Chilling Anthology of Voices 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The accounts treated in this study of interned women are a chilling assortment of shattered lives. Always in the periphery of each story is the question of how mental illness is defined and used by society as an instrument of exclusion or social conditioning. This historical and anecdotal aspect of this book is nonetheless relevant as the horrors and indignities (degradation and abuse, rape, etc.) have continued on into our times, though with albeit increased scrutiny. The 'use' of psychiatry for nontherapeutic ends is as horrifying as it commonplace; a variety of hair-raising studies (such as Dangerous Minds by Robin Munro) have examined its political use. I prefer individual narratives to surveys of cases--autobiographies or diaries-- in the unusual situation in which the interned woman was sufficiently lucid to be able to recount her experience. There is admittedly almost always an element of sexual oppression and domination to these stories, as the Institution or its principals proceed to impose their agenda or themselves on the helpless victims. Narratives such as Running with the Devil by Margot Zimmermann or Writing on the Wall by Mary Elene Wood, like Geller's Women of the Asylum, are rife with material for a prurient film.

Editorial Review:

Twenty-six first-person accounts by women placed in asylums from 1840 to 1945 provide a chilling study of women in psychiatric institutions, chronicling involuntary imprisonment by male family members, as well as voluntary commitment, social conventions, and attitudes toward women and insanity.

Good book. 4 out of 5 stars.

Several years ago, Hope Edelman wrote a book that was supposed to help women deal with the loss of a mother. She did this so that other women would not have to go through the ordeal she did. Specifically, the ordeal of not having an adequate reference for dealing with such a tragedy.

Her efforts resulted in the widely popular Motherless Daughters.

With the publication of the book came a flood of letters from women who wanted to share their own experiences with Edelman.

In response, Edelman has compiled many of these letters into the compact Letters from Motherless Daughters. The purpose of this book is to show the many ways in which women have come to deal with their tragic losses.

After reading letter upon letter, I too realized something that she claimed she was at first unaware of: one never gets over the loss of an important person. All one can do is either choose to mourn and dwell on the past, or choose to grow from the loss and continue on with life.

Many of the letters are poignant, while others are heart-wrenching. Yet others display a true sense of courage, while some reflect the confusion and agony that has invaded the daughter's life.

Reading such letters is beneficial to a certain degree--they open one's eyes to the bitter reality of dealing with death, and they allow one to see that others have also experiences similar feelings.

Although these letters do serve a crucial purpose, they are only letters. Nothing can truly dissipate the trauma of enduring the loss of a mother--it is something that no one can ever be fully prepaired for.

Letters from Motherless Daughters is a book whose value has to be discovered by the person reading it.

Editorial Review:

In a companion volume to the national best-seller, Motherless Daughters, the editor adds her own words to letters from women of all ages whose mothers have died, writing about her experiences starting support groups for women.

Editorial Review:

Nobody Passes is a collection of essays that confronts and challenges the very notion of belonging. By examining the perilous intersections of identity, categorization, and community, contributors challenge societal mores and countercultural norms. Nobody Passes explores and critiques the various systems of power seen (or not seen) in the act of “passing.” In a pass-fail situation, standards for acceptance may vary, but somebody always gets trampled on. This anthology seeks to eliminate the pressure to pass and thereby unearth the delicious and devastating opportunities for transformation that might create.
Mattilda, aka Matt Bernstein Sycamore, has a history of editing anthologies based on brazen nonconformity and gender defiance. Mattilda sets out to ask the question, “What lies are people forced to tell in order to gain acceptance as 'real'.” The answers are as varied as the life experiences of the writers who tackle this urgent and essential topic.

Editorial Review:

You May Be Commitment-Phobic If:

  • You have a mile-long list of requirements for your ideal mate
  • You go from one short-lived relationship to the next
  • You have a habit of dating "unavailable" men
  • You think many of your married friends have settled for less
  • You are constantly blowing "hot" and "cold" in your relationships

For years, it was the men who had the monopoly on commitment-phobia. Today, single women are the fastest-growing segment of the population, with over forty-seven million single women in this country and twenty-two million of them between the ages of twenty-five and forty-four. Whatever the reasons -- fear of divorce, increased financial independence, delayed motherhood -- more women than ever no longer feel the urgency, or the ability, to settle down. Lucky for this growing group of women, author and former commitment-phobe Elina Furman has written Kiss and Run, the first-ever book about female commitment anxiety.

Filled with fun quizzes, first-person testimonials, and step-by-step action plans, Kiss and Run includes the top-five panic buttons, advice for curbing overanalysis, and tips for fixing negative commitment scripts. You'll also find the seven types of commitment-phobes, including the Nitpicker, the Serial Dater, and the Long-Distance Runner.

Based on the stories of more than one hundred women, this straight-talking guide helps single women conquer commitment anxiety and say yes to love.

Inside a Man's Heart 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

In communicating and trying to figure out what it is men want, sometimes it's necessary to go directly to the source: men! Michelle McKinney Hammond has done that in her latest book, 101 WAYS TO GET AND KEEP HIS ATTENTION. She has interviewed 100 men of various ages, races, backgrounds, and socioeconomic status to find out exactly what it is they look for in a woman; especially the one they will make their wife. Using their answers and her Christian background, Ms. Hammond has created a step-by-step guide for women interested in getting inside a man's heart, while simultaneously making themselves better people.

Although the book is spiritually based with scriptures and guidance from God's teachings, it is also broken down into the basics of what most men agree attracts them to women. Using the five senses as the focus, this book is indeed a repository of information for becoming the woman who not only interests a man, but also one who is pleasing to God. It's no big secret that men enjoy the physical appearance of women, but 101 WAYS TO GET AND KEEP HIS ATTENTION delves a bit deeper into the man's psyche and shows his vulnerability, his desire for love, affection, gentleness, and to be appreciated. It further details how our moods, tone, and even touch can make or break his spirit. As an extra bonus, sprinkled throughout the book are quotes, as well as poems highlighting the beauty of love and sharing that love with another person.

Ms. Hammond urges women to look at themselves, open up for revelation and discovery, and change attitudes as necessary to fully reap the benefits. I enjoyed this book and have incorporated the teachings within my own day-to-day dealings with my husband. It is a delight to find a read that inspires and motivates, as well as celebrates and encourages the beauty of not only love, but how to be loving. (RAW Rating: 4.5)

An approach to psychology that women will embrace 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was recommended to me by a professional in the field. I poured over it's theory, built of moving examples, rather easy and engrossing to read. Now I see that a desire for connection is not a weakness, but a strength.

This book demonstrates how traditional psychology is based on a male point of view, and it reveals some of the unknown about healthly "life-giving" attitudes. Read this quickly, before you buy into an archaic model once again. Amazing, in this day and age, that this light has not been shed on us before.

An exciting new perspective in psychology 4 out of 5 stars.

Instead of basing psychology from the point of view of the individual and personal gratification and development, this book shifts our view to the realm of relationships and connection. The basic human need is not solely self-gratification in the way we usually think of it, but a desire for mutually empathic & empowering connection with others which is gratifying and results in psychological growth for all parties. The book lays out the beginnings of this new view and what it means to psychology. The book reflects the fact that this theory is still new and developing. The ideas and thoughts are sure to make a difference in the way psychology is practiced in the future. All the basics of this aspect of psychology are laid out and illustrated. Though there is still work to be done in this area of the field, the book is a good opening.

Editorial Review:

Based on the authors' discovery that connectedness in relationships is a major source of women's psychological health, The Healing Connection offers ways to transform relationships—with family members, friends, and colleagues, as well as in therapy—for growth and health.

DEAR JANE AUSTEN: A Heroine's Guide to Life and Love by Patrice Hannon
October 3, 2007

Rating: 4 Stars

Here's a must-have for Jane Austen fans and fans of good literature everywhere. DEAR JANE AUSTEN is a collection of fictional letters written by Jane Austen to women of the 21st century who write to her for advice on love and other related topics. Patrice Hannon, an expert on all things Jane Austen, has done an excellent job in creating these letters in the same voice and writing style that one has come to recognize. Topics addressed by Miss Austen including tips on extra-marital sex, finances, etiquette, family matters, and how to recognize the special man that may become ones future husband.

DEAR JANE AUSTEN is a very short book, approximately 150 pages in length, but I didn't find it a fast read. This does not read like a contemporary book but as if it were written in the 1800's. But don't let this stop you. For the true Jane Austen fan, this is a definite must-read. Run to your nearest bookstore or order it online. You will not regret it, as it was a very enjoyable experience.

Editorial Review:

Advice delivered with sense and sensibility just in time for the major motion picture Becoming Jane

Women have looked to Jane Austen’s heroines as models of appropriate behavior for nearly two centuries. Who better to understand the heart of a heroine than Austen? In this delightful epistolary “what if,” Austen serves as a “Dear Abby” of sorts, using examples from her novels and her life to counsel modern-day heroines in trouble, she also shares with readers a compelling drama playing out in her own drawing room. Witty and wise—and perfectly capturing the tone of the author of Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice—Dear Jane Austen is as satisfying as sitting down to tea with the novelist herself.

Editorial Review:

From the author of Women Who Think Too Much, a groundbreaking book that uncovers a hidden source of depression in women today
Depression is a common and debilitating problem among women, though it rarely occurs in a vaccum. As Susan Nolen-Hoeksema’s original research shows, overthinking—a tendency to ruminate on problems rather than to seek solutions—often co-exists with unhealthy eating habits and/or heavy drinking. In fact, 80 percent of women who report suffering from one of those also suffer from another. This groundbreaking book, written in a vivid narrative style that captures the complexities of women’s lives today, explains how the three core problems of the Toxic Triangle reinforce one another, wreaking havoc on women’s emotional well-being, physical health, relationships, and careers.
Escape is possible, Nolen-Hoeksema assures us, for those who are already aware that they suffer from a serious problem as well as for the hundreds of thousands of others who have not yet examined the role that bingeing and purging—on negative thoughts, food, or alcohol—plays in their lives. Nolen-Hoeksema shows women how to harness their emotional and interpersonal strengths to overcome the stress caused by a destructive relationship with food, alcohol, and overthinking so that they can fashion effective, healthier strategies for living the life they deserve.
