A comforting delight 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book in a bookstore right when I was complaining about my sleepless nights to my husband. The other books about sleep contained dated photos, charts and figures. We found "The Sleep Book" by Jody Grant-Gray, to be filled with entertaining information, and highly useful tips for sleep. The author seemed to understand why I wasn't sleeping! And then she told me how to get there. Useful, comforting, and entertaining. This book is a delight! My husband is happy I bought it, and that doesn't usually happen...

Realistic, smart and comforting 5 out of 5 stars.

"The Sleep Book, a bedside companion" is aptly named. From the cover and inside design, to the gentle color choice of the first page, to the easy flow of topics, this book is a comfort to have next to my bedside. The author is honest, humorous and compassionate, and peppers her own writing with a spectrum of quotes from all kinds of sources. Arranged in alphabetical order by topic (...imagination, pain, passion, ritual, try, yawn, zzzzz...), I haven't read it straight through. I open it up to a page and start reading, one thing leads to another and I find myself more relaxed. This book is easier than a cup of chamomile tea. Treat yourself or someone you love.

Editorial Review:

A unique, encyclopedic account of the many ways in which science has found access to our dreams.

In what has been called "the best general introduction to this fascinating subject" (Die Welt, Hamburg), The Dimensions of Dreams summarizes in one encyclopedic volume the vast knowledge modern science has been able to amass about the world of dreams since Freud first published his groundbreaking Interpretation of Dreams in 1900. Freud's work, and that of Jung, provided the major impetus for many of the dream theories that have arisen this century, all trying to tease meaning from the often puzzling contents of dreams and to enlist them in the therapeutic process. Ole Vedfelt reviews in depth the large body of research about dreams that has found its way into the literature, from the work of Freud and Jung to that of many other important investigators, including Alfred Adler, Erich Fromm, Montague Ullmann, Calvin Hall, and Medard Boss. Vedfelt also discusses dreamwork in gestalt therapy and psychodrama, and describes the results of modern laboratory investigations of sleep and dreaming. Among the other subjects covered are dreams and psychosis, parapsychological phenomena, and how dreams are affected by organic diseases and physical symptoms. The Dimensions of Dreams is a unique and indispensable handbook for the professional, and compelling reading for the general public.

Editorial Review:

There's more than one way to make a bed, and humans throughout history have devised every sort they could imagine. From a simple blanket laid on the ground to elaborately carved four-posters hung with sumptuous draperies, from a hammock swinging under the stars to a stifling cupboard bed built into a wall, the ways in which humans have gone about trying to get a good night's sleep are myriad. This book, illustrated with some 140 images, takes readers on a lively tour of beds and sleeping customs over time and around the world. Beginning with 'sleeping low', Carlano and Sumberg show that, whereas in Europe and North America sleeping on bedding on the floor was the lot of the poor, in many other parts of the world it has long been a cultural and aesthetic choice. Beautiful tatami-futon ensembles in Japan, intricately patterned rattan mats in Borneo, and cozy textile pads, pillows, and quilts in Turkey have kept people warm and comfortable for centuries.Yet 'sleeping high', on raised platform beds, started early, too: such beds are known from archaeological finds and tomb paintings dating to the fourth century BCE in Egypt. From ancient Greece and Rome, the narrow, rectangular bed spread into Europe and then to North America, seeing innumerable elaborations along the way - not only in the designs of the bedsteads themselves but also in the styles of bedding that became integral parts of the sleeping arrangement. In the modern West, people stowed away Murphy beds in the early 1900s, romped on water beds in the 1970s, and now can buy futuristic beds designed by furniture artists. Rounding out the tour, Carlano and Sumberg describe the ways people have found to sleep safely and comfortably while on the move - whether the travellers are full-time nomads sleeping in tents or twentieth-century tourists in Pullman cars. They devote a chapter to the special beds, cradles, and cribs designed for infants and young children, and an appropriately final chapter to the abundance of sleep imagery associated with death. In short, "Sleeping Around" offers an informative and entertaining look at the history of beds and - under the impetus of both functional needs and aesthetic tastes - their ever-changing designs.

Editorial Review:

Why we need to sleep is not actually known, but it is a topic that continues to intrigue us and it is still very much the subject of active research. The author takes an historical approach to the subject and hence largely takes a chronological view of sleep research and the scientists' ideas and their experiments. Parts one and two describe the main historical figures and their various theories and discoveries. Part three describes our current state of knowledge of sleep, arousal and waking. It discusses sleep and waking disorders and discusses the current theories behind the function of sleep. This is a book readable by anyone who has some introductory biology or psychology and has an interest in why and how we sleep it will also make an excellent book for anyone taking a course on the physiology and functions of sleep.

Editorial Review:

This book describes the context of sleep research, and considers popular beliefs about sleep. The book looks at the experience of sleep, including the relationship between dreaming and psychophysiological signs such as eye movement and brainwaves, as well as the physiology and natural history of sleep, and the problems of sleep disorders that humans experience.
