Editorial Review:

This text makes an experiential approach to listening instruction, providing extensive supplemental applications and cases within the context of a sound theoretical framework. Brownell encourages students to view listening as a process involving six interrelated components. Each component is developed along the parallel dimensions of theory and skill building. Within the unifying theoretical framework of the HURIER model, students not only develop an understanding of the listening process, they also acquire specific, observable listening skills. This behavioral approach enables students to increase their listening effectiveness while developing an understanding of listening-related research and theory. The impact of culture, technology, and globalization is also explored. Ethical questions are raised through sidebars, and students are challenged to consider the responsibilities associated with listening behavior. Extensive self-assessment instruments, individual and group activities, and case studies further distinguish this engaging text. Students readily recognize the important role listening plays in their daily lives, and acquire strategies to improve their listening behavior.

Not so fast 3 out of 5 stars.

This in response to a negative previous review of this book. Valerie Hunt may not be the most scientific of writers but do not dismiss her work because of that. The "mathematical chaos formula" picture you are criticizing as "Lissajous" patterns are not Lissajous. This image was derived using a mathematical algorithm designed specificaly to visualize/search for chaotic patterns in measured data. When this algorithm is applied to random noise, no pattern is produced. When a data set is chaotic, patterns start to appear. This algorithm is well described in many chaos theory books and it is used in physics and engineering. Valerie Hunt is not a mathematician but she does consult mathematicians who know what tools to use to analyze such data. But I do agree the book does not show enough details of her experimental results. I happen to know more of the details thru other sources and I happen to use the same mathematical tools in my work.

Infinite Mind by Valerie Hunt 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a thoroughly researched, beautifully written BIBLE on the current concept of energy, collective consciousness, etc. Interesting reasoning on our connectedness and the power therein if used. This is a must read, must ponder and must adjust our lives kind of text, and "text" it surely is. Read it, its a gift to yourself.

Succinct and Succulent 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Before You Think Another Thought is a very concise and succinct presentation illuminating how our thoughts and beliefs create our life, followed by how our beliefs then shape our experiences. Dr. Doyle presents very useful tools with excellent insights. I also appreciated his candor with real-life situations and empowering personal examples.

Points to ponder and simplicity at it's finest:
* Thoughtforms exist to fulfill their intent.
* Thoughtforms attract similar thoughtforms.
* Thoughts that I accept as true become my beliefs.
* Beliefs determine my experience.

Doyle's contribution simplifies what can be a complex subject on how we create our reality and how our beliefs impact our life experiences. I would love to see this book introduced into our entire educational system as a basic premise for the law of attraction in action. This leading edge material was shared long before the Secret became a global phenomena. I highly recommend this book!

A very practical book on handling everyday situations 5 out of 5 stars.
61 of 61 people found this review helpful.

How to Disagree Without Being Disagreeable is the 12th book in the Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense series. The first three books present the general principles of the Gentle Art and how to use them to handle hostile language coming at you. The remaining books each deal with using these principles in specific situations. Each can stand alone and the ones I have read have been very relevant to their subject. In this book, Dr. Elgin discusses how to impart negative messages or criticism to others without increasing hostility in your language environment. The first part of the book deals with an overview of hostile language and its cost both to society and our personal lives. I thought this information was interesting because the way we use language is taken for granted and it is a fascinating idea that each one making deliberate and thoughtful changes in the way they use language can have a great positive influence in our world. The remainder of the book gives practical ways to pass on negative messages without resorting to hostile language or making an already difficult situation even more so. Where it is applicable, the different ways situations are handled by men and women are discussed. One of the things I appreciated most in this part of the book was the use of scenarios. These dialogues enabled me to see and hear both the way a particular situation is handled and how using that particular technique would be better. Since there are many occasions which require the passing of negative information, this is a very practical book and one I would recommend for everyone. As a volunteer reference librarian in a public library system, I think it would be a good addition to public libraries also.

Editorial Review:

You'll learn to:

  • Handle aggressive, negative comments about race, politics, or religion
  • Provide discipline without increasing hostility
  • Use language that reduces tension and creates rapport in every situation

Boring 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was a boring and tedious book and I was glad to be done with it. It was very disappointing, as it was basically a rehash of psychology experiments involving vision, with some basic neurobiology thrown in as background. While it is well written, it goes nowhere. There is very little mention of a "soul" until chapter 18, and there is, of course, no mention of a scientific search for it, or research on it. There cannot be. It pains me to think that Crick spent years on this endeavor. The answer he seeks will come only after a long and arduous study of all aspects of the brain, its anatomy and function, as well as that of the neurons that constitute it. While I agree with Crick in what he is trying to show---that the "I" that is each of us, is the activity of neurons. How to demonstrate this is the problem. Instead of working backwards from behavior to structure, it would be more fruitful to begin with DNA---the genes that determine brain structure, from the neurons to the brain's gross anatomy, and try to reach an explanation of behavior based on the molecular biology of the brain. However, the human brain may be too complex and the problem thus too intractable. Start with something simple, a flatworm perhaps, and work up from there.

Editorial Review:

The Nobel Prize-winning physicist who discovered the molecular structure of DNA examines what makes humans sentient beings, offering an analysis and description of how the brain sees.

Informative and helpful 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As an undergraduate TA, I became familiar with this book when my supervising professor chose it for her undergraduate learning and cognition course. The text presents detailed coverage of the topics in an accessible style. I disagree with the previous reviewer about the value of the discussion of previous experiments. By providing a discussion of selected experiments rather than an exhaustive survey of the empirical literature, the intricacies of problem solving activity in cognitive psychology are highlighted. The text uses a thematic approach throughout, and incorporates real world examples, case studies, and useful examples of experiments on specific topics. I found myself wishing that this text had been used in the cognition course that I had previously taken.

Editorial Review:

"Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology" by R. Reed Hunt and Henry C. Ellis is a brief core text with a value conscious price tag for courses in cognitive psychology. The 7th edition of this text presents brief coverage of perception, attention, memory, knowledge, problem solving, and emotion in a friendly and accessible style. By discussing selected experiments rather than exhaustively surveying the empirical literature, authors enable students to appreciate the intricacies of problem solving activity in cognition. The text incorporates real world examples, case studies, and useful key experiments on specific topics.

Not for those without background 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book is not intended for the general reader, reader with cellular neuroscience background, but has a target audience of advanced undergraduate or graduate level students with relevant background. Also would be useful for the psychology professional without specific or with dated cognitive neuroscience background, or others intending a research or applied clinical career in the area. Appropriate background would necessarily be at least an undergraduate course in cognitive psychology, with additional help provided by biological psychology or a medical professional in neurology. Discussions of principles and mechanisms are at a "functional machinery" level and thus would not make sense to those without some previous training in those principles. It just isn't a basic text, thus, no glossary of basic terms is included. Yes, the material is both abstract and complex, but so is brain function, and we are just beginning to learn. There are very, very few textbooks that survey this area which only became a separate field of study sometime around 1986. Other reading material in the field consists entirely of professional level chapters in compiled and edited texts. The only other broad survey text that I know of is Marie Banich's book on the related area of Cognitive Neuropsychology.

Editorial Review:

Written by leading researchers in the field, Cognitive Neuroscience: The Biology of the Mind shows how the complex processes of the mind--language, memory, attention, feelings--are enabled by the underlying biology of the brain. Relying on patient studies and case histories rather than lab experiments on animals, the authors explore the underlying neurological chemistry behind critical human diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and suggests various treatments. A series of interviews with other researchers bring the science to life as they discuss their pathbreaking discoveries and speculate about new frontiers for the discipline.

Not a good book, anyone who is interested in behaviorism and conditioning should purchase John & Janice Baldwin's book 'Behavior Principles in Everyday Life.' John and Janice are excellent authors and their work is very descriptive and easy to understand.

Look elsewhere for concise information without the wordiness 1 out of 5 stars.

For those individuals who have a passion for cognitive psychology and its technical language, this is the book for you. As for the remainder, look elsewhere if you want an introductory text or if you desire concrete examples related to theoretical assertions. This text is intended for those who possess in-depth knowledge of cognitive functions and experimentation and excludes background information.

Editorial Review:

Michael Domjan, one of the top researchers in his field, presents a concise, current book of the principles of conditioning and learning, perfect for professors and students alike who want an accurate and detailed account of learning and conditioning - the "essentials" - without excessive research and detail.

Editorial Review:

For managers, coaching for performance and for emotional intelligence are two different things. But that doesn’t mean they exist in different worlds. Performance is just one part of an employee’s overall development as a professional and as a leader -- development which depends on the employee’s emotional intelligence and the ability of the manager to encourage and increase it.

Coaching for Emotional Intelligence provides a carefully planned strategy to help managers address such factors as personality traits, communications styles, and personal behaviors -- the delicate issues that make coaching for EI more challenging than coaching for performance alone.

The book will help readers feel confident and comfortable with sensitive, often personal issues that arise in managing and developing subordinates, and will accelerate the development of high-potential employees and future leaders. Logical, applicable, and realistic, Coaching for Emotional Intelligence makes this often elusive subject simple to grasp -- and easy to nurture in any workplace.
