Editorial Review:

Babies need it, parents want it-- the call for a good night’s sleep has parents everywhere looking for a solution like this: an easy-to-follow plan from a renowned baby sleep specialist that delivers on the promise of its title.

There is no bigger issue for healthy infants than sleeping through the night. In this simple, straightforward book, Suzy Giordano presents her amazingly effective "Limited- Crying Solution" that will get any baby to sleep for twelve hours at night—and three hours in the day—by the age of twelve weeks old.

Giordano is the mother of five children and one of the most sought-after baby sleep specialists in the country. The Washington Post calls her a baby sleep "guru" and "an underground legend in the Washington area for her ability to teach newborns how to achieve that parenting nirvana: sleeping through the night." Her sleep plan has been tested with singletons, twins, triplets, babies with special needs, and colicky babies—and it has never failed.

Whether you are pregnant, first-time parents, or parents who seek a different path with your second or third child, anyone can benefit from the Baby Coach’s popular system of regular feeding times, twelve hours of sleep at night and three hours of sleep during the day, and the peace of mind that comes with taking the parent and child out of a sleep- deprived world.

Editorial Review:

Imagine a product that increases alertness, boosts creativity, reduces stress, improves perception, stamina, motor skills, and accuracy, enhances your sex life, helps you make better decisions, keeps you looking younger, aids in weight loss, reduces the risk of heart attack, elevates your mood, and strengthens memory. Now imagine that this product is nontoxic, has no dangerous side effects, and, best of all, is absolutely free.

This miracle drug is, in fact, nothing more than the nap: the right nap at the right time. The work of Sara C. Mednick, Ph.D., a researcher at the Salk Institute and the leading authority on the study of the nap, Take a Nap! Change Your Life. is the scientifically-based breakthrough program that shows how we can fight the fatigue epidemic—which afflicts an estimated 50 million Americans—through a custom-designed nap. Take a Nap! Change Your Life. explains the five stages of the sleep cycle, particularly Stage Two, Slow Wave Sleep, and REM, and the benefits each one provides; how to assess your tiredness and set up a personal sleep profile; and how to neutralize the voice in your head that tells you napping is a sign of laziness. (Not that anyone would have called JFK, Churchill, Einstein, or Napoleon a slug-a-bed.) Using the unique Nap Wheel on the cover and interior graphs and charts, it shows us exactly when our optimum napping time is, and exactly how long we should try to sleep—even how it’s possible to design a nap to inspire creativity one day, and the next day design one to help us with our memory. There are tips on how to create the right nap environment, a 16-step technique for falling asleep, a six-week napping workbook, and more.

Editorial Review:

A renowned pediatrician explains her revolutionary new method for training infants to sleep right . . . from the start Dr. Cathryn Tobin, pediatrician of 25 years, midwife, and mother of four, reveals a breakthrough discovery that will transform the way that parents put their infants and toddlers to bed. Dr. Tobin has found that a physiological window of opportunity opens—usually at 6 to 8 weeks—when a baby can learn great sleep habits before bad ones develop. If parents follow her 7-day plan and take advantage of this crucial time in child development, they and their newborn will be sleeping through the night sooner than any other sleep book promises . . . and without the crying and screaming that comes with other approaches.
This is the first sleep manual that focuses on preventing infant sleep problems before they have a chance to begin. But if a parent has missed the window, there’s still hope and HELP: Dr. Tobin’s no-cry program for re-training older babies and toddlers. Dr. Tobin developed this program after sleep deprivation caused a car accident that almost cost her life. Since then she has successfully used her method with hundreds of grateful parents.

Strongly recommended for readers suffering from sleep disorders 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Healing Night: The Science and Spirit of Sleeping, Dreaming, and Awakening, authored by sleep and dream medicine specialist Rubin R. Naiman (Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona's Program in Integrative Medicine), provides the reader with theoretical, historical, and psychological understandings of dreams, including a multitude of strategies and innovative ideas for assisting, conditioning, treating or growing beyond sleep disorders. Introducing readers to diverse conceptual explorations of dreaming and dream sciences drawn from a variety of perceptive interpretations and over twenty-five years of medical dream-oriented experience, Professor Naiman enables the reader to arrive at a concise and highly acute understanding of dreams in spiritual, scientific, and medical ideologies. Healing Night is very strongly recommended for readers suffering from sleep disorders, as well as students of the dream-sciences and psychology, and those searching for tools to evaluate dream interpretation utilizing perspectives from philosophical, literary, mythological, and modern psychological sciences.

Editorial Review:

In Healing Night, clinical psychologist Rubin R. Naiman explores sleeping, dreaming, and awakening, going far beyond the science of sleep medicine to reflect on what he believes is the profoundly spiritual nature of night consciousness. Naiman reveals how the erosion of night by artificial light and the devaluation of sleep and dreaming have led to an epidemic of sleep disorders and consequent days of chronically dazed waking consciousness. Drawing on both clinical experience and personal explorations, Naiman offers a fresh look at sleep and dreams, and provides alternative healing practices for sleep disturbances. Moreover, he challenges us to acknowledge our spiritual night blindness and embrace the sacredness of night.

Pediatrician: I recommend it to all 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book to all my parents starting at 1mo. Since doing this routinely I have noticed many more sleeping babies and parents with much less intervention from me. I talk about sleep a lot, but now I dont have to as much! Teaching a baby sleep independence is a vital developmental task (most parents dont realize this), most new parents wait WAY too long, and somehow expect the baby to "do it when they are ready." Waiting until 12mo old is a guarantee of having to "cry it out", and that is OK if necessary, but starting younger will avoid this. I have scores and scores of happy parents from all walks of life who are thrilled with their 6mo old, and the baby is MUCH happier too. You are doing this for your baby, not so much for yourself, children need to sleep longer to function during the day. A 10 mo old who is getting up every 2-3 hours is barely able to function during the day (let alone the mom, especially behind the wheel). Get this book early and think about it and discuss with your partner, you wont be disappointed. BTW, it is much easier to read than the popular "Healthy Sleep Habits" book, which could use a good editor.

Editorial Review:

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting.

Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems.

Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.

Quick tips for busy (and tired) moms and dads 5 out of 5 stars.

Kim West has done it again. Good Night, Sleep Tight was like lifesaver for me when it came out, and 52 Sleep Secrets for Babies is wonderful in different ways. Kim West's method is so gentle and loving, and works for people who cannot take the crying methods. With Baby #3 in our house, sometimes I feel like I should know this stuff from all of the time I spent with the first book, but flipping through the "sleep secrets" is a great refresher course, and just a good reminder, in general, about how important sleep is for ALL of us. I gave a copy to a friend who has an infant and she was so grateful. I love that I can pick it up and read a few tips at a time. Great format, great tips!

Editorial Review:

A little over 11,000 babies are born every day in the United States. Their parents prepare the room, buy all the equipment and diapers, go to birthing classes, find a pediatrician and anxiously await their arrival. Rarely do these parents have any preparation for the sleep deprivation before them. Kim West, author of "Good Night, Sleep Tight" and nationally known as "The SleepLady (tm)" has written 52 Sleep Secrets for Babies" to help new parents learn what they need to do to get their babies - and themselves - the sleep they need.

Many Ideas That Work 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Idiot's Guide to Sleep Training For Your Child by Melissa M. Burnham, Ph.D., and Jennifer Lawler, Ph.D. is well worth buying. Dr. Burnham is an Early Childhood Education and the book is highly acclaimed by Dr. Judith Owens, director of a Childhood Sleep Disorders Clinic. Using the unusual approach of considering all the options thoughtfully and with great insight, the authors discuss the pros and cons of every method of helping your child sleep through the night naturally. Of course, every parent is aware there are many different "experts" who tout different methods, and these guides come and go almost as fads, but this book discusses each and how and when it might be useful, while stressing the importance of selecting one method that works for the parents' philosophy and the household and then sticking to it so as not to confuse the baby or young child. There is also a special section dealing with special needs children and a section on using Yoga, Massage, and other physical techniques. The book is organized with easy to find selections that are pertinent to each situation and Melissa's own note about each method is highlighted. The book is excellent and would make one of the best possible new baby gifts

it really works! 5 out of 5 stars.

eduard estivill is a spanish pediatrician, very famous in europe for his dedication to parents' good night sleep. this book really does work! don't be afraid and give it a try for 1 week; it might be hard but magically after few nights you will realize how golden these advices are.
my son slept through the night from he was 6-week-old and he never ever had any sleep problem ever since (he's 4 and a half now).

Not useful- don't waste your time or money 1 out of 5 stars.

As a parent of a post-colic, breast-fed, 5 month old boy, I welcomed this inexpensive, easy read with a simple plan. The approach was oversimplified and did not help our family. Perhaps it is better suited for a younger infant who may be more easily reconditioned. I would recommend reading Suzy Giardino's or Dr. Weissbluth's books instead. Good luck.

Editorial Review:

We spend more than 200,000 hours sleeping in a lifetime, the equivalent of more than 8,000 days. Yet research has only just begun to decode the mysteries behind what can go wrong. Here, Dr. Carlos H. Schenck, one of the most prominent sleep doctors and researchers in the country, takes us on an incredible journey into the mechanisms of sleep, and the spectrum of disorders that can occur when these mechanisms go bizarrely awry.

Dr. Schenck discusses the causes and treatments for common problems-insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and more. But what sets this book apart is the rare glimpse it offers into the cutting-edge science that he and others have pioneered in identifying, understanding, and explaining the realm of "parasomnias"-the mysterious, more extreme sleep disorders, such as dream enactment, sleep-related eating disorder, sexsomnia, sleepwalking, sleep terrors, sleep paralysis, and even sleep violence, which affect at least 20 million Americans.

Comprehensive, engrossing, and backed by the latest medical research, Sleep is a groundbreaking work about what continues to be one of our most mysterious medical puzzles-making it an indispensable guide for sufferers of all sleep disorders and their families.
