The Art of Dream Healing 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Dreaming is healing. Our bodies speak to us in dreams, giving us early warning of symptoms we might develop, showing us what they need to stay well. Dreams give us fresh and powerful images for self-healing. Dreams are also the language of the soul; they put us in touch with wells of memory and sources of creativity and energy far beyond the clutter and confusion of the little everyday mind. Beyond this, dreams are experiences of the soul, and can take us - sleeping or hyper-awake - into realms where we can have direct access to sacred healers and teachers.

These themes and possibilities come vividly alive in Wanda Burch's brave and beautiful book She Who Dreams, which is both the narrative of a personal journey into healing through dreaming and an incitement to bring the gifts of active dreaming into our everyday lives.

I have been sharing dreams with Wanda since early in 1987, and I know the depth of experience and the deeps of dreaming from which this book flows. Her dreams diagnosed a life-threatening illness (breast cancer) a year before the doctors found symptoms. Her dreams guided her choice of treatment, gave her powerful imagery for self-healing and recovery, enabled her to grow a creative relationship with her physicians and awakened her to a deeper life and a vital engagement with the world as a dreambringer - one of those who creates a safe space for others to open to the gifts of dreaming, and can bring a dream to someone in need of a dream.

Her personal story is quite fascinating. Her first dream mentor was her Irish-American grandmother, a "wise woman" of the Alabama hill country. Later she met the dreamers of the Iroquois, one of whom appeared at her back door in the form of a white wolf.

But it is the story of everyday trials, more than the extraordinary elements in this book, that will touch the hearts of many readers and bring them practical guidance that is urgently needed. Wanda shows how dreams can get us through. One of her most valuable contributions to the literature of healing and recovery is to show us how we can use the self-healing tools that flow from dreamwork to support conventional medical treatments, smoothing the process and reducing adverse side-effects. For this alone, She Who Dreams is an invaluable resource for healthcare professionals, therapists, healers and caregivers.

Editorial Review:

Wanda Burch dreamt that she would die at a certain age; her dreams foretold her diagnosis of cancer, and then guided her toward treatment and wellness. She took advantage of all the usual medical resources available to her, but believes she is alive because of her intimate engagement with the dreamworld. She Who Dreams takes the reader into that healing dreamworld, opening a path to self-diagnosis and physical and psychic health. Through powerful prose and practical exercises, this book describes in compelling detail a life lived and deepened, and a death postponed. In the process it shows that wisdom lives within everyone, and that anyone can tap into that wisdom through dreamwork.

The Sleeper Must Awaken! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book is a treasure. I am totally amazed that it is not THE top rated Lucid Dreaming book here on Amazon! I have read Lebergs work Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming and the Tibeta Yogas of Dream and Sleep but THIS book breaks Lucid Dreaming and reality down to such a level that it is simultaneously liberating and frightening to comprehend: You are dreaming your reality wherever you perceive it, and the Dream is dreaming you as well as all that is in the dream! Pick up a cup of water and drink, but then think, not only are you dreaming that cup and the water but the water in the cup and the cup are dreaming you! Cuts your ego-mind to pieces! You are just as insubstantial as all that you perceive so why so serious?
Any system that would have you take it and it's "preachers and teachers" too seriously with conditional joy is control.

This book really has helped my dream recall on the path to Lucidity and the art is essential also because the language of spirit/the unconsciousness is symbol and visual imagery. The pictures in this book help to communicate to your spirit what mere words that do not evoke imagery in your mind cannot.

This book was recommended to me and I am so glad I followed through and got it. If you can remember the freedom and magic you had as a child, and think of all the cases of psychic activity which always occurs around children, and want to work on remembering your birthright GET THIS BOOK and awaken!

Editorial Review:

An unorthodox exploration of the phenomenon of lucid dreaming surveys the nature of the dream world over the last five thousand years, recent research, detailed techniques and exercises from each tradition, and analysis of the nature of dreaming versus waking. 35,000 first printing.

Perchance to dream... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"We are the stuff that dreams are made of and our little lives are rounded by a sleep." William Shakespeare

In her 200 page study, Rock has done an admirable job tracing out the history and findings of cognitive sleep research. In the process, she's endeavored to tell the story of a phenomenon that followed evolutionarily about a 140 million years ago on the phenomenon of sleep itself.

In this way, the articulated complexities of human dreams track the articulated complexities of the human brain itself. So dreams reflect the fears, anxieties, cares and hopes that are part of our daily lives. In her book, we see healthy sleep as part of a healthy psyche where our day to wounds are healed into our long standing visions of ourselves. Conversely, we also learn how unhealthy dream process can retard emotional recovery from trauma.

Thought provokingly, Rock also addresses the phenomenon of lucid dreaming wherein the dreamer takes advantage of being in a self aware dream state for creative and recreational purposes. Likewise, she discusses some great advances made by the creative thinking and boundry removal possible while one is in a dream state.

Though other reviewer comments about the turgid nature of Rock's writing are well placed, it remains true that even a poorly written book about a fascinating topic nonetheless remains fascinating particularly here wherein the writer has managed to cover a lot of ground in a relatively small space.

    Editorial Review:

From memory formation to nocturnal therapy, neuroscience's newest discoveries about our dreams.

Psychologists and philosophers have long grappled with the mysteries of dreaming, and now-thanks largely to recent innovations in brain imaging -neuroscientists are starting to join the conversation. In this groundbreaking book, award-winning journalist Andrea Rock traces the brief but fascinating history of this emerging field. She then takes us into modern sleep labs across the country, asking the questions that intrigue us all: Why do we remember only a fraction of our dreams? Why are dreams usually accompanied by intense emotions? Can dreams truly spark creative thought or help solve problems? Are the universal dream interpretations of Freud and Jung valid? Accessible and engaging, The Mind at Night shines a bright light on our nocturnal journeys and tells us what the sleeping mind reveals about our waking hours.

Taylor's book is EXCELLENT 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

For anyone who is interested in what it means to work with their dreams, for anyone who would like to know WHY it is useful to do this, Taylor's book is an excellent place to begin. He takes you through all the basic questions, including hints to improve dream recall (for those of us who insist we can't remember what we've dreamed in the night), all the way through various aspects of what various elements in our dreams are likely to mean. He also looks at how the knowledge gained through dream analysis may be applied our waking lives.

Best introduction to Dream Work you will find 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Taylor's book is the best introduction to dreamwork one can find on the market. The author writes out of a Jungian/Depth psychology perspective. Every page is filled with psycho-spiritual insight. This book provides useful tips on how to take on this rather large subject, recognizing as it does that "dreams come at the service of health and healing." If you have often wanted to reconcile your life choices with your unconcious, by aligning both with your actions this book is for you. But by doing so, spiritual unification may be the results of your efforts; in this sense, this book is a must read. The author notes that the dream state not only provides healing when we actively listen to the language in our dream states, but opens deeper levels of insight into collective, personal, and future events. Great book in my view!

    Editorial Review:

Offers an invaluable tool for the exploration of the inner life contained within our dreams and individual, group, and community techniques for discovering more of the multiple meanings inherent in every dream. With extensive, annotated bibliography.

    Editorial Review:

Silvana Amar, a psychologist with extensive experience in dream studies, has created a invaluable guide with descriptions of hundreds and hundreds of the most important dream symbols. Her well-researched explanations cover our most common dream themes and symbols, including adultery, death, jail, money, running, smoking, water, worms, and zombies.  Designed to be kept on the nightstand where users can reference it quickly first thing in the morning when their dreams are still fresh, it features a notebook for keeping track of those nightly reveries.  In addition to definitions, there’s additional important information on the science of sleep and sleep cycles; commentary on the influential dream theories of Freud and Jung; and poems on the topic by such writers as Whitman and Poe.

This has much of the same information as the Holographic Universe (above) but worded in a more scientific way. I found Talbot's book much easier to read and just better overall. This book is highly worthwhile in it's own right although. If I had to pick one it would be Talbots.

    If everything's a dream, then nothing's a dream. 2 out of 5 stars.

    10-Point Rating: (5.5)
This book gets two stars for dealing with an extremely interesting topic and for making quite a few good points throughout, however the author just wants dreams to do too much. The fact that we can and do distinguish between waking (i.e. ordinary) consciousness and dream consciousness means that the two must be qualitatively different - and in fact they are. The discontinuity of dreams among other features distinguishes them as derivative conscious states, that is to say they are not primary - everyday waking consciousness is primary. We define dreams relative to waking states and not vice-versa for a variety of reasons, and Wallace does little to challenge these obvious differences. It's a bit like saying "everything's alive" or "everything's conscious" - statements like these tend to cheapen the meanings of these words, if everything is, then nothing is.

    Editorial Review:

Explores psychological, physiological, and anthropological aspects of consciousness and dreaming, looking at the history of dream research from the ancient Greeks to modern experiments, and applying theories from quantum physics to human consciousness.

    Editorial Review:

Almost everyone wakes up in the morning and thinks ‘Why did I dream that?’ Until now, dream dictionaries offered only frustratingly inaccurate and overly generalized definitions of dream symbols. Now, the pioneering author of Living Your Dreams examines the most common dream themes – falling, flying, being chased, missing the bus, standing naked in the road, among others – and provides readers with practical tools for discovering the distinct meaning of their very personal dreams.Recognizing that dreams can only really be understood in the context of the dreamer’s life history, experience, and associations with each symbol or topic, Delaney teachers readers how to look at dreams by theme and setting, offering general interpretations as well as a unique ‘interview’ technique to translate the personal language of their dreams. Delaney also explores the dream theories of past experts such as Freud and Jung. Engaging and interactive, In Your Dreams allows readers to interpret their dreams as only they can – and to use the insight of those dreams to discover meanings in their waking lives.

God, Dreams, and Rev.; A Christian Interpretation of Dreams 2 out of 5 stars.
31 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I was rather disappointed by this book. Actually it is very well written and researched, but the title "...A Christian Interpretation of Dreams" is very misleading. It gives the impression that this book would address the art of interpretation and explain how to understand some of the rich symbolic language of dreams. The book elaborates in depth on the history of dream interpretation but has extremely little to offer when it comes to interpreting the symbolic language. Every time I got to a new section heading that sounded promising I was disappointed because all the writer does, is that he keeps emphasizing and illustrating that God does speak through dreams and how important it is to interpret and take them seriously, but for a book that size he offers next to nothing on how to interpret the symbolism.
If you want to read about the biblical and Christian history of dream interpretation, (like who took dreams seriously and who didn't), then this book is for you. But if you want a practical guide on how to interpret dreams from a Christian perspective you will be very disappointed.

    Editorial Review:

Examines the importance of dreams in the Bible, the writings of the church fathers, and the thought of modern Christian leaders.
