SJK "nurse practitioner" 5 out of 5 stars.

There are many books available on dreaming. The format of this book is the the same as so many others... dictionary. What makes this book different is the explanations of the dream content that you look up. It is clear and provocative. It is helpful in suggesting the archetype for the dream content. (Google Jung and dreams, if you are unfamiliar with dream archetypes)

Enjoy!

I actually picked this book up today at a Borders near my home. This book is huge... just filled to the brim with interpretations, however it also contains valuable dream information for explaining dreams and why we have them, (a section is included on how to use this big monstrous book)the history and beliefs, an explaination of archetypes, methods of dream interpritation, how to be a creative dreamer and a massive dream dictionary that is very much like the dictionary on (dreammoods . com) in terms of having detailed and varied definitions for different experiences of the same theme. There is also a section that teaches you how to interprit your dreams by using other peoples dreams as examples. The author then breaks down the dreams and how they should be interprited. There are over ten examples of these. At the end of this book is a dream workbook as well. If you are or know someone who gives much credit to dreams and it's science and is an active explorer or dreamworker, this is a great book, much better than many others I have seen. It contains so much at such a great price. You won't regret it.

great stuff 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Mindell is one of most insightful, innovative, and interesting figures to come from the Jungian community. His understanding of what he calls the Dreaming Body and Process Work addresses, from a unified standpoint, all areas of human experience: dreams, physical symptoms, illnesses, relationship issues, perceptions of reality, the senses, life, death, existence, and you name it. It is difficult to describe Mindell's healing approach in conventional terms because his dreambody work is not therapeutic, as in corrective, but allows for the individuation process to happen freely and naturally. Mindell points to a development of awareness of perception through all channels of experience. Among many other interesting things, he says, "The central message of this book is that the spirit of your body, the dreambody, is a multi-channeled signaller which seeks your attention through your dreams, body symptoms and relationship problems. Moreover, the dreambody is influenced by the world around you and, paradoxically, your dreambody is also the body of the world. Healing now becomes a very comprehensive task, and the term itself can be substituted for integrating dreams, and integrating the projections and problems of the world around you." Anyone who has an interest in psychology, dreams, and body work can only benefit by delving into this, and the other books of Mindell.

Editorial Review:

An introductory volume, unfolding Mindell's worldview of the body as dreaming, flowing essence and its symptoms as doorways to the unknown--to the whole human being.

Mindell says our symptoms of malaise may not be sickness in need of treatment but guides to a "royal road" of meaning and fulfillment. In other books, he has developed his ideas of the dreambody, the inner voice trying to communicate with us through our dreams, body language, and relationships in order that we might live "as we are." Here he demonstrates practical applications of this approach in work with clients, saying, "I don't believe in therapy....I let the dreambody process tell me what wants to happen and what to do next....I do not press people. Their bodies and souls know better than I do."

Editorial Review:

These collected essays by the distinguished psychoanalyst Marie-Louise von Franz offer fascinating insights into the study of dreams, not only psychologically, but also from historical, religious, and philosophical points of view. In the first two chapters, the author offers general explanations of the nature of dreams and their use in analysis. She examines how dreams can be used in the development of self-knowledge and describes how C. G. Jung worked with his own dreams, and the fateful ways in which they were entwined with the course of his life. The rest of the book records and interprets dreams of historical personages: Socrates, Descartes, Themistocles and Hannibal, and the mothers of Saint Augustine, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and Saint Dominic. Connections are revealed between the personal and family histories of the dreamers and individual and collective mores of their times. Dreams includes writings long out of print or never before available in English translation.

Editorial Review:

Joseph Cornell is well known for the oneiric quality of his art and films. Many have tried, often in vain, to put into words the strange power of his boxes--toy-like constructions whose playfulness and humor are anchored in a profound melancholy and loneliness. "Slot machines of visions," said Octavio Paz. Cornell himself is said to have enjoyed children's responses to his work; perhaps because nothing prepares one better for viewing a Cornell box than having an unbiased mind. Catherine Corman has combed through the voluminous diaries that Cornell kept throughout his life, now in the care of the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art, in search of the artist's own dreams. What she found are brief flashes of images, and short, enigmatic narratives of illumination--the verbal equivalent of Cornell boxes. In 1993, Mary Ann Caws edited a large portion of Cornell's diaries for publication by Thames & Hudson, an invaluable sourcebook for Cornell studies. This new, shorter volume is a poetic addition to that literature, equally indispensible to those interested in Cornell as it contains previously unpublished writings, but also because it is as intriguing and mysterious to the uninitiated as the magical boxes themselves. They are not derived from waking life, but appear as if by chance. Cornell spends the day eating pastries and riding a bicycle. Falling asleep on the couch is like pulling the lever of the slot machines of visions. Images of naiads, lambs, and the ocean appear. -Catherine Corman

Not So Great 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I was very excited to read and own this book, and sadly disappointed when it arrived. Unfortunately, the book is very generic in its interpretations, and doesn't offer informative insight and analysis. The definitions are very vague and the book is for parlor games more than for true dream interpretation. I also expected a bit more illustration, but there were hardly any of those either; just a few abstract drawings. However, the biggest failure of this book and the place where it earns an "F" across the board is with the indexing and alphabetizing of the dream symbols. The index is basically nonexistent, and the symbols are not arranged alphabetically. For instance, when I attempted to look up "Mother," it was actually found under "Family." Also, when I tried to look up "travel," it was listed under "places" - the listings are VERY VERY hard to find and when you do finally find them they aren't very good. I wouldn't recommend this book - it's not even good enough to have fun with.

Editorial Review:

Our unconscious world has the power to reveal our innermost secrets. Look up over 2,000 topics from A to Z, including people, events, places, and objects, and find out their actual meanings. Small Cute Helpful Book on Dreams 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I bought this little book a few days after I had a very strange dream. I find it helpful understanding why we dream and how we can use dreams to get in touch with our mind in a way that we cannot do while we are awake. The book does not end with mere interpretations of dreams; instead, it explains what we can do when we have dreams with negative implications. Also the book explains some dreams have less importance and need no interpretations. Having read this book, I no longer feel that a scary dream simply means something bad. The use of this book requires no knowledge of Kabbalistic views. I recommend this book to those who are wondering what dreaming itself means and how dreams correlate to actual life.

Editorial Review:

As Yehuda Berg showed with The 72 Names of God, hidden beneath the surface of ancient texts exist powerful, transformative technologies. In Kabbalah: The Dreams Book, Berg examines the meanings of dreams by using Kabbalistic principles. Dreams, he says, offer valuable messages and wisdom, and to ignore them is the same as leaving a potentially life-changing letter unopened. Berg shows readers how to interpret the directions in their dreams, from how to find a soul mate to ways to deflect negative energy and judgments.

Editorial Review:

From Biblical stories of Joseph interpreting Pharoh’s dreams in Egypt to prayers against bad dreams in the Hindu Rg Veda, cultures all over the world have seen their dreams first and foremost as religiously meaningful experiences. In this widely shared view, dreams are a powerful medium of transpersonal guidance offering the opportunity to communicate with sacred beings, gain valuable wisdom and power, heal suffering, and explore new realms of existence. Conversely, the world’s religious and spiritual traditions provide the best source of historical information about the broad patterns of human dream life

Dreaming in the World’s Religions provides an authoritative and engaging one-volume resource for the study of dreaming and religion. It tells the story of how dreaming has shaped the religious history of humankind, from the Upanishads of Hinduism to the Qur’an of Islam, from the conception dream of Buddhas mother to the sexually tempting nightmares of St. Augustine, from the Ojibwa vision quest to Australian Aboriginal journeys in the Dreamtime. Bringing his background in psychology to bear, Kelly Bulkeley incorporates an accessible consideration of cognitive neuroscience and evolutionary psychology into this fascinating overview.

Dreaming in the World’s Religions offers a carefully researched, accessibly written portrait of dreaming as a powerful, unpredictable, often iconoclastic force in human religious life.

Mary S. Stowell 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book about how the psyche believes in life beyond bodily death. It is full of stories, myths, and experiences that will wake you up. I have given away so many copies of this book that I always keep an extra on hand. I am glad it is back in print.

What does the unconscious say .... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This Jung quote sums up the theme of this book:

"If there is something we cannot know, we must necessarily abandon it as an intellectual problem ... But if an idea about it is offered to me - in dreams or in mythic traditions - I ought to take note of it. I even ought to build up a conception on the basis of such hints, even though it will forever remain a hypothesis."

Von Franz uses dreams, alchemy (Komarios to Cleopatra), and Egyptian mythology as exploratory tools to convincingly show that for the unconscious life after death is axiomatic.

Incredibly it seems the individuation process may continue after death!

Von Franzs style and elegance make this a book that you will want to read more than once. Also a very nice 8-page forward by Emmanuel Kennedy-Xypolitas.

    Editorial Review:

Maintaining that dreams prepare people for death and afterlife and that traditional religions have ignored dreams when it comes to death, the author attempts in this book to uncover the symbolism of death as found in dreams. She also compares death dreams to accounts of near-death experiences.
