Editorial Review:

How many times have you held your fussing or crying baby and thought, "Come on, please tell me what's going on with you!"

Well, your infant does tell you.

In What Babies Say Before They Can Talk, Paul C. Holinger, M.D., M.P.H., a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who has been studying children and their emotions for more than twenty-five years, explains how infants communicate with us, and we with them.

Dr. Holinger decodes the nine easily identifiable signals -- interest, enjoyment, surprise, distress, anger, fear, shame, disgust (a reaction to bad tastes), and dissmell (a reaction to bad smells) -- that all babies use to express their needs and wants. These insights will aid parents in discerning what their baby is feeling. This book can help all parents become more confident and self-aware in their interactions with their children, create positive communication, and put the joy back into parenting.

This is a unique work. It provides a foundation for understanding feelings and behavior. Based on emerging research, What Babies Say Before They Can Talk offers parents a new perspective on their babies' sense of the world and the people around them. The goal of this book is to help parents enhance their infants' potential, prevent problems, and raise happy, healthy, responsible children.

Tips of the slongue 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Michael Erard's terrific new book, "Um", covers everything from spoonerisms and malapropisms to eggcorns and mondegreens. If you haven't heard of the last two, they're covered here with aplomb (a plum?) as are dozens of examples of pause fillers. Since George Bush seems to have increased his summer reading over the past few years, this is one book the president shouldn't miss...he may be part of the impetus for its publication.

Ever since a friend of mine asked me at dinner years ago, "when will our waiter soove the serp?", I've been fascinated by the oddities that fly from innocent mouths. Erard categorizes these verbal miscues into all sorts of arrangements and a glossary at the end of the book is helpful in reminding the reader what material has been covered. The author looks at two areas that were of particular interest...how slips of the tongue differ in other languages and cultures and how children handle pauses and perseverations (for example) at various stages of their fluency development.

Erard has a clear and nicely-paced narrative style making "Um" such an enjoyable book. An appealing sequel would be one that comments on the three current presidential candidates and their varying contributions to public discourse, relative to what the author has written here. The next time I have my own slip of the ear (as when I heard someone say "grocery seats" when they meant "gross receipts") I'll refer back to "Um" and have a good laugh all over again.

Editorial Review:

This original, entertaining, and surprising book investigates verbal blunders: what they are, what they say about those who make them, and how and why we've come to judge them.

Um... is about how you really speak, and why it's normal for your everyday speech to be filled with errors—about one in every ten words. In this charming, engaging account of language in the wild, linguist and writer Michael Erard also explains why our attention to some blunders rises and falls. Where did the Freudian slip come from? Why do we prize "umlessness" in speaking—and should we? And how do we explain the American presidents who are famous for their verbal stumbles? Full of entertaining examples, Um... is essential reading for talkers and listeners of all stripes.

Every parent should read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

What an insightful and helpful guide to parenting. I believe I can do a better job of raising my seven-year-old as a result of reading this book. It made me realize the importance of enabling my child to be more responsible and how that will help him build his self-esteem. Her message was strong and clear that parents need to help children recognize their own self-worth and let that, rather than continual outside validation, determine how they feel about themselves. I feel better prepared to do this after reading this book.

It is well known that the way we raise our children has a huge impact on how they will function as adults. Elisa Medhus allowed me to better understand that. What better gift to give our children than the chance to be highly functioning adults who can actually feel good about themselves? This book will help parents give their children a better shot at a healthy and happy life. The author has a great sense of humor which made the reading all the more enjoyable. I highly recommend this book for all parents.

Editorial Review:

In Hearing Is Believing, award-winning author Elisa Medhus argues that even seemingly harmless phrases such as "You're such a good girl" can encourage children to become approval seekers, thwart their ability to reason, or both. Over time, these children become less inclined to trust their parents' guidance and internalize their values. Exposing potentially harmful words and phrases, many that may surprise readers, this book suggests language changes that are simple to implement and keep up. Stories illustrate positive results.

Editorial Review:

When liars are being accused of something, they'll stay calm because they're working on their rebuttal; this is why detectives were suspicious of O.J. Simpson when he didn't express outrage when accused of murdering his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman. Never Be Lied to Again is bursting with tested tips like this for quickly determining when you're being boondoggled. Body language, facial expressions, sentence structure, and word choice can all reveal when someone is lying, says psychologist David J. Lieberman, and he includes 46 of these "clues to deception" to help you, including tricks for framing questions without putting others on the defense. Once you use your newly honed "human lie detector" skills to figure out if you're being lied to, you can then dig for the truth using the specific, influential words and body postures that Lieberman suggests. Written with flair and humor, Never Be Lied to Again is designed to help you get the upper hand in any situation, whether you're trying to figure out if your spouse is cheating on you or if you suspect your coworkers are cooking the books.

Thorough and general treatment of practice of deceipt 5 out of 5 stars.
53 of 62 people found this review helpful.

A certain dry humour makes the book very readable. The description of social pressures in learning to lie, and animal world comparisons, are a useful perspective. The central theme - the danger of lying to oneself, or self deception - is of great importance in working in any large organisation. I would prescribe it as essential reading for managers and directors of most modern organisations Many readers may lack the objectivity to appreciate and believe the reports contained in the book, though they are well researched and well documented. I hope the next edition may spend more time in coping with lies. There are 13 pages in this book on therapeutic approaches toward the deceitful person. The comments on "groupthink", which involves bias of group behaviour, could also be expanded in future editions, with comments on the efficacy of countermeasures.

Editorial Review:

Lies! Lies!! Lies!!! The Psychology of Deceit looks beyond compulsive liars in our society and considers the ongoing flood of lies that we as human beings experience every day. Who lies? Not just children, politicians, advertisers, and salespeople. Our co-workers lie. Our friends lie. Our relatives lie. And we lie to them. Everybody lies. We learn to lie and to detect deceit as a developmental task. Dr. FordÂs philosophy is that lying is part of the bridge between oneÂs internal world (beliefs, perceptions, expectations, fantasies) and oneÂs external world (reality). Lies work not only to deceive others but to deceive ourselves. This book shines a spotlight on an understudied phenomenon that affects us all as we raise children, choose a relationship, move forward with a career path, or buy a used car.

Perry Wood's: Secrets of the People Whisperer - A Horse Whisperer's Techniques for Enhancing Communication and Building Relationships
By Bruce Ervin Wood

Perry Wood (no relation) won international acclaim as The Horse Whisperer, the person on whom the film of the same name was based. I didn't realize until browsing the book, that he is also an acclaimed leadership coach. The weaving of his insights into people and stories of horses made for an intriguing read. His description of fully present listening (shown below) impressed with its poetry and simple clarity, and may remind coaches of the power in that unique space.

"Holding the space means you listen to someone by being totally present; it means giving them your heart, love and full attention. This allows them all the room they need to express themselves. You stay in a peaceful state and create stillness around you and allow the other person to express whatever they wish to express, or say whatever they need to say. You don't analyze, judge or try to find solutions. When you hold the space you really do listen to the whole of them with the whole of you, which means you listen to their energy and essence, as well as to the words they use." (Page 52)

What follows are other quotes from the book:
* Highly successful people don't hang around judging or beating themselves up for failures; they just get on with it. The great achievers in life are often those who do the things that others say are impossible, and so doing, they dare to express themselves, their uniqueness and difference.
* People whisperers know that your body is one of the greater allies you can have. They are aware that your body is an integral and physical manifestation of who you are and that it constantly guides you toward the right course of action.
* Sometimes you simply don't have any sign that the love has been received, but if you know it was given in a way that they could receive, then your part in the process is done.
* Allow mistakes to be noticed, but not reprimanded.
* Inspiring people have a vision they believe in. Set an example of greatness and enthusiastic energy that helps people to see their own unrealized potential.
* Stepping into your personal power means learning to trust what you want comes to you.
* One definition of love means identifying others as part of yourself, and yourself as part of them.

Secrets of the People Whisperers - well worth the read, especially for leadership coaches.

Editorial Review:

Perry Wood learned the true art of communication in the most unforgiving of situations: standing in front of a half ton of agitated, hypersensitive horse. In Secrets of the People Whisperer, he shows how the same techniques for developing trust and understanding with a horse can work equally well in one's personal, business, family, and romantic relationships.

Proving the timeless axiom "actions speak louder than words," Secrets of the People Whisperer explains how to be a highly skilled communicator who sends and receives messages that are far more powerful than mere speech. The author's unique methods allow one to clearly relate to and positively influence another person for the mutual benefit of both parties. Finally, the author reveals how mastering this deeper way of communicating improves virtually all aspects of one's life, from more fruitful work relationships to personal relationships that are open, loving, and trusting.

Editorial Review:

Do you communicate ineffectively with some people and powerfully with others? The reason may be a difference in personalities and communication preferences. The Art of Speedreading People is a crash course in communication strategies, showing you how to observe behavioral clues to gain valuable insights into people's personalities and communication styles. The result: you become a more effective and convincing communicator, and you are more likely to receive the response you want.

This book is like a practical communications seminar based on the psychology model called Personality Typing, which is focused on identifying key personality traits in order to communicate most effectively. First, you analyze your own personality type and determine your placement on the scales of extrovert/introvert, sensor/intuitive, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The book then teaches you about the clues that indicate other people's personality type, including speaking style, body language, and occupation. You test yourself by reading a few scenarios and personality typing the characters described. You put the system to work by learning approaches to "speedreading" people in person and on the phone using skill-building exercises. Finally, you learn how to communicate effectively with people who are a different type or temperament than you. The Art of Speedreading People is intriguing and useful, especially for those who work in a sales, service, teaching, or managerial position, or any job where effective and positive communication is paramount.

You may even know what your EIQ** is.
But do you know what your EBSQ*** is?
* INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT
** EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT
*** EMOTIONAL BULLSHIT QUOTIENT

An invisible plague is wreaking havoc on human relationships. What is this destructive force? Emotional Bullshit.

In this groundbreaking book, clinical psychologist Dr. Carl Alasko contends that bullshit is everywhere and it’s getting stronger and more hazardous to our psychological well-being every day. From the highest precincts of commerce and politics to the most average, everyday conversations, we’re all affected by its toxicity. And yet most of us remain largely unaware of its influence. Alasko explains that this is because EBS is inspired by three interlocking dynamics inherent to our psychological structure: denial, delusion, and blame. Referred to by Alasko as the Toxic Trio, they work together in an intricate dance in which first a truth is denied, then delusion creates an alternate truth, and finally blame is shifted to someone else.

Drawing on extensive case studies from his private practice over the past twenty years, Alasko reveals that whether it’s a casual “I forgot,” or a premeditated deception, Emotional Bullshit always erodes trust and drives people apart. Absolutely no one is safe from its ruinous effects. The number-one New York Times–bestselling book On Bullshit familiarized the public with the philosophy of bullshit—and the humor that can surround it. This book tackles something that isn’t really that funny at all: how Emotional Bullshit is destroying people’s relationships and, in turn, their lives. Emotional Bullshit outlines a path for recognizing and breaking free from this most vicious of cycles.
