This book was challenging but well worth the effort. Ainslie's theory of choice and of self-control/ will-power was, like nothing I have come across, and I have been a pretty avid reader on the topic for a long time. The book takes a basic finding from animal behavior experiments and from it, manages to build an extremely intriguing and sweeping account of motivations extending to some really complex topics (including Freudian/psychodynamic defences). I only wish it was not out of print!
Editorial Review:
Examines an elementary human paradox: that we are endangered by our own wishes. Even though this observation is ancient and confirmed by wide experience, none of the disciplines that deal with decision-making have examined it.
