Editorial Review:

Based on the author's previous guides to a 10-touchstone method of grief therapy, this book takes an inspirational approach to the material, presenting the idea of wilderness as a sustained metaphor for grief—and likening the death of a loved one to the experience of being wrenched from normal life and dropped down in the middle of nowhere. Feeling lost and afraid in this uncharted territory, people are initially overwhelmed, the book explains, but they begin to make their way through the new landscape by searching for trail markers—or touchstones—until they emerge as intrepid travelers climbing up out of despair. The touchstones for each step are described in short chapters such as "Embrace the Uniqueness of Your Loss," "Recognize You Are Not Crazy," and "Appreciate Your Transformation."

I recently lost my Mom to suicide. Before this experience, I had little to no knowledge of suicide. This book has helped me tremendously with the many questions, emotions, feelings, thoughts, and basic understanding of such a horrific experience. Losing my Mom is hard enough, but this book has opened my eyes to understanding the many other emotions that have come my way. Carla provides first hand insight, and Dr. Myers gives medical insight. Both provide guidence and open the door to healing. Thank you for this book.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

A Grief Like No Other is the book no one wants to ever have to buy; sadly, many people continue to need it. From 9/11 to Cindy Sheehan's son – from mass tragedies like the recent London bombings to Law and Order type crimes that make the news only to be replaced by another name. As such, more people are left with the aftermath of dealing with the violent death of a loved one. It brings its own special brand of grieving since victim's families can spend years dealing with legal ramifications, guilt, and a myriad of other circumstances that don't accompany "normal" deaths. Kathleen O'Hara knows both sides of this coin. As a therapist, she has counseled hundreds of people dealing with grief. As a mother, she saw her worst fears realized when her college-aged son was brutally murdered in 1999. In the aftermath of Aaron's murder, O'Hara developed the seven stage journey that is at the heart of A Grief Like No Other. Although this is a book for those left behind in the aftermath of violence, it offers concrete and practical steps and stages, allowing family and friends safe passage through this incredibly harrowing journey.

Editorial Review:

Some losses are so subtle they go unnoticed, some so overwhelming and cruel they seem unbearable. In painful moments we must make a choice: Will we allow the difficulties we face to become forces of destruction in our lives, or will we find a way to transform our suffering into a source of strength?

A theologian with the heart of a poet, Rabbi David Wolpe explores the meaning of loss, and the way we can use its inevitable appearance in our lives as a source of strength rather than a source of despair. Wolpe creates a remarkably fluid account of how we might find a way out of overwhelming feelings of helplessness and instead create meaning in difficult times.

The national bestseller by "a rabbi who is as gifted with words as he is with wisdom."--Chaim Potok

"This is a book to pass on to people who are grieving--i.e., every single person we know." --Kirkus Reviews

"An exceptional book. Through a mix of scholarship, pathos, anecdote and personal experience, David Wolpe takes on this most crucial subject with the healing hands of a teacher. I gaze with awe at his completed task."--Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie

"In this wonderful volume, Rabbi David Wolpe combines wisdom and compassion; it is also highly readable."--Elie Wiesel

"Wolpe is a gifted writer...melodic and lyrical."--Los Angeles Times

Editorial Review:

"Norman, my love. It’s hard to believe this whole thing, this book, started with an overwhelming desire to talk to you, when I sat down in Paris and wrote, ‘A letter to my darling husband’ and then painfully had to add, ‘…on the first anniversary of his death.’"

Thus begins Fern Field Brooks’ odyssey through the first year of mourning for her beloved husband, Norman Brooks. 'Letters to My Husband' is the ultimate result of her touching, heartrending, yet often humorous journey, which offers comfort and inspiration to anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one.

In these letters written over the course of a year, she relives the trauma of her husband’s fatal heart attack, as well as many tender moments of their marriage. She examines her life—as a young girl studying opera in Rome, her past loves, her accomplished career as a TV and movie producer. And she reflects upon growing older—and alone—in the youth oriented entertainment industry.

From Paris to Los Angeles to Toronto to New York, she confronts life alone, alternately denying her loss, burying herself in work, raging against her pain, recounting special memories and struggling to get on with her life. By sharing her own loss, Fern Field Brooks offers a great gift to others.

Highly recommended 5 out of 5 stars.

The book was written by a Catholic widow age 45 whose husband died suddenly, leaving her with 9 kids. I bought this book for the husband of my (also young) friend who was killed in a car accident, leaving two very young children. I read it before giving it to him, and I thought it to be a very practical and purposeful guide that gives many "how-to" pointers in how to continue on, in addition to outlining the emotions of grief. Many books have stories on grief - working through emotions - but this one gives practical advice on finances, legal affairs, dealing with grieving children as well as healing yourself. I will let y'all know if he found it as helpful as I thought he would. It's a short read (122 pages) and is written in an easy, straightforward manner by a sympathetic writer. I would recommend this for an unexpected or young death, especially of one who left young kids behind. Even though it is Catholic-oriented, I would recommend it for those who are Christian but not Catholic as well.

Editorial Review:

This book deals with a variety of practical concerns for those who have lost their mates to death, including stages of grief for adults and children, mourning, loneliness, sexuality, networks of support, financial priorities and planning, good health practices, and healing.

I cannot think of a better book to recommend. Those who should be reading it, likely are not and those of us who try to cherish each moment are likely to be the fans. Like preaching to the choir...if only the others would listen too.

A MUST READ 5 out of 5 stars.

SPEAKS FROM THE HEART. WISH EVERYONE IN THIS SITUATION COULD PUT THEIR FEELINGS INTO WORDS AS ELEGANT.

Don't take life for granted! It is a gift! 4 out of 5 stars.

This book was enjoyable reading. It makes you think about how short life is and how we take our loved ones for granted that they will always be there. Fact is: they will not always be there so let them know how much you love and care for them now while you can.

Love it 5 out of 5 stars.

Well written and such an inspiration. This is a life lesson we all need to hear everyday. Life is a gift and we need to enjoy the journey.

Editorial Review:

Kristine Carlson has created an incredibly moving book in memory of her late husband, Richard, including his love letter to Kristine on their eighteenth wedding anniversary. The letter answers the questions, "If you had one hour to live and could make just one phone call, who would it be to, what would you say, and why are you waiting?"

Companioning the Bereaved 4 out of 5 stars.

As a facilitator of a suicide grief support group I found this book very helpful for those who are aiding the grieving. Especially for counselors.

Editorial Review:

Renowned author and educator Alan Wolfelt redefines the role of the grief counselor in this guide for caregivers. His new model for "companioning" the bereaved gives a viable alternative to the limitations of the medical establishment, encouraging counselors and other caregivers to aspire to a more compassionate philosophy. This approach argues that grief need no longer be defined, diagnosed, and treated as an illness but rather should be an acknowledgement of an event that forever changes a person's worldview. Through careful listening and observation, the caregiver learns to support mourners and help them help themselves heal.

Editorial Review:

"I fell in love with a prideful, tense bundle of muscle and sinew that stood seventeen inches high. You would see a small brown dog; I saw perfection."

So begins the story of Kate Jennings's unexpected love affair with two border terriers, first Stanley, then, a few years later, Sophie. A fiercely intelligent writer, an astute observer of people and her surroundings, a recent widow not ready to face her grief, an irascible Australian with no time for indulgent New Yorkers and their pampered pets, Jennings falls hard. She is swept off her feet, stunned by the depth of her love. Her life is suddenly overtaken by Stanley and, when she is seduced into getting him a companion, by the pair of them.

But after several years with her willful yet cherished dogs, Jennings came to the heartrending realization that they needed more than she could give -- and that she must reassess her own life, too. First and foremost, Stanley and Sophie is a book about dogs, understanding them, doing the best by them. It is also a vivid chronicle of Jennings's grief and sadness -- for the loss of a husband, for the city after September 11, for two pigtailed macaques in Bali, for a world going to hell in a handbasket. This is a bittersweet and darkly humorous memoir about the way two rivalrous, demanding, idiosyncratic, exhilarating dogs gave Jennings daily purpose and showed her the way to her own heart.
