Editorial Review:

Jean Piaget was one of the most salient and inspirational figures in psychological and educational research this century. He was prolific, authoring or editing over eighty books and numerous journal papers which have spawned a huge and fertile continuation of his research over the decades. A major component of any course on children's psychological development and a research tradition that is expanding, scholars need access to the original texts rather than relying on secondhand accounts. Jean Piaget: Selected Works is a chance to acquire key original texts, most of which have been previously unavailable for several years.

This bool really helped my with my class at the University of the Pacific for Dr. Longmire. While the class was really boring, the book helped me understand everything i needed to know for thethe final. Lots of terminology and lots of good examples. If you want to learn about language this is your guide to success.

Editorial Review:

Once again, this comprehensive, easy-to-read book explores the way in which children learn language, the way language is taught to children, and how these two roads to language sometimes diverge—always giving equal treatment to first and second language learning. Piper tracks language acquisition, from birth through the school years, presenting numerous cases studies of children's experiences as a means of illustrating stages of language development and the sequence of skills attainment. In addition, she thoroughly covers bilingualism, paying particular attention to the differences between second language learning at home and in a school setting. For ESL and elementary school speech teachers.

Editorial Review:

This book takes a close look at the ways that five sign languages borrow elements from the surrounding, dominant spoken language community where each is situated. It offers careful analyses of semantic, morphosyntactic, and phonological adaption of forms taken from a source language (in this case a spoken language) to a recipient signed language. In addition, the contributions contained in the volume examine the social attitudes and cultural values that play a role in this linguistic process. Since the cultural identity of Deaf communities is manifested most strongly in their sign languages, this topic is of interest for cultural and linguistic reasons. Linguists interested in phonology, morphology, word formation, bilingualism, and linguistic anthropology will find this an interesting set of cases of language contact. Interpreters and sign language teachers will also find a wealth of interesting facts about the sign languages of these diverse Deaf communities.

Editorial Review:

Progressing gradually from babbling to meaningful sentences is something most babies do naturally. But why do they? John Locke's answer constitutes a fascinating journey along the path of language development, a tour that takes in all the stops--neurological and perceptual, social and linguistic--that mark the way to intelligible speech. A major synthesis of the latest research on early language acquisition, this volume revises the way we understand ourselves and our approach to speech.

Editorial Review:

The essays in this collection reflect Smith's belief that we learn from other people, not so much through conscious emulation as by "joining the club" of people we see ourselves as being like, and by being helped to engage in their activities.

perhaps out of date ? 3 out of 5 stars.

I'm not sure how much of this book is still germane. But it has considerable work reporting on different methods of teaching second languages. One topic is the difference in performance between adult and adolescent students. Another looks at psycholinguistic theories of reading, focusing strictly on the written language.

If you use this book as a language teacher, there might be useful sections with hints on how to present materials and at what rate, to your students. But in general, trying going for a more recent text.
