Editorial Review:

The present volume is an excellent introduction to the study of human nonverbal communication, including interaction and gesture, for students and specialists in other disciplines, as well as a convenient compilation of significant contributions to the field for experts.

Part 1 includes four articles, the import of which is primarily theoretical or methodological. Part II comprises eight articles in which instances of interaction are examined and attempts are made to explain how the behavior that can be observed in them functions in the interaction process. Part III presents six articles on what may broadly be referred to as ‘gesture’. These articles deal with specific actions, mostly of the forelimbs, which are usually deemed to have specific communicational significance. In an introductory chapter, the volume editor, Adam Kendon, not only examines the various issues raised by the eighteen papers but also shows the relevance of each article as a contribution to the development of an understanding of how human visible behavior functions communicatively.

The introductory chapter – which will stand as a classic in its own right – provides the reader with an assessment of the present ‘state of the art’ in this field.

Kendon gives an overview of the way in which the concept of ‘nonverbal communication’ arose and suggests some of its drawbacks. He further examines both the question of how ‘communication’ is to be conceived in the context of interaction and the important issue of deliberateness. This discussion is followed by a review of some of the problems attendant upon the description of behavior and identification of many of the leading matters of investigation in the structure of interaction. Finally, Kendon explores the phenomenon of ‘gesture’ and some of the issues of coding that it raises. The introductory chapter closes with an extensive and up-to-date bibliography which gives the reader a useful guide to the literature in this field.

The articles collected in Nonverbal Communication, Interaction, and Gesture clearly demonstrate that this field of study is not only very active but also on the threshold of exciting theoretical and empirical explorations.

Editorial Review:

At the heart of LaBarre’s book are seven long-term psychoanalytic cases that highlight the richly multifaceted ways in which nonverbal behavior enters into the creation and resolution of psychopathology. Working toward a refined understanding of the nonverbal organized around important phenomenological and psychodynamic distinctions, LaBarre delineates various levels of movement and behavioral interaction in order to sort out the multiple sources and meanings of nonverbal behavior. Whereas certain nonverbal behaviors derive from conflict, she shows, other nonverbal behaviors reflect temperament, aspects of early development, or other issues. And different types of nonverbal behavior, she shows, have different treatment implications. Certain nonverbal behaviors can be directly confronted and discussed in the therapeutic conversation while other nonverbal behaviors will affect the envelope of patient-therapist relatedness and call for altered participation by ! the therapist at the nonverbal level.

A NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION BIBLE 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is, beyond doubt, the most practical, well-written book on nonverbal communication in print today. It not only provides a primer on noverbal communication in general, but delivers plenty of real world nut-and-bolts strategies designed to sharpen the reader's communication and negotiation skills. It demonstrates how to notice and appropriately respond to the nonverbal communication cues provided by the person you are dealing with, to the benefit of both parties. You could attend a dozen seminars on the subject and never get the breadth and depth of the information provided. The arena in which the author applies her considerable skills is mediation. But don't let that deter you if you not in the legal field. The book is a gem. Read it, enjoy it, and profit by it soon.

Editorial Review:

I Hear What You Say, But What Are You Telling Me? is a fascinating, original, and invaluable tool kit filled with practical information and techniques for mediators who want to use nonverbal communication to their strategic advantage. Employing a proven process, Barbara Madonik--communication expert, mediator, and international consultant--reveals what it takes to understand, analyze, and utilize nonverbal communication to greatly enhance the mediation process.

If you have already read three or four book on non-verbal communications, then you may skip this one. If you have only read one and looking for another, a better choice will be "The Definitive Book of Body Language" by Barbara Pease and Allan Pease. This book's title is very eye-catching but the book's presentation of ideas and anecdotes was fragmented. Indeed, there is a lot of detail --- Chinese offering rice to the dead (contrast to flowers being planted on graves), or Pres Bush taking to a red tie after 09/11 (and the mistake when he wore the same red tie when giving a speech after the Madrid bombing), or white elephant as a gift the king will give to someone he wants to impoverish, and elephants communicating at under-20Hz, or earrings with mention of Agassi and Barry Bonds, a section on nonverbal communications from the future self to the current self via pre-cognitive dreams, and a section on what a good host should do to deal with introverts(hold their hand, coax them) and extroverts(don't let them monopolize conversations) --encyclopedic, maybe, but a number of the details (whales?????) became unrelated clutter of little value to "Non-Verbal Communications".

Editorial Review:

Anyone who can successfully read people can communicate and hold power. It's human nature to make decisions quickly, based on subconscious impressions of how a person looks and acts. Police officers and poker players often look for non-verbal cues in the people they deal with. They call these cues 'tells' -- and pride themselves on seeing 'tells' where ordinary people don't. Here are practical tips for understanding the inner motivations of others, and for controlling your own message to the world. Non-verbal communcation isn't about beauty or fashion or external first impressions. It is the sum total of ones' vocal inflections, facial expressions, gestures, posture and physical demeanor when communicating with others.

Editorial Review:

The "body language" or gestures of praise, adoration, contemplation, ritual dance, and care of the neighbor are meaningful to the ethnic group; African Christians tune into these body motions to express the one Christian faith. In Worship as Body Language, Father Uzukwu details how the patterns of the African ritual assemblies and sacred narratives have merged with Jewish, Gospel, and early Church traditions to create living Christian communities and liturgies.
