Fascinating and fun 5 out of 5 stars.

Ornstein's early writings on right brain/left brain differences led to a veritable explosion of research and writing on the subject. In this book he's written an excellent summary of the current state of our understanding: although it's clear that the halves of the brain have different areas of specialization, he emphasizes strongly that they need to work together to enable us to function fully as human beings. He's bemused (and sometimes annoyed) at the popular tendency to romanticize the right brain as the seat of creativity and denigrate the left brain as an unimaginative literalist; the facts show that both halves are involved in such complex human activities as listening to music and understanding jokes. His summary of the 19th-century debates on brain functioning was very useful and informative. And his conclusion that psychology needs to pay more attention to the various ways human beings have pursued spiritual development over the millennia is, I think, a very timely reminder: psychology has tended to dismiss this behavior as "superstition," but, as other writers have pointed out (e.g., Epstein's "Thoughts Without a Thinker"), it has as much to do with developing the full power of your mind as with addressing something "out there." Ornstein writes clearly and humorously, and the book packs an amazing amount of knowledge into its rather brief length.

Editorial Review:

"I began this book with a pretty firm prejudice," says Robert Ornstein of his survey of the two halves of the human brain. "I believed that after two decades of research we'd find ... that there might be little to distinguish the two sides." Instead, he concluded that "the division of the mind is profound," with deep roots in evolution, embryonic development, and society. It is profound, but not simplistic: Ornstein shows how the right hemisphere is neither a chimpanzeelike moron nor a mystical genius. It provides the context, the big picture, while the left hemisphere keeps track of the details. Doris Lessing says, "I have always admired Robert Ornstein's ability to explain difficult scientific ideas to ordinary people"; Paul Ehrlich calls The Right Mind "the most innovative, fascinating work yet to appear on the role of the two hemispheres of the brain."

Editorial Review:

This small book is the first comprehensive essay to place archetypal psychology within a major tradition of modern thought, the tradition of mythical thinking, and to recognize imagination as the primal force and basic reality of human life. By drawing upon the writings of four twentieth-century thinkers, the author clarifies the post-Jungian direction of psychology as it moves toward poetic and polythesic imagination. He then compares the radical acheivements of this direction in resolving the "ego-question" with the methods and ideas of the East: Buddhism, Tantrism, Zen, and Vedanta.

The author's grasp of understanding, easy familiarity with his subject, and startling insights together make this book both an introductory text and an advance into new territory.

Best book in differential psychology in the 1990s 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Currently, it stands as the most comprehensive tome on g ever written. More than that though, it is a masterwork in the field of intelligence and individual differences. If Jensen's place as one of the premier scientists in the field of psychology wasn't already firmly entrenched, this work definitely put him there.

Editorial Review:

The g factor--general mental ability--is the major construct for understanding both individual differences and the average differences between groups (race and sex) in educational and occupational attainment. It is also germane to social issues of national importance. Jensen fully and clearly explains the psychometric, statistical, genetic, and physiological basis of g, as well as the major theoretical challenges to the concept. For decades a key construct in differential psychology, the g factor's significance for the brain sciences as well as for education, sociology, anthropology, evolutionary psychology, economics, and public policy is clearly evident in this, the most comprehensive treatment of g available.

Useful guidelines for living in a stressful world 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Having read Dr. Manz's other works and having used his Mastering Self-Leadership book (co-authored with Dr. Christopher Neck) in my university classes, I was familiar with his philosphies and approaches to handling challenges in life. However, the timing for me in reading this book could not have come at a better time. The theme of Emotional Discipline is that we can manage our emotions to bring rewards and reduce stress even in the most dire of circumstances. I had brought the book to read on my plane ride after a week long national academic conference. Before boarding the plane, however, I had just endured a grueling 1 1/2 hour wait in a security line before I could even enter my plane's gate in Seattle. While in line, I brought attention to airport workers that my departure time was drawing near, and asked if I could be sped through line to get to my plane. I was told that my airline would come out and bring their customers through when the departure time drew near. Well, Southwest and Continental airlines came out to help their customers, but my airline (heck, I'll tell you who it was--Delta) did not. Finally, after getting to the security check, I was pulled out of line for inspection. It was 12:50 p.m. when this happened, and my flight was to leave at 12:55 p.m. Finally, I made it to my gate, and the airline workers informed me that they almost left without me. Once aboard the plane, I asked the attendants why they had not sent anyone out to help their customers like the other airlines. Their answer was it wasn't their responsibility, and that it was my fault for almost missing the plane. I don't mind waiting on a plane due to delays, but being blamed as a customer for an organization's bureaucratic failings doesn't go over well with me. So after almost missing my plane, my adrenaline and anger soaring, and the poor service of the flight attendants, I thought I'd unwind by watching the movie on the flight, which turned out to be--you guessed it--"Anger Management" with Adam Sandler. The opening scene covers Mr. Sandler having a problem with an airline attendant, which leads to his future problems. Hitting too close to home at this point, I decided to pull out Dr. Manz's book and read it, hoping to relax a little from the building tension of the trip. And I'm glad I did, because the book provides a framework and guidelines for handling dilemmas as I had just endured.

The book opens with explanations and research discussing the impact emotions have on a person's body, mind, and spirit, and, just as importantly, the interaction of all these factors. While this is needed in order to substantiate and support what was to come later in the book, the part I found most enjoyable was the 25 strategies a person can use in having a more satisfying life. The strategies are broken into mind, body, and spirit, and Dr. Manz offers enough strategies that the reader can pick and choose which serve that person's individual needs, purposes, and personality. The strategies I found particularly interesting were on "Directing Your Inner Theatre" (how to view a situation from a more objective perspective) and "Other Mind-Centered Emotional Discipline Choices" (a list of specific practices and exercises for gaining emotional balance that can be adapted to your own personal needs). There were also interesting examples for consideration to be worked into your life, such as baroque music and tai chi. Where the strategies are particularly useful are in the sources and examples cited throughout the book, so that the reader has guidance in where to go should they want to read further on that subject. Another bonus of the book is the inspiring and educational quotes throughout the book. The book is worth its price alone for these informative statements from such renowned thinkers as Blaise Pascal, Thomas Merton, and George Bernard Shaw. I can see myself pulling this book off my shelf when faced with stressful situations in the future. I was able to read the book on my aforementioned 4 hour flight, and by the time I arrived in Dallas I was feeling much more relaxed and calm after absorbing the perspectives in the book. It is a very satisfying book with useful strategies that I will encourage my friends and colleagues to read.

Editorial Review:

Emotions sometimes get the better of us all, but you can learn how to analyze and manage your emotional reactions in any situation. Emotional Discipline details 5 easy-to-learn steps and 25 specific strategies for responding to your feelings in the present and preparing for emotional challenges in the future. This remarkable approach combines mind, body, and spirit to help you deal with arguably the most challenging part of the human condition: the constant fluctuations in how you feel that color your experience of life and limit your personal effectiveness. Joining the intelligensia... 4 out of 5 stars.
27 of 31 people found this review helpful.

It is often said that comedy serves the same role in society today that the court jester used to play in courts of old -- not just a person who helps to release tension and entertain, but also a prophetic voice, a truth-teller, someone who can deal with the unpleasantness of reality without becoming a threatening or problematic figure. Steve Allen definitely falls into the latter category -- while there is no question that Allen's talents in the entertainment field are considerable (he was the creator of the Tonight Show, which is still running, in addition to 'intelligent' shows such as 'Meeting of the Minds' for PBS), he brings an uncharacteristic intelligence to his productions (which includes more than 50 books, in addition the work in acting media).

Steve Allen coined the term 'Dumbth' for the earlier edition of this book. He speculates (in ways that might put professional educators to shame) on the level of ignorance and stupidity (not the same things) in society today. Allen was one of the originators of the 'Man in the Street' interview, asking such as questions as 'Would you vote for an acknowledged heterosexual?' and finding the most bizarre responses. Reality being twice as true but half as funny as most comedy, he highlights the difficulties children have with geography -- not only could half a class of children in Miami not find London on the map (and they thought the Falklands were off the English Coast, that Quebec was in Alaska, etc.) but also that eight percent of these kids -- in Miami, remember -- could not find Miami on the map...

After recounting tale after harrowing tale, Allen does something few comedians (and alas, sometimes few educators) do, and that is to suggest solutions! His earlier text suggested 81; in republication, Allen came up with 20 more solutions, for 101 in all. Some are simple logical propositions, well known to logicians and others trained in analytical reasoning -- beware of erroneous assumptions, drawing conclusions from insufficient evidence, etc. Others are more personal in nature -- not falling in love with the first answer, not looking for the easiest answer, not giving in to prejudice or superstition. Once could easily make a calendar out of these 101 rules, as they are each but a page or two in length, yet contain wisdom beyond common sense.

Rule 75 is perhaps the most important one -- it perhaps should be elevated to Rule 1 status. 'Stop thinking you "don't have time" to improve yourself.' This is good advice, not just for figuring out reasoning and intelligence skills, but for almost everything; the wise person will understand that there is time for the important things, and the designation 'important' is truly up to us.

Allen's warning in the final rule (be sceptical of the internet) as well as his concern about rationality and reason not being a cure-all (sometimes it is merely a placebo) deserve further treatment, alas, not from the great Allen himself, but perhaps some disciple shall. Allen states that sometimes the problem is not that people are not rational and reasonable, but rather too much so -- that they take the processes and results to such extremes that it becomes difficult to deal with; often this leads to another kind of problem of reason, the most insidious and difficult kind to deal with -- the problem of those who are correct.

An interesting text, a good and revealing trek through the state of current culture, done with humour and grace. This is not a text on logic, so don't go into it expecting such. Allen wraps much of his personal life and experience into his narrative, so do expect that -- Allen has lived an interesting life, and who among us hasn't seen the truly stupid taking place around us daily?

Editorial Review:

Critics raved about the first edition of "DUMBTH"--a work that one described as "the ultimate how-to book." Now updated and expanded with twenty new ways to think better, this is Steve Allen's humorous and provocative examination of the increasing American tendency toward muddle-headedness and ineptitude, which Allen uniquely defines as "dumbth." After cataloguing a host of hilarious and sometimes alarming personal encounters with shoddy workmanship, bad service, failures to communicate, and the general breakdown in the capacity to reason, Allen offers 101 solutions to this widespread problem. He recommends that we add a fourth "R"--reasoning--to the traditional reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. Always witty and thought-provoking, 'DUMBTH" makes a compelling case that thinking well, like any skill, requires study, practice, and application.

Chapman University in Orange CA uses this text for Cognitive Psychology. It has a wealth of information as well as experiments to help you understand the concept being discussed.

Editorial Review:

Providing a comprehensive, approachable treatment of current cognitive psychology, this fourth edition of a classic volume, formerly entitled Human Memory and Cognition, maintains the direct style that has proved so popular in the past. Chapter topics include an introduction to cognitive psychology; the cognitive science approach; perception and pattern recognition; attention; short-term, working memory; learning and remembering; knowing; using knowledge in the real world; language; comprehension: written and spoken language; decisions, judgments, and reasoning; and problem solving. For individuals interested in cognitive psychology and memory.
