Finally!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Finally, a book about getting your child to sleep that offers realistic solutions to very common problems. Kurcinka's style is so conversational and so practical, you almost feel as if you're taking one of her parenting workshops. She doesn't blame or scold... simply put, she gets you to figure out what's important to your family, and then how to go about getting it. It's been almost a week since I reinstituted nap time for my almost 3-year-old (who'd given up naps a long time ago) and already she is sleeping much better at night. This from a child who visibly stiffens at the very mention of "nap" or "sleep" of any kind. I highly recommend this valuable book.

Editorial Review:

Does your child

  • Refuse to cooperate in the morning?
  • Get into trouble for not listening?
  • "Lose it" over seemingly insignificant issues?
  • Seem to resist sleep?

An estimated 69 percent of American infants, children, and teens are sleep deprived. Studies have shown that sleep deficits can contribute to hyperactivity, distraction, forgetfulness, learning problems, illness, accidents, and disruptive behaviors. Often what our misbehaving kids really need isn't more "consequences" or more medication but more sleep.

Sleepless in America offers weary and frustrated parents a helping hand and an exciting new approach to managing challenging behaviors by integrating research on stress, sleep, and temperament with practical strategies and a five-step approach that enables parents to help their "tired and wired" children get the sleep they so desperately need.

Editorial Review:

What is dreaming? Why are dreams so strange and why are they so hard to remember? In this fascinating book, Harvard researcher Allan Hobson offers an intriguing look at our nightly odyssey through the illusory world of dreams.
Hobson describes how the theory of dreaming has advanced dramatically over the past fifty years, sparked by the use of EEGs in the 1950s and by recent innovations in brain imaging. We have learned for instance that, in dreaming, some areas of the brain are very active--the visual and auditory centers, for instance--while others are completely shut down, including the centers for self-awareness, logic, and memory. Thus we can have visually vivid dreams, but be utterly unaware that the sequence of events or locales may be bizarre and, quite often, impossible. And because the memory center is inactive, we don't remember the dream at all, unless we wake up while it is in progress. Hobson also shows that modern research has disproved most of Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams (as one scientist put it, "Freud was 50% right and 100% wrong"), but we have gained new insight into the nature of mental illness. The book also discusses dream disorders (nightmares, night terrors, sleep walking), the possible link between dreaming and the regulation of body temperature, the effects of sleep deprivation, and much more.
With special boxed features that highlight intriguing questions--Do we dream in color? (yes), Do animals dream? (probably), Do men and women dream differently? (no)--Dreaming offers a cutting-edge account of the most mysterious area of our mental life.

It's working for us! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

After a disappointing 2 year check-up when our Doctor informed us that we needed to take away my son's bottle and let him cry it out in bed rather than rocking him to sleep, I was desperate for an option. I found this book and liked that is gives very specific, step by step instructions on exactly what to do at bedtime. I love her idea of relaxing stretches, deep breathing and using your imagination to go off to sleep on your own. You will actually teach your child how to fall asleep, instead of just leaving him to figure it out on his own. Brilliant and much kinder than that horrible Cry-it-out method. My son is 2 and we have adapted the book to fit his age and understanding, some of the ideas are a little old for him right now. But it does work! This is 6 weeks from starting the book and we now use the CD for the floppy game stretches and the story. I stay in the room to help with the stretches, but can walk away after the story and he will soon fall asleep, on his own, without me in the room! A huge change for us!! I can take a wide awake 2 yr old who doesn't want to go to sleep, lay him in his bed, use the CD and then leave him in his room awake and he will fall asleep on his own without crying!! That's worth more than gold to this Mama! (Getting him on a good consistent nap schedule has been important too - floppy game works for naps and bedtime!)

I just wanted to add that it is now almost a year later it is still working!! My son will be 3 at the beginning of July. He was never a good sleeper but now he can fall sleep on his own without us in the room! We have a bedtime routine of bath, read 3 stories (short board books), say a prayer, give hugs and kisses and then he climbs into bed and we play the floppy game with the cd. After the game ends, my husband and I leave the room and he listens to a story on the cd and falls asleep. My son is very happy and full of energy all the time so at bedtime he is still laughing and talking and jumping around when he gets into bed. But the floppy game relaxes him enough to start yawning and by the end of the story he's usually asleep. If not, and he calls us back, one of us will talk to him and he usually asks to hear the story again. If he hears the story a second time he is always asleep afterwards. We use it at nap time and bedtime. If he complains and says he doesn't want to go to bed or nap we just say Sorry but it's time for the floppy game and then start the CD right up. If he doesn't get quite right away we tell him he as to be quiet and listen to the lady so we will know what to do. He sleeps very well and even puts himself back to sleep on his own. Very rarely (maybe once every couple of months) he isn't able to go back to sleep on his own and calls us back to his room. All we have to do is talk to him a little and start the story for him and he's right back to sleep. This even worked once after a really bad dream. He woke screaming, cried in my arms for a couple of minutes. After we got him calmed and consoled, I asked if he wanted to lay down and hear the story again and he said yes and went right off to sleep. This book is a life saver for us and we will use it on our second son when he is old enough. I love the floppy game and tell parents about it all the time!

Editorial Review:

Patti Teel has created a revolutionary four-week program to help children ages 3-10 fall asleep on their own-and fall back asleep independently when they awaken during the night. "The Floppy Sleep Song" plus seven guided relaxations help parents customize a bedtime routine to send their child peacefully into a restful and rejuvenating sleep.

Pediatrician: I recommend it to all 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book to all my parents starting at 1mo. Since doing this routinely I have noticed many more sleeping babies and parents with much less intervention from me. I talk about sleep a lot, but now I dont have to as much! Teaching a baby sleep independence is a vital developmental task (most parents dont realize this), most new parents wait WAY too long, and somehow expect the baby to "do it when they are ready." Waiting until 12mo old is a guarantee of having to "cry it out", and that is OK if necessary, but starting younger will avoid this. I have scores and scores of happy parents from all walks of life who are thrilled with their 6mo old, and the baby is MUCH happier too. You are doing this for your baby, not so much for yourself, children need to sleep longer to function during the day. A 10 mo old who is getting up every 2-3 hours is barely able to function during the day (let alone the mom, especially behind the wheel). Get this book early and think about it and discuss with your partner, you wont be disappointed. BTW, it is much easier to read than the popular "Healthy Sleep Habits" book, which could use a good editor.

Editorial Review:

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting.

Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems.

Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.

it really works! 5 out of 5 stars.

eduard estivill is a spanish pediatrician, very famous in europe for his dedication to parents' good night sleep. this book really does work! don't be afraid and give it a try for 1 week; it might be hard but magically after few nights you will realize how golden these advices are.
my son slept through the night from he was 6-week-old and he never ever had any sleep problem ever since (he's 4 and a half now).

Not useful- don't waste your time or money 1 out of 5 stars.

As a parent of a post-colic, breast-fed, 5 month old boy, I welcomed this inexpensive, easy read with a simple plan. The approach was oversimplified and did not help our family. Perhaps it is better suited for a younger infant who may be more easily reconditioned. I would recommend reading Suzy Giardino's or Dr. Weissbluth's books instead. Good luck.

Many Ideas That Work 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Idiot's Guide to Sleep Training For Your Child by Melissa M. Burnham, Ph.D., and Jennifer Lawler, Ph.D. is well worth buying. Dr. Burnham is an Early Childhood Education and the book is highly acclaimed by Dr. Judith Owens, director of a Childhood Sleep Disorders Clinic. Using the unusual approach of considering all the options thoughtfully and with great insight, the authors discuss the pros and cons of every method of helping your child sleep through the night naturally. Of course, every parent is aware there are many different "experts" who tout different methods, and these guides come and go almost as fads, but this book discusses each and how and when it might be useful, while stressing the importance of selecting one method that works for the parents' philosophy and the household and then sticking to it so as not to confuse the baby or young child. There is also a special section dealing with special needs children and a section on using Yoga, Massage, and other physical techniques. The book is organized with easy to find selections that are pertinent to each situation and Melissa's own note about each method is highlighted. The book is excellent and would make one of the best possible new baby gifts

Another good one from Dr. Thompson 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson has released another CD collection of brainwave entrainment music. This one features brainwave frequencies combined with nature sounds. I particularly enjoyed "Beta - Awakened Rainforest" and "Theta - Meditative Stream".
I've found the Beta CD to be excellent for clearing out the cobwebs on these dark winter mornings. It really helps me to get myself going in the A.M.
The Theta CD is also very useful. I use it both for deepening self-hypnosis sessions and for unwinding before going to bed.
The Alpha and Delta CD's are very similar to past Thompson releases, which is the only reason I'm not giving this collection a full five stars.

Editorial Review:

"Why doesn't my baby sleep better?" weary parents ask. "How can we get more sleep?" There are as many answers to these questions as there are babies and families, says Dr Avi Sadeh in this helpful and reassuring (some may say indispensable) book. Based on his years of research with sleep-disturbed babies and their sleep-deprived parents, Dr Sadeh suggests a wide variety of practical solutions to babies' and young children's sleep problems. Other experts may recommend one strict approach to changing a baby's sleep habits, but a single remedy fails to take into account a baby's uniqueness and the dynamics of his or her family, Dr Sadeh contends. He helps parents first to understand the natural sleep patterns of babies, and then to consider their own family's situation and needs. In an accessible style designed to ease anxious parents' worries, Dr Sadeh describes the various sleep problems of early childhood, outlines treatment possibilities, and details the pros and cons of each of these choices. This book will appeal not only to sleepless parents seeking relief but also to those who are curious about the most recent findings in children's sleep research. Dr Sadeh addresses a full range of questions: What is the importance of sleep to a baby? How do babies in different cultures sleep? How is sleep related to development? What causes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome? How do babies calm themselves? What are the advantages and disadvantages of communal sleeping? With up-to-date answers to these questions and more, Dr Sadeh offers parents and professionals all the information they need to help babies and their families to sleep better.

Editorial Review:

We're supposed to spend one-third of our lives sleeping. But today a shortage of sleep—and of the right kind of sleep—is undermining our productivity, relationships, and health. Sleep problems can contribute to diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, depression, and diabetes, and they add stress to our already hectic lives. In Sleep to Save Your Life, noted sleep expert Gerard T. Lombardo, M.D., reveals the science behind these problems and what to do about them. As director of one of New York City's busiest sleep centers, Dr. Lombardo works with the sleep problems of executives, shift workers, women, children, and the elderly in "the city that never sleeps." He offers detailed strategies for getting the best treatment—and the best sleep—possible.
