Editorial Review:

The intuitive mind is a powerful force in the classroom and often an undetected one. Intuitive conceptions--knowledge or knowledge-structures that individuals acquire and use largely without conscious reflection or explicit instruction--sometimes work to facilitate learning in the classroom and other contexts. But learning may also be impeded by intuitive conceptions, and they can be difficult to dislodge as needed. The literatures in psychology and education include a large and diverse body of theory and research on intuitive conceptions, but this work is limited in some respects. This volume contributes in four ways to overcome these limitations. Understanding and Teaching the Intuitive Mind: Student and Teacher Learning:
* pulls together diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to the origin, structure, function, and development of intuitive conceptions;
* explores a diversity of academic disciplines--paying equal attention not only to mathematics and science, the fields in which intuitive concepts have been studied most extensively, but also to the social sciences, arts, and humanities;
* explicitly links theory and research to educational implications and classroom applications; and
* focuses not only on students' intuitive conceptions but also on teachers' intuitive beliefs about learning and teaching.

Although the viewpoints of the contributors are diverse, they share the belief that educational practices have much to gain by systematic studies of the intuitive learner and teacher. This volume offers state-of-the-art, research-based information and support for psychologists, teacher educators, educational administrators, teachers, prospective teachers, and others who seek to develop educational practices that are cognizant of (and responsive to) the intuitive conceptions of students and teachers.

Editorial Review:

This book is about human abilities and the ways in which people acquire and extend them. It contains many useful facts about people's learning and the mental processes that make it possible. Chapter one looks at the kinds of events that create learning, and identifies some important general principles of human learning. Chapter two examines the capabilities that children gain in their early years. They acquire a number of basic capacities that they can draw upon throughout life. These include language, reading, and numerical abilities. The acceleration of early abilities is also considered. Chapter three raises a number of intriguing questions about abilities. What exactly are they? What are their most important charactersitics? How can different capabilities and items of knowledge become joined to one another? The answers are surprisingly different from what common sense predicts.; Chapter four Considers The Important Contributions Of Motivation. A Person Has To Have good reasons for engaging in learning activities. Motivation supplies incentives for doing whatever is necessary in order to make learning happen. Chapter five investigates more advanced attainments. It looks at the effects of practising and other ways in which individuals extend their expertise. The use of memory aids and learning techniques is examined. Other topics include the influence of intelligence, creativity, the possible roles of innate gifts and talents, and child prodigies and geniuses. The best way to apply discoveries concerning learning and the acquisition of abilities is to use them for our own daily activities. Chapter six addresses the question of how to learn and study more effectively. It introduces ways of reading more effectively, and gives advice on improving writing skills and studying for exams. The aim here is to help the reader to succeed better at gaining needed capabilities.

Informative, thought-provoking, and understandable! 4 out of 5 stars.

Healy begins this interesting, understandable book by proposing that kids' brains must be different today than what they used to be. While she offers no conclusive evidence for her contentions, she does provide a great deal of circumstantial evidence for them. An in-depth description of the influence of language on mental development is given; the importance of verbal interaction bertween the child and the adult is emphasized. However, changes in our use of language are not encouraging in this regard. Issues related to attention and learning disabilities of students in today's schools are also raised. Healy launches an attack on video games and television, including the children's program, Sesame Street. I think any adult, not just parents, will find her work interesting and thought-provoking. In addition, she provides many thoughts on the impact of poverty on children's brain development and success in today's schools. Lastly, Healy offers recommendations for improving students' learning, many of which would result in major changes in many schools. In the end, the question remains about the type of skills that are needed for our information-age, changing society. Healy believes curiosity in our children must always remain. Her purpose in writing is to raise awareness about the needs of the brain today--that she does!

Editorial Review:

Dr. Healy examines the decline in schools and offers concrete advice for improving our students' endangered minds. A fascinating assessment which argues that children in today's fast-paced electronic world use their brains differently than did children in past generations.

Editorial Review:

By establishing a conceptual framework and a common language for educators to work together, this volume attempts to answer the challenge facing all teachers -- how can students improve the quality of their thinking? Methods of strengthening the thought process include: helping students learn to monitor their attention and commitments; asking questions that require students to organize, analyze, and integrate information; setting tasks that involve complex processes such as problem solving and research; and modeling and reinforcing fair-mindedness.

Connecting Teaching and Learning with Personality 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I have recently posted a number of reviews of the Dunns' books on
Teaching and Learning Styles. Here we have a different approach based
on temperaments and personality differences. The Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator (MBTI) and its developments by David Keirsey serve as the
basis for the whole framework. It is best to first do the MBTI test,
or the Keirsey's 2 brief tests, freely accessible on the Internet
(also in the book, Please Understand Me). There are already numerous
good books on MBTI. Here the authors make excellent applications to
education. After describing in depth different types in school
contexts, you get a useful summary in Table 12, of 4 basic groups of
student preferences: Guardian, Artisan, Idealist and Rational. Ch. 12
gives many classroom techniques and a summary chart that help teachers
to be more aware of what they can do to match the personality and
learning style differences of the students. Overall, this book is a
great help for making teaching and learning more fruitful when we
understand and respect the students' uniqueness and differences in
personality.

In this utterly engaging and comprehensive text, Guy Lefranois explains, applies, illustrates and investigates psychological principles and classroom practices in a manner that is at once concise and informative as well as encouraging and entertaining. His approach is motivational, based on his belief that ''the best teaching decisions are based on sound psychological principles applied with enthusiasm and imagination and tempered with a love of children and of teaching.'' Covering the bases of human development as it relates to learning, teaching, and thinking, Lefranois draws on the most recent and pertinent research to present a well-rounded, thorough, and relevant discussion of psychological principles.

Editorial Review:

What happens when a child's or adult's existing theories come into contact with new evidence? The authors examine these fundamental processes of knowledge acquisition, using a microgenetic method in which the coordination of theory and evidence is followed in sessions over several months. Working on problems in physical and social domains, both children and adults show progress in the level of strategies used—progress that was maintained when new problems were introduced. The authors identify multiple forms of competence—strategic, metastrategic, and metacognitive—involved in the process of developmental change, and they relate their work to issues in the study of conceptual change, causal and scientific reasoning, and the development of thinking skills.
