Editorial Review:

Recreative Minds develops a philosophical theory of imagination that draws upon the latest work in psychology. This theory illuminates the use of imagination in coming to terms with art, its role in enabling us to live as social beings, and the psychological consequences of disordered imagination. The authors offer a lucid exploration of a fascinating subject.

Editorial Review:

The Decolonization of the Imagination paves the way for a truly global cultural politics. A distinguished cast of contributors, from both North and South, looks at the relations between culture and power, domination and the imagination in a variety of contexts.Part one explores colonial imaginaries by unpacking the imageries and discourses of domination – from the nineteenth century to contemporary Western images of the Middle East. Part two analyses imaginaries of cultural pluralism from the frontiers of the colonial past to contemporary Californian ‘culture wars’. Part three assesses the impact of globalization on decolonizing processes. The book rejects both Eurocentrism and other forms of Western ethnocentrism as well as questioning third world cultural nationalism as a form of resistance to imperialism. A new perspective is offered, which looks beyond polycentrism towards the normalization of cultural pluralism, and a post-coloniality that transcends old North/South boundaries.

Editorial Review:

The chapters in this book all appeared originally in the European Journal for High Ability, reprinted here to expose them to a North American readership. They cover basic concepts in the study of giftedness, cognition and problem solving, musical talent and counseling. The authors come from a dozen different countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, France, Italy, and Sweden. Also represented are nations such as Russia, Poland, and Hungary, which have just emerged from a period of domination of ideas by a socio-political tradition known to North Americans only in the abstract.

Editorial Review:

...providing a clearly written discussion of the published literature plus an account of previously unpublished research by the author and his collaborators...

For psychometricians concerned with the measurement of individual differences in thought imagery, evidence is presented in support of three relatively independent dimensions. For developmental psychologists a basis is provided from which a more detailed investigation of imagery differences and their origins can be undertaken. Psychophysiologists will find the power of thought imagery to influence physiological processes is convincingly demonstrated.

For cognitive psychologists the necessity of incorporating consciously imaged events into their current theories can no longer be ignored; imagery is not merely a byproduct of other cognitive processes but an influential variable in its own right. Social psychologists will find a whole new field has opened up in which differences in imaging can be shown to affect many of the processes in which they are interested. Finally, for practitioners who would like to be assured that a firm theoretical and empirical foundation exists for the use of imagery procedures the existing evidence is encouraging.

Overall, this book contains innumerable suggestions for further research and how it can be conducted. Individual Differences in Imaging is essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the nature and functions of mental imagery.
