This book is a scholarly collection of informative essays which are presented by prominent practitioners and well-respected research scientists in the medical and behavioral fields. Each one offers a unique perspective on the subject of human dreaming.

This is a thorough work, suitable for use as a college, graduate, or professional education text. The chapters are laid out in neat progression from those dealing with a medical emphasis, next those from a psychological perspective, and last those bringing in a cultural and folk treatment of dreaming.

For anyone who has a keen interest in delving very deeply into the subject of dreaming and exploring the frontiers of knowledge on it, who welcomes plenty of technical detail, this book would be well worth its purchase price.

Freshest approach to dreams this decade 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Mellick opens up a treasure trove of ways to reengage the images of a dream and awaken the depth of meaning hidden in the images and symbols. Even if one doesn't "believe" in dreams the author evokes the artist, the poet, the playwrite that the dream maker elicites. Surely there would be fewer artistic blocks if one would playfully hand oneself over to Mellick's wise and multifaceted direction and let the diamon of the soul hold sway. This book is made for groups, for fun and for profoundly deep soulful exploration.

Worth having in your library 4 out of 5 stars.

As an art therapist, I stumbled upon this book at my local bookshop - it was on sale, and was not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprized to find the author engaging and quite knowledgable about dreamwork. I also appreciate her humility and willingness to say that not every dream presents an easy interpretation. I would recommend this book as a useful tool for both therapists and the general public. A great interface between dreams and creativity. I especially like the copious quotes about dreamwork which the author has collected from a variety of fascinating sources and placed in the margins of the pages. I'm glad to have it in my library.

Drawing on concepts from Carl Jung, the I Ching, psychological theorists, and Aboringinal and Native American religions, psychologist and artist Jill Mellick offers enjoyable and easy techniques for harnessing the creativity of dreams. Photos.

Editorial Review:

Is there a spiritual dimension to the dream world? Can we receive spiritual guidance from our dreams? How can we tell whether a dream is truly extraordinary or just wishful thinking? Can the dreaming mind lead us to other planes of consciousness and to contact the teacher within? Swami Radha answers these and other questions, showing how dreams can help us lead more meaningful lives and eventually lead us to mystical realms beyond the imagination. She offers practical exercises and reflections that radically challenge our ideas of reality while opening the door to a vast new inner potential.

From her forty years of personal experience, she offers practical dream yoga techniques for deepening awareness of the spiritual dimensions of dreaming. Her unique approach investigates prophetic dreams, nightmares, dreams about past lives, and spiritually directive dreams.

Using an intriguing collection of her own dreams, Swami Radha explores the play of consciousness. Through her presentation of effective tools and exercises, you will learn to navigate the obscurity of the space between the dreaming and the waking state.

What do my dreams mean? 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever solved a problem in your life through a dream or woken up and had the desire to go back to sleep to finish a dream. If you have a vivid dream world you will enjoy this unique approach to unraveling your dreams and learning from them.

Symbols will often appear in our dreams. In this book, a comprehensive thesaurus provides thousands of symbols and their meanings. Dreams will often have a major theme and unique illustrations show how selected dreams progress.

Julia and Derek Parker are best-selling authors and are recognized experts in the field of dream interpretation. In this book, they explain the mechanics of sleep and dreaming and explain how to deal with the problem of nightmares. There is advice on how to create your own personal dream notebook.

The nonsensical plots and characters in our dreams often can become more rational and sensible and comment on our problems and difficulties in life. The history of dreams is an interesting chapter and is well illustrated. The Mechanics of sleep tells of how we fall into a cycle of sleep. During sleep, we experience NREM an REM sleep and people need each type of sleep for various reasons.

So, if you have had a dream in which you saw mammals, reptiles, winged creatures, fish, fire, water, earth, air, weather, trees, flowers or plants this book seeks to tell you why. There are a variety of dreams which are interpreted throughout the book.

There is so much in this book, it is hard to even list all the dreams or symbols. What I was the most interested in was dreams of flying. Apparently they are extremely common. One time in a dream, I thought I had flown into the night sky. So, I went to page 147 to see why. They say that in life if you are trying to "rise above" something or trying to achieve a position or have high ambitions, that could be the reason.

What I loved even more than the actual interpretation was the Thesaurus in which you can look up the images you see in your dreams. I can't wait to go dream something so I can look up my dreams again. I think this should be by everyone's bedside so when they wake, they can look up the meaning of their dreams. If you have dreamed it, I bet it is in this complete compilation of dream meanings.

A fascinating subject and a look into the private world of dreams.

Editorial Review:

Many of our dreams contain personal and sometimes hidden messages. Other dreams are predictive, foretelling the future. The Complete Book of Dreams shows in clear and practical detail how you can learn to interpret your dreams in order to discover much more about yourself and your psychological motivation.

Editorial Review:

Humankind's awesome fascination with dreams and the occult is ageless. Between the covers of The Interpretation of Dreams and Portents in Antiquity, readers will find some of the earliest examples of this fascination.

Collected for the first time are translations of some of the basic works used by ancient seers. Here, in their own words, are their interpretations of dreams, unraveling of signs, and their views on the significance of many kinds of unusual occurrences.

This reprint of the 1976 Samuel Stevens Hackert & Co. edition, with a new foreword by Napthali Lewis, will be of interest to psychiatrists, psychologists, classicists, and historians of religion.

From the Publisher

Man's efforts to explain the act of dreaming and to interpret or rationalize its visual content are almost as old as history itself. Lewis' Dreams and Portents is the first collection to bring together a representative variety of ancient world sources of dream interpretation, divination, and astrology featuring: - Dreams and Their Interpretations including: The Egyptian Dream Book, The Babylonian-Assyrian Dream Book, Ancient Greek and Roman Literary Allusions, Early Christian Interpretations, A Christian Dream Book - Divinations, Omens, and Prodigies - Astrology, or The Stars and Their Influence - New foreword to the 1996 edition

Dream of a Book 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Schoenewolf lists thousands of dreams - apparently from his own personal practice as well as published case histories - and offers succinct interpretations. Arranged alphabetically by subject of dream, the book is fascinating for those of us who value dreams and their inner meanings. While each entry is by necessity abbreviated, enough information is given about the dreamer and his/her background so that the quick analytical summary which follows is clear and easy to follow. Literally a dictionary, not a book with a throughline of any sort, it's a valuable and easy-to-use resource for checking out dreams similar to your own, or just for exploring the wonderful and mysterious dream worlds of strangers.

Editorial Review:

This dictionary contains over 1000 dreams from A to Z and includes a description of the dream and the dreamer, the dreamer's associations, and a brief interpretation. It goes to the root of each dream, presenting interpretations of dreams from such famous dreamers as Shakespeare, Napoleon, and Johnny Carson, as well as hundreds of patients' dreams. A chapter on dream research and a glossary of dream symbols provide psychological interpretations of common symbols in addition to the meaning attributed to these symbols in myths, fairy tales, philosophy, religion, and literature.
