Editorial Review:

So your memory's not what it used to be? You forget people's names, or what you were just about to say, or why you went into the kitchen. Often you forget where you left your keys (your wallet, your glasses, your list of Things to Do Tomorrow). And you worry. You wonder: Could this mean I am losing it? Join the crowd, friend. there are seventy-eight million baby boomers in the country, and memory loss is the number one concern of the boomer generation. The "Worried Well," specialists call them. They worry because they do not know that most memory lapses that begin in middle age are universal and normal. Award-winning journalist Martha Lear, who gave voice to widespread frustration with medical care in her New York Times bestselling memoir Heartsounds, now explores this kind of forgetfulness--why it happens, and when, and what can be done about it. She interviews distinguished neuroscientists, psychologists, and evolutionary biologists, as well as friends and strangers about their own memory lapses. Interweaving dramatic new findings from brain-scan studies with often-hilarious anecdotes, Lear covers topics as fresh and provocative as the upside of memory loss, the differences between His and Her memories, why we are actually wired to forget, and what the future holds for memory enhancement (you can't imagine what's in store). You'll learn things you never knew before about why your memory behaves in such maddening ways. You'll find comfort and reassurance. And you'll probably find yourself on every page.

I picked up this book in a garage sale a few months ago. Just so you dont get any ideas, I'm not a forgetful bloke. However it is impossible for anyone to remember it all and the thought of learning new tricks to keep my brain young was something I just could not pass on. Turns out that this book is a really comprehensive guide on all things related to our brain and memory, more than what I was interested in knowing. It may prove to be really useful for people who need to refer to information of this sort for research. For me though, I quickly browsed chapter 3 & 6, the two chapters that the text quickly points has memory training skills. In both these chapters, there are exercises that involve active observation, taking mental snapshots and other organization exercises. I was too lazy to do them all however I did have some fun with mom on the memory assessments. Some of these exercises I have found to be really useful in everyday life, I now use them to remember where I park my car in the mall (hence the title) and such, so they are definitely worth going through. Another good chapter was chapter 5, 'Get fit with mental aerobics.' This chapter is filled with puzzles and brain teasers to workout the brain through creative thinking. Basically exercises to show us how ignorant and absent minded we really are. Nevertheless I couldn't resist attempting all of the exercises in this chapter. Since i did not read the entire book, I don't feel its appropriate that I rate it.

Editorial Review:

Can one forget atrocities? Should one forgive abusers? Ought we not hope for the final reconciliation of all the wronged and all wrongdoers alike, even if it means spending eternity with perpetrators of evil? We live in an age when it is generally accepted that past wrongs -- genocides, terrorist attacks, bald personal injustices -- should be constantly remembered. But Miroslav Volf here proposes the radical idea that letting go of such memories -- after a certain point and under certain conditions -- may actually be the appropriate course of action.

While agreeing with the claim that to remember a wrongdoing is to struggle against it, Volf notes that there are too many ways to remember wrongly, perpetuating the evil committed rather than guarding against it. In this way, "the just sword of memory often severs the very good it seeks to defend." He argues that remembering rightly has implications not only for the individual but also for the wrongdoer and for the larger community.

Volf's personal stories of persecution offer a compelling backdrop for his search for theological resources to make memories a wellspring of healing rather than a source of deepening pain and animosity. Controversial, thoughtful, and incisively reasoned, The End of Memory begins a conversation hard to ignore.

Cognitive psychology of memory 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 23 people found this review helpful.

this is the best review of the cognitive psychology of memory, by one of the leading experts in the field. I personally did not enjoy the artistic aspest of the book, but many say it was complementing. Now there are much better cognitive neuroscience books on memory -Kandel and Squires books, Steven Roses, among others- but as for the psychological aspects, this book stands above all others. At times it reads too much like a collection of case studies, but few would deny that lesion studies have contribuited a lot to an understanding of the brain/mind.
Most of the memory field is covered: recogntion vs. recall, implicit vs. explicit, episodic vs. procedural, short -long term, working memory, genral, emotional, semantic, etc..... but there is also a welcome and thorough discussion of false and recovered memories. In no other field can one see better the imediateimpact that cognitive psychology of memory has on legal and social issues. Schacter effectively explains everything we know about the phenomenon. As for the other themes, adequate and sufficient reviews are given. I personally would have liked a bit more of neuroscience, but it is a great read nontheless. There is also not much mention of the relationship between memory and other higher cognitive processes, like consciousness (a good place for speculation) or attention. But Schacter sticks to what is known, and does it well.
AS an introduction to any aspect of memory studies, few texts are better than this one. But I would tell anyone interested to also read other Schacter books, as well as more pure psychology and neurological texts on the subject. (see Seven Sins of Memory by the same author, Kandel and Squires Memory:from Minds to Molecules and Roses The Making of Memory among others).

Editorial Review:

Memory. There may be nothing more important to human beings than our ability to enshrine experience and recall it. While philosophers and poets have elevated memory to an almost mystical level, psychologists have struggled to demystify it. Now, according to Daniel Schacter, one of the most distinguished memory researchers, the mysteries of memory are finally yielding to dramatic, even revolutionary, scientific breakthroughs. Schacter explains how and why it may change our understanding of everything from false memory to Alzheimer’s disease, from recovered memory to amnesia with fascinating firsthand accounts of patients with striking—and sometimes bizarre—amnesias resulting from brain injury or psychological trauma.

Editorial Review:

Why can't you remember where you put your keys? Or the title of the movie you saw last week? Or the name of your favorite restaurant?

Acclaimed journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin takes readers on a lively journey to explain what happens to memory and attention in middle age. Along the way, she turns up fresh scientific findings, explores the dark regions of the human brain, and hears the intimate confessions of high-functioning midlife adults who—like you—want to understand exactly what's going on upstairs.

Anyone older than forty knows that forgetfulness can be unnerving, frustrating, and sometimes terrifying. With compassion and humor, Jakobson Ramin sets out to discover what midlife forgetfulness is all about—from the perspectives of physiology, psychology, and sociology. Relentless in her search for answers to questions about her own unreliable memory, she explores the factors that determine how well—or poorly—one's brain will age. She consults experts in the fields of sleep, stress, traumatic brain injury, hormones, genetics, and dementia, as well as specialists in nutrition, cognitive psychology, and the burgeoning field of drug-based cognitive enhancement. The landscape of the midlife brain is not what you might think, and to understand its strengths and weaknesses turns out to be the best way to cope.

Jakobson Ramin's reporting of the stories of a wide array of midlife men and women will resonate with readers. Her audience will glean spectacular insight into how to elicit the very best performance from a middle-aged brain. A groundbreaking work that represents the best of narrative nonfiction, this is a timely, highly readable, and much-needed book for anyone whose memory is not what it used to be.

Editorial Review:

What is memory and where in the brain is it stored? How is memory storage accomplished? These key questions are addressed in Memory, the first book for a general readership to offer an up-to-date, comprehensive overview of memory from molecules and cells to brain systems and cognition.

The recent convergence of psychology and biology has resulted in an exciting new synthesis of knowledge about learning and remembering. Some of the central issues include:

What happens in the brain to determine whether we remember something for a long time?
Is memory stored at a particular place in the brain?
How reliable are our memories? What makes memories deteriorate?
Why is it harder to remember as we get older?
How do emotions influence memory?
Are there unconscious memories? Written by two scientists responsible for some of the fundamental research in the field, Memory is ideal for general audiences who are interested in discovering what is currently known about one of the basic aspects of human existence.

Editorial Review:

In Archive Fever, Jacques Derrida deftly guides us through an extended meditation on remembrance, religion, time, and technology—fruitfully occasioned by a deconstructive analysis of the notion of archiving. Intrigued by the evocative relationship between technologies of inscription and psychic processes, Derrida offers for the first time a major statement on the pervasive impact of electronic media, particularly e-mail, which threaten to transform the entire public and private space of humanity. Plying this rich material with characteristic virtuosity, Derrida constructs a synergistic reading of archives and archiving, both provocative and compelling.

"Judaic mythos, Freudian psychoanalysis, and e-mail all get fused into another staggeringly dense, brilliant slab of scholarship and suggestion."—The Guardian

"[Derrida] convincingly argues that, although the archive is a public entity, it nevertheless is the repository of the private and personal, including even intimate details."—Choice

"Beautifully written and clear."—Jeremy Barris, Philosophy in Review

"Translator Prenowitz has managed valiantly to bring into English a difficult but inspiring text that relies on Greek, German, and their translations into French."—Library Journal

Real Value 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The huge amount of research over the past 50 years is enough to convince even Freud's most loyal votaries that his science amounted to little more than--wish fulfillment!

But so what? Does anyone read Freud for science anymore? I hope not, but he's still an absolutely essential author.

The Freudian system of the unconscious was used by scored of brilliant artists in the 20th century. If we want to understand Faulkner, Anderson, Larsen, Dali, or Picasso, we'll need to read at least two books by Mr Freud: this one and The Interpretation of Dreams (only James Strachey's translation!).

Are they good science? Few believe that anymore. Insteadm they serve as excellent and useful metaphors for better understanding art and literature. What you do from there is up to you: you could just as easily use Freud's "nonsense" to call the art "nonsense," or you could marvel at the meaning inhered in the metaphor as used by the author. The situation and philosophical background would of course determine the matter.

Anyhow, you can't go wrong with this one here. It's a quick read; it's full of great stories; it's full of wonderful nonsense; and it's so, so very useful for literature without being offensive. Moreover, this book is easily Freud's most innocent.

Bad science. Bad philosophy. Bad theology. Useful artistic metaphor. Necessary material. Great reading!

(Only read the Alan Tyson translation as edited by James Strachey.)

Editorial Review:

This collection of writings is famous for giving us the phrase 'Freudian slip'. It also builds up a strong social history of Vienna and the middle-class social milieu of Freud and his patients. Through a series of case histories, some no longer than a few lines long, Freud explores how it is that normal people make slips of speech, writing, reading and remembering in their everyday life, and reveals what it is that they betray about the existence of a sub-text or subliminal motive to our conscious actions. As he explains, most of these slips tend of be of a relatively anodyne nature, but some are a little more sinister, particularly those where pride or thwarted love are concerned...
