the award was received posthumously.... 5 out of 5 stars.

A fool and his life can be quickly parted. Since 1993, Wendy Northcutt has memorialized hundreds of anonymous idiots with her Darwin Awards. If you go to her website at www.DarwinAwards.com you can see the criteria that she uses for honoring these unfortunates.

This latest offering is morbidly entertaining. How many ways can a person die? How many ways can a person die as the result of a stupid, self-inflicted accident? Apparently, the possibilities are endless.

This is a very funny book in a very sick way. There's something hilarious about these ridiculous demises and tragic maimings. I'm not sure what it is? It's not ghoulish, just foolish.

There, but for the grace of a slightly higher IQ (I hope), go I.

Editorial Review:

Evolution takes a giant step forward with the fifth edition of the New York Times bestselling phenomenon.

The human race’s most popular humor series returns with a new collection of macabre mishaps and misadventures. Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves from it, The Darwin Awards Next Evolution shows how uncommon common sense still is.

Shakti Gawain already knows The Secret 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Recently I picked up my copy of Creative Visualization and noted that I had written four big goals in March 2003 onto pages in the back of the book. By October 2004, I realized that three of the four goals were already complete and the fourth is still ongoing. I was so impressed with this that I have written two more big goals into the back of the book and I will order her Creative Visualization Workbook to enhance this experience. I don't know how it works, nor, according to Gawain, do we have to know -- just let the Universe manifest the details ... and it does. Easy to read; easy to understand. Shakti Gawain teaches, like the Buddha, with an "open hand" and no "secrets" held back.

Life Changing in a Profound & Positive Way 5 out of 5 stars.

You will certainly gain something significant from this book if you have an open mind. It has truly and profoundly changed my life in incredibly positive ways, and with instant results. I am definitely going to share ideas from this book with the class I teach on overcoming self-doubt and increasing self-confidence and compassion. I thank Shakti for sharing these illuminating ideas.

Although I certainly haven't yet mastered the techniques, I now have tools that I can use to cultivate peace of mind, compassion, and inner happiness.

Editorial Review:

A woman planning a dinner party calls a gourmet caterer and learns that "Chateaubriand" can be ordered. To which she responds, "No, thanks. We're going to take care of the wine ourselves." The dead silence at the end of the phone is her first clue that something is amiss. A CEO attempts to put an end to complaints from employees about the demeaning behavior of certain managers by berating the managers before the staff--thus reinforcing the very behavior he's trying to correct.

We often criticize such incidents with remarks like "How dumb!" or "What was he thinking?" But psychologist Madeleine L. Van Hecke argues that much of what we label stupidity can better be explained as blind spots. Just as the blind spot in the driver's side mirror can swallow up a passing car, patterns in the way we think can likewise become blind spots, sifting out information and observations that to other people seem obvious. Drawing on research in creativity, cognitive psychology, critical thinking, child development, education, and philosophy, Dr. Van Hecke shows how our assets as thinkers create the very blind spots that become our worst liabilities. She devotes a chapter to each of ten mental blind spots that afflict even the smartest people: not stopping to think, jumping to conclusions, my-side bias, getting trapped by categories, and much more. At the end of each chapter she offers tactics for overcoming that specific blind spot, so we can become more creative and competent thinkers.

Full of funny, poignant stories about human foibles, Blind Spots offers many insights for improving our social and political lives while giving us fresh slants into the minds of people who are poles apart from ourselves.

Practice, Practice, Practice 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Like all memory technques the authors stress association for memory improvement which is a good exercise to help remember things. In order for it to be effective it has to be practiced which can become a chore and why most people fail because they don't do it. I think Kevin Trudeau may have a more simple and effective method which is along the same lines as these authors. I know some people may have unfavorably thoughts about Trudeau but I thought his memory courses were good and helped me some. And you can get them at your local library as you can with this book. I chose to buy this book it because I want it handy as reference material.

Editorial Review:

Do you want to stop forgetting appointments, birthdays, and other important dates? Work more efficiently at your job? Study less and get better grades? Remember the names and faces of people you meet? The good news is that it's all possible. Your Memory will help to expand your memory abilities beyond what you thought possible. Dr. Higbee reveals how simple techniques, like the Link, Loci, Peg, and Phonetic systems, can be incorporated into your everyday life and how you can also use these techniques to learn foreign languages faster than you thought possible, remember details you would have otherwise forgotten, and overcome general absentmindedness. Higbee also includes sections on aging and memory and the latest information on the use of mnemonics.

The Six Thinking Hats 3 out of 5 stars.

Edward De Bono's Six Thinking Hats is a quick read.
I thought it was redundant and could have been half
as long. I Was bored at times. De Bono's Six Hat Method
was intentionally designed to be simple. that is the beauty of it.
The six thinking hats can very easilily be applied to a meeting
in order to really get things moving and that is extremely valuable.
i believe people should read this book, not because its a good book,
but because what De Bono demonstrates is a very powerful toolway tool.

Teaches the Left Brain and Right Crossover! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Six Thinking Hats is an easy to learn and apply, but powerful method to group decision making. Edward De Bono's common sense approach is both refreshing and insightful.

The Six Thinking Hats helps people use both their left and right brains efficiently by separating them into compartments (Thinking Hats). In other words, De Bono teaches how to achieve a strong Left Brain, Right Brain Crossover.

Each of the hats uses part of the left, or the right brain.
* The White Hat addresses facts and data -Left Brain
* The Red Hat addresses emotions - Right Brain
* The Black Hat addresses the weaknesses in ideas- Left Brain
* The Yellow Hat is hopeful and positive - Right Brain
* The Green Hat addresses creativity -Right Brain
* The Blue Hat is concerned with control -Left Brain

By separating thought patterns into compartments De Bono argues convincingly it is easier to come to rational conclusions for solving problems based on all aspects of the brain. In the Conclusion of the book he states:

"The biggest enemy of thinking is complexity, for that leads to confusion. When thinking is clear and simple, it becomes more enjoyable and more effective. The Six Thinking Hats concept is very simple to understand. It is also very simple to use."

Overall a fascinating and useful thinking tool for solving problems!

Editorial Review:

Michael Gelb's How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci is an inspiring and inventive guide that teaches readers how to develop their full potential, using the principles of Da Vincian thought identified by the author.

Beginning with a brief historical biography of Da Vinci and an overview of the astounding advances made in the arts and sciences during the Renaissance, Gelb illustrates the seven fundamental elements of Da Vinci's thought process:
Questionare: A questing, insatiably curious approach to life Dimostrazione: A commitment to test knowledge through experience Sensazione: The continual refinement of the senses, especially sight, as the means to clarify experience Sfumato: A willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox and uncertainty Arte/Scienza: The development of the balance between science and art, logic and imagination. "Whole-brain" thinking Corporalita: The cultivation of ambidexterity, fitness and poise Connessione: A recognition and appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and phenomena. "Systems" thinking.

Loaded with practical exercises, quotes, sidebars, illustrations and material drawn directly from Da Vinci's personal notebooks, How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci is both a tribute to his great achievements and a call to carry on his legacy in our everyday lives by utilizing our potential to the best of our ability.

Practical Techniques to Boost Creativity 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Author Michael Michalko delivers his best performance to date in this book. The book is filled with information on, and techniques for using, our creative processes. Many of the techniques are easy to learn, requiring only a little bit of practice to get used to them. Most of the book centers around: helping an individual generate many possible ideas about something, which will be critically evaluated at a later time; visualizing the problem and potential solutions; seeing from another's perspective, even the problem's in one case (quite effective sometimes); collaboration and creativity. This book already helped me deliver a 5 star essay on a very controversial subject. I followed its advice, producing as many ideas as possible in a short time, without rejecting any at first. Also, visualizing the data, as recommended, formed the basis for my later outline, which was complete enough that a rough draft was no work at all. So, for me, buying this book paid off already. I think anyone buying this will read it for a few minutes and then recognize they have a winner in their hands.

Editorial Review:

What exactly is creativity? Why do some people seem to have so much of it? Can their secrets be learned? In this trail-blazing book, internationally renowned business creativity expert Michael Michalko answers these questions and more, bringing life-changing techniques into everyone's reach. Michalko has researched and analyzed over 100 of history's greatest thinkers-from Leonardo da Vinci to Charles Darwin, Thomas Edison to Walt Disney-to show readers how creative people think and how to put their secrets to use. It's no wonder that Entrepreneur magazine lauded CRACKING CREATIVITY as "Required reading for anyone in business." Packed with practical exercises and strategies for stimulating creativity, this original book will literally revolutionize the way you think and open up a world of innovative solutions to challenges that you face every day.

If you are curious about how connected the brain, body and mind are without all the scientific and clinical gargon this book is it. Dr. Damasio has researched the workings of the frontal area of the brain for over 30 years and the talent to explain it well, plain and simple. Beware, this book will possibly enhance interest and knowledge of the brain to impress in casual conversations. The brain continues mystify researchers and scientist. A very good read.

Wonderful Intro to Cognitive Neuroscience. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book served as my introduction to the world of cognitive neuroscience. Written in a hybrid story-explanation form unique to Damasio, this book shows how much is known about how our mind operates and how we know it. As indicated in the title, it also describes a more realistic view of mental processes than the old model, suggested by Descartes, that separated emotion and reason -a model that we must let go of if we want to comprehend ourselves.

Editorial Review:

Linking the process of rational decision making to emotions, an award-winning scientist who has done extensive research with brain-damaged patients notes the dependence of thought processes on feelings and the body's survival-oriented regulators. 50,000 first printing.

Editorial Review:

From the inventor of the PalmPilot comes a new and compelling theory of intelligence, brain function, and the future of intelligent machines

Jeff Hawkins, the man who created the PalmPilot, Treo smart phone, and other handheld devices, has reshaped our relationship to computers. Now he stands ready to revolutionize both neuroscience and computing in one stroke, with a new understanding of intelligence itself.

Hawkins develops a powerful theory of how the human brain works, explaining why computers are not intelligent and how, based on this new theory, we can finally build intelligent machines.

The brain is not a computer, but a memory system that stores experiences in a way that reflects the true structure of the world, remembering sequences of events and their nested relationships and making predictions based on those memories. It is this memory-prediction system that forms the basis of intelligence, perception, creativity, and even consciousness.

In an engaging style that will captivate audiences from the merely curious to the professional scientist, Hawkins shows how a clear understanding of how the brain works will make it possible for us to build intelligent machines, in silicon, that will exceed our human ability in surprising ways.

Written with acclaimed science writer Sandra Blakeslee, On Intelligence promises to completely transfigure the possibilities of the technology age. It is a landmark book in its scope and clarity.
