Editorial Review:

Expertise has been around since the dawn of civilisation, but until recently the creation of experts was able to go on without anyone having to understand it, or pay any attention to its social impact. Today, as societies compete to produce more and better experts, the need grows to understand expertise - what lies behind expert performance, how it is acquired, and what keeps people functioning like experts. The authors examine the nature of expert knowledge, both the part that shows and the much larger part that is hidden, and offer an explanation of how it comes about. Hard work, practice, and experience are not enough to make an expert. The expert is recognised by an ability to solve nonroutine problems in a given domain. The expert's secret is their willingness to work at the edge of their competence and to keep reconstructing their skills at higher levels. Expertlike tendencies have been found in some university students, and even some schoolchildren function more like experts than like the other students in their classes. Yet schooling often undermines the development of expertise. Bereiter and Scardamalia describe a kind of classroom culture, the "knowledge-building community" which supports expertlike learning, and extend these ideas to the picture of an "expert society", in which expertise is normal rather than exceptional. Expertise is an expression of the uniquely human potential to go beyond the competencies given us by nature.

A Great Resource!! 4 out of 5 stars.

Diane Connell's "Brain-Based Strategies To Reach Every Learner" is a great resource for teachers AND parents!
As a primary school teacher for 20 years, and now currently working as a consultant in schools with parents, students and teachers on how to switch students on to learn in a way that makes sense to them, I can highly recommend this book. Crammed full of really useful information - and presented in a style that makes sense - you don't have to be a teacher to understand the message that we all learn in different ways... and that learning can be fun!
For teachers there are so many great tips and ideas which can be easily implemented in the classroom and for parents who want to find out what makes their child 'tick', this book is a real revelation. A top read - well done Diane!

Editorial Review:

This is the second edition of a textbook that has met with enthusiastic acclaim since its publication in 1988. It explores in detail theories and discussions of how children think and learn. It also looks at the practical implications of research and acknowledges some of the difficult problems teachers face when trying to put theory and research into practice in the classroom.

Although retaining much of the structure and information of the first edition, the author has now included a new, overview chapter in which he outlines some of the major developments that have occurred over the past decade. Ensuing chapters have also been amended to discuss these changes in relation to the topics addressed in each. The chapter on mathematics has been substantially re-worked to include new information in both theoretical understanding and also knowledge of children's understanding, while the final chapter on education incorporates a new section on educational technology and its relation to major theories of learning and development.

Editorial Review:

The left hand has traditionally represented the powers of intuition, feeling, and spontaneity. In this classic book, Jerome Bruner inquires into the part these qualities play in determining how we know what we do know; how we can help others to know-that is, to teach; and how our conception of reality affects our actions and is modified by them.

The striking and subtle discussions contained in On Knowing take on the core issues concerning man's sense of self: creativity, the search for identity, the nature of aesthetic knowledge, myth, the learning process, and modem-day attitudes toward social controls, Freud, and fate. In this revised, expanded edition, Bruner comments on his personal efforts to maintain an intuitively and rationally balanced understanding of human nature, taking into account the odd historical circumstances which have hindered academic psychology's attempts in the past to know man.

Writing with wit, imagination, and deep sympathy for the human condition, Jerome Bruner speaks here to the part of man's mind that can never be completely satisfied by the right-handed virtues of order, rationality, and discipline.

Extremely helpful to any parent of an LD child. 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I recommended this book to the LD Specialist at my childs school who couldn't thank me enough for finding this book so she has a sound resource to suggest to parents of LD children. This book not only helps you learn to identify your childs learning disabilities or learning difficulties, but also to understand them. Also, it provides the information you need to talk with the school knowledgeably about testing and LD services. It helps you understand what your part of this process should be and tells you what you need to know to successfully participate in the process. It gives you strategies your child can use in everyday life situations that will help him/her learn. And it helps you with information about the social and emotional needs of your growing child. I no longer feel helpless in dealing with this issue. This book has given me the knowledge, but also very importantly, concrete ways to help my child be as successful as can be.

Editorial Review:

Over 12 million Americans are identified as learning disabled; as many as one in six families is affected. Yet the lack of understandable literature on the subject has made it difficult for parents to be truly informed. This guide presents expert information on this crucial topic in language which parents and educators can easily comprehend.

Editorial Review:

Finally, an up-to-date textbook that provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles of motor control and motor learning in one text. The author integrates knowledge from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience to provide students with a more complete understanding of the multilevel processes that contribute to the acquisition and control of movement skills. Each section of the book introduces the most important theoretical models in each particular area, followed by theoretical principles and then illustrated with practical examples drawn from movement, skill, and clinical settings. The breadth of the practical applications will appeal to students preparing to enter a variety of professions that require a strong knowledge of motor control and learning principles. The strong contemporary and multilevel review of the literature in both motor control and learning will provide the student with the most comprehensive and user-friendly introduction to two highly integrated areas of study in movement science today.

Editorial Review:

Synthesizing the breadth of current knowledge on brain-behavior relationships in atypically developing children, this important volume integrates theories and data from multiple disciplines. Leading authorities present their latest research on specific clinical problems, including autism, Williams syndrome, learning and language disabilities, ADHD, and issues facing infants of diabetic mothers. In addition, the effects of social stress and maltreatment on brain development and behavior are thoroughly reviewed. Illustrating the uses of cutting-edge methods from developmental neuroscience, developmental psychology, and cognitive science, the contributors emphasize the implications of their findings for real-world educational and clinical practices.

An authoritative stand-alone reference, this book can also be purchased in combination with the companion volume on typical development. Together, these volumes provide a comprehensive overview of the field. They represent the contemporary successor to Dawson and Fischer's influential single-volume work, Human Behavior and the Developing Brain.
