A Book and Deck of Inspiration 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I buy books for one purpose. I want to be inspired. Inspired by the knowledge, wisdom, exploration, talent and sheer delight of what others are doing and have done. This book is full of inspiration. If you don't find inspiration in the book (and I know you will) you will be nearly pushed to your creative space by the force of ideas you will gain from the innovative and brilliantly designed deck of creativity prompts. There is nothing else like it, but then there are few others like the talented author, Ms. Stroud.

Editorial Review:

The Artist’s Muse: Unlock the Door to Your Creativity is one of the most innovative ideas and concepts about painting on the market. Its contents are dual, for it contains a treasure trove --exceptional articles on creativity accompanied by creative painting challenges, and in addition, the kit contains a creative card game, which will show artists, fledgling or experienced exciting and different ways to express themselves by approaching their subjects "Out of the box." All in all, this package will inspire, provoke, and educate because it presents literally thousands of ways to create individual paintings. And, it combines traditional wisdom and modern approaches from some of the top watermedia artists in America. It’s a winner.

Editorial Review:

For more than fifty years Milton Glaser has designed much of the world we experience every day. His posters, books, albums, restaurants, advertisements, and so much more have made him the preeminent force in design in America. Drawing upon an amazing vocabulary of images and techniques, Glaser has now created his most personal book.

Based on his view that all art has its origin in the impulse to create--primarily through drawing--he has designed a book that powerfully delineates this idea. In Drawing is Thinking, the drawings depicted are meant to be experienced sequentially, so that the viewer not only follows Glaser through these pages, but comes to inhabit his mind. The drawings represent a range of subject matter taken from throughout Glaser's career. They illustrate the author's commitment to the fundamental idea that drawing is not simply a way to represent reality, but a way to understand and experience the world.

Glaser's two signature books, Graphic Design and Art is Work, both published by Overlook, are still in print decades after their first appearance. Each displays his work with short descriptions of how the work came about. But in Drawing is Thinking, the author is less interested in display and more concerned with how the mind works to visually represent reality.

Editorial Review:

“All it takes to become an artist is to start doing art.”
–from On Becoming an Artist

On Becoming an Artist is loaded with good news. Backed by her landmark scientific work on mindfulness and artistic nature, bestselling author and Harvard psychologist Ellen J. Langer shows us that creativity is not a rare gift that only some special few are born with, but rather an integral part of everyone’s makeup. All of us can express our creative impulses– authentically and uniquely–and, in the process, enrich our lives.

Why then do so many of us merely dream of someday painting, someday writing, someday making music? Why do we think the same old thoughts, harbor the same old prejudices, stay stuck in the same old mud? Who taught us to think “inside the box”?

No one is more qualified to answer these questions than Dr. Langer, who has explored their every facet for years. She describes dozens of fascinating experiments–her own and those of her colleagues–that are designed to study mindfulness and its relation to human creativity, and she shares the profound implications of the results–for our well-being, health, and happiness.

Langer reveals myriad insights, among them: We think we should already know what only firsthand experience can teach us. . . . In learning the ways that all roses are alike, we risk becoming blind to their differences. . . . If we are mindfully creative, the circumstances of the moment will tell us what to do. . . . Those of us who are less evaluatively inclined experience less guilt, less regret, less blame, and tend to like ourselves more. . . . Uncertainty gives us the freedom to discover meaning. . . . Finally, what we think we’re sure of may not even exist.

With the skill of a gifted logician, Langer demonstrates exactly how we undervalue ourselves and undermine our creativity. By example, she persuades us to have faith in our creative works, not because someone else approves of them but because they’re a true expression of ourselves. Her high-spirited, challenging book sparkles with wit and intelligence and inspires in us an infectious enthusiasm for our creations, our world, and ourselves. It can be of lifelong value to everyone who reads it.

A "must" read in one's life and quest 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I'm very touched to find this book again as i browsed through the net, 25 years after i first bought it in a flee market in New York. The essay by Henry Miller, literally blew my young artist mind back then. It inspired me to follow on his crazy steps. I quit my civil service job(without official leave) and went to Paris ,where I lived for ten years. I read and re-read that essay on creativity and it just kept giving me the courage to step further into the unknown, thus changing my life completely.

Timeless Insights Into the Nature of Creativity 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Like a previous reviewer, I read this book when it was simply "The Creative Process". I was just a kid and bought the paperback version when they were much less expensive. I still have it and it is falling apart now. It is a book to keep. A previous reviewer mentioned his (her?) favorite parts. I can only add mine to that list: Mozart describing the "completeness" of his musical idea; Thomas Wolfe's "Story of a Novel" in which the writing of a novel is as gripping as the novel itself; R. W. Gerard, whose "Biological Basis of Imagination" breaks down the barriers between Gestalt Psychology, Biology, and esthetics; the concreteness of Stephen Spender's poetry; glimpses into the tactile imagination of Henry Moore; Max Ernst on the art of the collage. Lots of content in a small package.

Editorial Review:

This unique anthology brings together material from 38 well-known writers, artists, and scientists who attempt to describe the process by which original ideas come to them. Contributors include Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Amy Lowell, Rudyard Kipling, Max Ernst, Katherine Anne Porter, Henry Miller, Carl Gustav Jung, Mary Wigman, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Henri Poincar and many others.

Narcissistic 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Letters to a Young Artist is not worth reading. Anna Deavere Smith is a gifted artist herself, but her book springs from the assumption that she has profound wisdom to bestow. Her narcissism was disappointing because I have great respect for her as a performer.

Bedside Reading 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Anna Deavere Smith knows what it's like--the struggle of the artist, the cold night of the soul when sometimes you feel punished for being a visionary, and she gets a lot of it down on paaper in this book of letters modelled to a certain degree on Rilke's famous LETTERS TO A YOUNG POET. She's seen it all in her multi-tasking career, and if she doesn't know it, she has a host of excellent friends to ask, everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Paul Van De Carr. James Baldwin, whom she met when she was just a struggling actor, told someone that she reminded him of "Lorraine" (Hansberry, the playwright who wrote A RAISIN IN THE SUN) and this overheard compliment sustained Anna Deavere Smith through many a disheartening audition. She's been on THE WEST WING and she played the mother in the movie of RENT. It's a bedside book you might give to any young friends you might have, or hope to influence. They'll read a few passages and take heart.

It gets docked one star for its relentless name dropping. We know she's at the very top of the tree, but she doesn't miss a beat about talking about famous friends, or people she's met in the publis sphere, and some of her enthusiasms get a little embarrassing. Did she have to tell us that Lauren Hutton should win Kennedy Center honors for her smile? That's the kind of thing Louella Parsons used to say, and it didn't sound any more sincere the first time around. And her inability to say a negative thing about any of her friends grows tiresome, especially when she says that "Naomi Campbell has presence" or brags that Condoleeza Rice came to one of her performances when they were colleagues at Stanford. Please, ADS, draw a line somewhere!

Though to be fair she does spoof her own propensity for the spotlight. She's not without humor, it's just a little weird to be writing a whole book of letters to an imaginary young girl, or is it? I think the scheme helps her incorporate different journalistic assignments she's been given over the years. For example, the imaginary teen is supposed to be a painter, so ADS gives an account of interviewing Brice Marden, "and just like you guessed, he is indeed tremendously sexy." Such double dips are a commonplace in occasional books of this kind, but we expected a little bit more from the genius who gave us TWILIGHT LOS ANGELES and FIRES IN THE MIRROR.

Editorial Review:

From the most exciting individual in American theater” (Newsweek), here is Anna Deavere Smith’s brass tacks advice to aspiring artists of all stripes. In vividly anecdotal letters to the young BZ, she addresses the full spectrum of issues that people starting out will face: from questions of confidence, discipline, and self-esteem, to fame, failure, and fear, to staying healthy, presenting yourself effectively, building a diverse social and professional network, and using your art to promote social change. At once inspiring and no-nonsense, Letters to a Young Artist will challenge you, motivate you, and set you on a course to pursue your art without compromise.

Disappointed at first, now I love it! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I heard about this book from Teesha Moore's blog, where she raved about it. For the first chapter or two, I was disappointed. Hardly any artistic "how-to" information, and a lot of what seemed to be whining. (The book was written shortly after her father passed away, and her marriage of 30 years ended in divorce. I understood that she was going through a tough time, but..)

About chapter 3 or 4, the book began to grow on me. Still not any "how-tos", just a few brief suggestions here and there. That's fine with me, I'm not reading for instruction, I'm more interested in being entertained. Her writing certainly fills that bill! Excellent stuff!

Positive Thinking About Creativity with a Biblical Metaphor 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Summary: The Creative Life captures many valuable dimensions of improving creativity. The book's metaphor to the seven days of creation in Genesis will excite much controversy among those who read this material differently that will detract from a focus on improving human creativity. The book's basic message is that God creates the potential for all things to exist, but many of them require co-creation by people to come into physical existence. " . . . [Y]ou are no less creative than God Himself."

Review: The book is built around the metaphor of the seven days of creation in Genesis. The basic reading of that part of the Bible is also done in a literary rather than a literal way. Each chapter builds around one day of creation, and ties the lessons back to human creativity. Many helpful submetaphors are contained in each chapter, such as to the combining of minds on the Internet.

"Like God, our creative powers are infinite," says Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo in his introduction. The book isn't quite that strong. It basically argues that the unfilled potential that God has created can all be tapped by humans.

"Let There Be Light." This text is seen as an encouragement to look for inner illumination for the right path. "Love . . . is what we are." "Love is the awareness of light and you naturally project light in a kind of healing influence."

"Let There Be Firmament." "To the person with an unshakeable faith that something wonderful is going to happen, something wonderful is happening." You have to believe in the potential before your mind can take it seriously.

"Let the Dry Land Appear." " . . . [T]he dry land is the mental image of formed thoughts." You need to "see what can be." You are encouraged to create visionary views of what could be in practical detail. I thought that this section worked best of all those in the book.

"Let There Be Two Great Lights." "God can only will the full expression of your powers and capacities." This argument seems convoluted, rather than expressive to me. God can do anything. Any existing limits in humans can be changed by God.

I suspect that many readers, if they are like me, will find this book coming close to arguing that each human's relationship to God is closer to being a peer one than many believe. Sections like this one create that issue. I found all this exhaltation of humans relative to God to be unnecessary to improving personal creativity. The language quoted in this book from the New Testament rightly emphasizes that Jesus pointed out that His ways are open to us.

The best parts of the book are the submetaphors. For example, in coming into contact with your on intuition, you are encouraged to think about the light within as being able to be influenced by a rheostat or a radio tuner. Then, there are exercises to use those metaphors to inspire more creativity. Based on my work with hypnosis and creativity, these are exceptionally fine metaphors and superb directions for using them.

If you find the Genesis metaphor gets in your way (as I suspect it will for many), my suggestion is that you skip over those parts when you get to them. You will still find much solid information here about being more creative. For example, the material in the chapter on "Let the Dry Land Appear" is very similar to that in Think and Grow Rich, and will provide new perspective on those ideas for people who have enjoyed that fine book.

The exercises in each chapter are well worth doing, and you would get almost all of the benefit possible from this book if you simply did them. So if you read the book, be sure to take the time to do the exercises.

A fundamental flaw in the book is to act as though the reader lacks basic experience in being creative. In fact, almost everyone has been very creative many times in her or his life. The material here would have been much more helpful if it had built more on those successful experiences.

After you finish the book, think back to those times when you have been most creative. What did they have in common? Do you routinely try to recreate those circumstances? How can the elements that worked well be combined in new ways?

Aspire to perfection in some important area . . . and you may approach it closer than anyone has ever done before! Be sure to leave a map to follow your journey though, when you take that route.

Editorial Review:

Eric Butterworth, a seminal force in the New Thought movement, is the author of fourteen enormously successful books, including Discover the Power Within You. In The Creative Life, his first major new book in eight years, Butterworth uniquely explores the creative process by identifying the seven keys to release our hidden genius.

Depends on what you're looking for... 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I teach composition at a mid-sized Catholic university in the mid-Atlantic region and used this as my course text last semester (the department's choice, not mine) with decidedly mixed results. If you want your students to get beyond "mere rhetoric" and into critical analysis, this NOT the text you should be using. Most of the examples quoted are taken from newspaper editorials, which are notoriously one-sided and don't exactly encourage the reader to give the opposition's view a fair shot, and the last half is a handbook (useful if you don't want your students to have to purchase more than one book, but frustrating if you'd rather see those pages devoted to substantive material on teaching composition). If you like the argument/debate model of writing instruction (I don't), this will probably work out better for you than it did for me. I must also note that most of my students found the book's tone patronizing.

Editorial Review:

This book uses logos, pathos, and ethos in critical thinking, active reading, and persuasive writing. Accessible and stimulating, the versatile manual can be used as a rhetoric, a reader, a guide on research writing, and a guide on style. Through its chapters, users learn to excel at what they say; through our style interchapters users earn to excel at how they say it. Cheating, conservation, race, politics, male/female communication styles, gun control, abortion, same-sex marriage, stem cell research – many diverse and mature readings on these subjects engage readers and writers in analytical thinking and stimulate them to react with thoughtful discussions and compositions. For individuals who want to communicate clearly, argue persuasively, and analyze and evaluate what they read.
