including interviews with people who have committed crimes of passion. Exploring the many facets of this complex emotion, Dr. Pines discusses five psychological approaches to jealousy--covering such issues as whether jealousy is the result of unresolved childhood trauma, the dynamics within a specific relationship, or the consequence of our evolutionary nature.

Romantic Jealousy offers real-life stories, simple quizzes, and an in-depth jealousy questionnaire aimed at helping readers assess their predisposition to jealousy and providing strategies to control their jealous urges. The advice offered can be applied to gay and straight couples, to those who suffer from a jealousy problem or know of a loved one who does, and for psychologists and counselors to use with their clients as a tool in therapy.

Romantic Jealousy provides us with a compelling account of the psychology of jealousy. Dr. Pines journeys into the deep recesses of the human mind and heart, exposing the dynamics of jealousy--its causes, symptoms, and danger signs--and the most effective strategies available for keeping jealousy under control.

Editorial Review:

Since the publication of the first edition in 1966, Eye and Brain has established itself worldwide as an essential introduction to the basic phenomena of visual perception. In this book, Richard L. Gregory offers clear explanations of how we see brightness, movement, color, and objects, and he explores the phenomena of visual illusions to establish principles about how perception normally works and why it sometimes fails. Although successive editions have incorporated new discoveries and ideas, Gregory completely revised and updated the book for this publication, adding more than thirty new illustrations. The phenomena of illusion continue to be a major theme in the book, in which the author makes a new attempt to provide a comprehensive classification system. There are also new sections on what babies see and how they learn to see, on motion perception, and tantalizing glimpses of the relationship between vision and consciousness and of the impact of new brain imaging techniques. In addition, the presentation of the text and illustrations has been improved by the larger format and new page design. The thousands of readers of the previous editions of Eye and Brain will find this new revised edition even more attractive and enthralling.

Editorial Review:

This new textbook by cognitive scientist and prize-winning novelist Keith Oatley, and developmental psychologist Jennifer M. Jenkins, is the first to fully span the fast-growing field of research on emotions. It is designed as a textbook for second- and third-year university courses, and the text itself is fully supported by introductions, summaries, and suggestions for further reading, plus a comprehensive bibliography and a glossary. Understanding Emotions ranges across the disciplines from philosophy and narrative literature through anthropology, evolutionary theory, brain research, psychology, and sociology, covering the entire lifespan, from infancy to adulthood. Its main theme is that emotions have functions: they set priorities among our concerns and they provide the underlying structure and human relatedness from attachment in infancy, to the warmth of family life and of friendships, to the excitements of sexuality. Interpersonal functions of emotions include those of anger which mediates conflict and often prompts renegotiation, and the more problematic effects of contempt. Emotions sometimes become dysfunctional in orders of depression, anxiety, and excessive aggression, but these disorders can also be understood in terms of how they arise. The book emphasizes the human value of emotions, with practical concern for clinical problems, education and everyday understanding.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a relatively brief but detailed description of both classic and contemporary theory and research on emotions within each of the four major theoretical traditions that have shaped—and continue to shape —how psychologists think about emotions. KEY TOPICS: Written in an informal style, it explains how each perspective defines, constructs theories about, and conducts research on emotion — and presents four often very different pictures of what emotions are thought to be. An abundance of examples drawn from real life, literature, and popular culture, and “thought experiments” help readers relate topics to the emotions they experience in their own lives.

Lacking Certain Effective Distinctions 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Tennov fails to make such distinctions as those between what she actually calls the "limerence" of a battered wife and the overwhelming universal involuntary biological phenomenon of limerence that serves the fundamental evolutionary command to "be fruitful and multiply." She asserts in her 1999 preface that she found nothing to change about her understanding of love or limerence since the original edition. Evolutionary psychology has a long way to go in its disregard of the complementary clinical findings of depth psychology and object relations theories, and Love and Limerence remains "politically correct" testament to that. (Experts in the archetypal symbols and processes of the psyche will have a field day with the case stories.)

Yet this remains a very important book, exceptionally well written for its time. If you aren't on the floor in stitches at the countless private stories of the complete insanity and embarrassment of "The Supreme Delight," then you can only be among the (lucky or unlucky?) few immune to the grip of the often cruel involuntary falling in love experience. Divine madness, indeed -- yet also of "higher" archetypal integration processes and purposes than Tennov and her evolutionary psychology colleagues are yet capable of grasping. Highly recommended for its part, especially for anyone suffering its unrequited grip, but with reservations. A General Theory of Love by Thomas Lewis, offering a stunning and poetic current understanding of the importance of limbic brain function in mammalian love and attachment that includes an understanding of depth dynamics, is must companion reading. (Don't miss Dorothy Tennov's review below.)

Editorial Review:

"Excellent. Of universal interest. It deals with the subject in an entirely new way."-Simone de Beauvoir Originally released twenty years ago, Love and Limerence has become a classic in the psychology of emotion. As relevent today as it was then, this book offers insight into love, infatuation, madness, and all flavors of emotion in between.

more helpful than I could have imagined 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I began experiencing discomfort and then panic attacks after some stressful periods in my life several years ago. The panic attacks got so bad that I had trouble going to and being at work, going out for entertainment, and at various other times including when I was at home.

For a while I couldn't figure out what was happening to me. After finally figuring out that I was having panic attacks I bought this book. Following the chapters in the book, it took about four weeks to have complete control over my anxiety. The methods for eliminating the episodes were fantastic and have really saved me in many areas of my life.

I would highly recommend this book. It addresses anxiety as well as OCD and various phobias. It's been several years since I got this book and went through it and I have not had a single panic attack since. While I still do experience everyday stress, and sometimes a lot of it - this book has made me better at recognizing and handling very stressful situations far better than I ever could prior to reading it. I wish I had read this book prior to ever having the panic attacks. It will help you change your perspective and turn stressful events into exciting and enjoyable ones.

I can't say enough good about this book - If you have panic attacks or experience anxiety or even just want to improve your ability to handle pressure, you should _definitely_ buy and read this book!!!
