Editorial Review:

Wake Up, Sister. It’s Your Turn

A full life requires cultivation. The minute we take our hands off the plow, fail to reseed, forget to fertilize, we’ve lost our crop. And yet, most women I know, while in the service of some greater good have let their very lives wilt on the vine.

Having been taught the fine art of accommodation, most of us have developed a knack for selfless behavior. We’ve dulled our personal lives while propping up everyone else’s, and we’re no longer able even to imagine having any sort of adventure, romance, meaning, or purpose for ourselves. In short, we’ve gotten way off track and taken the wrong road to self-satisfaction, foolishly thinking that after all of the doing, giving, trying, and overworking someone will offer us a reward. But Prince Charming was a bad joke and all the fairy godmothers are dead. Instead of happy ever after, most of us end up with the ache. We wake up each day with an inner gnawing, a hunger for more, a craving for an overhaul, but we are too listless, tired, or depressed to do anything about it. We have spent the greater part of our lives pouring ourselves out like a pitcher. No wonder we feel so empty. But we lack the necessary energy, a helpful roadmap, and any type of guidance and support. Well, it’s time to change all of that.

—From A Weekend to Change Your Life

New York Times bestselling author Joan Anderson gives women practical advice and inspiration for building creative, independent, and fulfilling lives through discovering who they truly are and who they can be.

Like Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, Joan Anderson’s bestselling A Year by the Sea revealed a far larger than expected constituency, in the form of thousands of women struggling to realize their full potential. After years of focusing on the needs of others as a wife and mother, Anderson devoted a year to rediscovering herself and reinvigorating her dreams. The questions she asked herself and the insights she gained became the core of the popular weekend workshops Anderson developed to help women figure out how—after being all things to all people—they can finally become what they need to be for themselves. A Weekend to Change Your Life brings Anderson’s techniques to women everywhere, providing a step-by-step path readers can follow at their own pace.

Drawing on her own life and on the experiences of the women she meets at her workshops, Anderson shows women how to move beyond the roles they play in relationship to others and reclaim their individuality. Through illustrations and gentle instruction, she illuminates the rewards of nurturing long-neglected talents, revitalizing plans sacrificed to the demands of family life, and redefining oneself by embracing new possibilities.

reading this could endanger you 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

i read steven carter's book over five years ago. it was the first book i read when my relationship with my boyfriend started going south. at first, it seemed to have all the answers. he displayed the behavior described in this book.

looking back five years, i feel this book really sent me down a dangerous path. turns out my boyfriend was not "commitmentphobic" he was psychopathic.

calling what i endured a "phobia" is irresponsible. a phobia can be overcome. a phobia is harmful only to the person experiencing it.

sometimes these relationships can be WAY more complicated and dangerous than a fear of spiders or high places...

many many people diagnosed with dangerous personality disorders cannot commit. it's way more complicated than carter would have you believe.

carter, in my opinion, simply gathered up stories from suffering women and reprinted them in a book. he provides no insight, no advice, no alternatives to his "commitmentphobic" theory. he is no licensed professional, and actually, even licensed professionals have difficulty identifying a narcissist, socio or psychopath.

my gut tells me he did his followup book about narcissism because so many women contacted him about commitmentphobia and suggested narcissism to him. a little search on the web and viola! carter had his new book on narcissism - probably a weak attempt to repair the damage he did with his phobia theory.

this book is a waste of time and dangerous. it will provide no answers. don't trust carter with your mental health.

it took me five years to find the answers, after following carter down the wrong path. i finally found the answers i needed in two books - "the sociopath next door" and "without conscience."

people with serious personality disorders aren't all serial killers. experts say 1 in 25 people is a sociopath. it just means they have no conscience, and can do anything without guilt.

if your partner emotionally tortures you - i recommend you take a look at these books. "commitmentphobia" makes a joke out of something that could destroy you.

Editorial Review:

This is the classic relationship book that started them all, now available in paperback. It informs women of the warning signs of commitmentphobia, and explains how to avoid heartbreak.

Bla Bla Bla 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This book is possibly the worst I have read in a long time. It blabs on making inane points with specific examples that justify the exact inane point. It even says "science" was started in Europe in the 16th century...um sure... The According to the Media and According to the Research sections are rediculous. The author's own personal bias towards physchology is more easily seen than say Michael Moore's bias towards America in Stupid White Men. This book is a waste of your time.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a balanced approach to gender study- providing research related to both men and women's issues and encouraging critical thinking about topics that are relevant to all people. This book examines the topic of gender - the behaviors and attitudes that relate (but are not entirely congruent with) biological sex. Research and scholarship form the basis of this book, providing the material for a critical review and an attempt at an overall picture of gender from a psychological perspective. To accent the relevance of research findings in vivid detail, Brannon supplements the review of scholarly research with personal, narrative accounts of gender-relevant aspects of people's lives as well as highlights from a cross-cultural perspective of gender. The personal narrative and diversity highlights help to balance the research-based scholarship with the personal experience of gender. For anyone with an interest in gender studies.

Editorial Review:

Popular Women of Faith speaker and author of Lessons I Learned in the Dark, Jennifer Rothschild, has a message for every woman: Words are powerful. Especially the words women speak to themselves. All too often what they say to themselves when they lie in bed at night or look in the mirror in the morning is not even close to the words God wants them to speak to their souls.

Scripture has a lot to say about this “soul talk.” Because many women feel overwhelmed and struggle with issues of self–esteem, depression, and discouragement, Jennifer shares practically and helpfully from her own life and from Scripture to show how every woman can turn her words—and her life—around for good.

She offers 7 powerful things a woman can say to her soul, including:

  • Press On – “March on my soul, be strong” (Judges 5:21)
  • Look Up – “My soul, put your hope in God” (Psalm 42:5)
  • Chill Out – “Be at rest, O my soul” (Psalm 116:7)

Self Talk, Soul Talk is perfect for individual or small group study and includes interactive pages and Scripture passages for digging deeper.

a much needed book 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I haven't read this book cover to cover (or received it YET) but I have been going to the bookstore and sitting down and working my way through until my copy arrives from Amazon. After reading only a few pages, I knew that this was a "must have" in my library of Feminine Empowerment. Females are conditioned in this society to be "nice" at all cost and to avoid standing up for ourselves out fear of that we may not be seen as the very thing that is harming us. At first I was unsure if this was a purchase I should make. Some of the case stories in Beverly Engel's book are heartbreaking and can leave you feeling vulnerable, angry and just plain disgusted. Yet, at the same time, I know that these are our stories and they need to be told in order to empower future generations to break the cycle.

I've currently given this title 3 stars because I have not read it fully. But the ovrerall message is excellent and once I've read it completely, will evaluate this again and judge accordingly.

Editorial Review:

Overcome to pressure to please other people with the tools and guidance in The Nice Girl Syndrome: Stop Being Manipulated and Abused — and Start Standing Up for Yourself. Renowned author and therapist Beverly Engel, who has helped thousands of women recognize and leave emotionally abusive relationships, can show you how to take control of your life and take care of yourself. Filled with true stories and practical advice, this book will show you how to identify your “nice girl” identity, confront your beliefs and behaviors and show you how to adopt a healthier attitude.

A fascinating vision for the newest of new men 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Now the truth is that I am no newcomer to philosophy, not am I a newcomer to the idea that man must learn to create himself in order to come to terms with his own concept of manhood. This is an essential vision from a very wise writer. A man owes it to himself to make this exploration if you do not want to end up an unhappy life-trudger. I came originally into this exploration from zen, from Nietzsche and from the seduction community. This is for a man willing to explore the truth... to explore his own truths and is willing to embrace his own fears to get to something new. Just read it.

Just OK 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

According to a previous reviewer, the first 1/3 of the book was insightful, and I agree. However, after that, the author's Left-Liberal-Environmentalist biases seem to take over. I don't mind that he has these leanings, but I do mind that they seem to be his only "solutions" to the problem of integrating manhood into life.

I have been in a journey to explore and discover what is both right and wrong with my masculinity - to see the strengths and weaknesses I have, as well as where I have failed to take responsibility for how I have used, misused or neglected them. After reading "Iron John", "Self-Made Man", "What Could He be Thinking" and others, I lost interest in this book about 1/2 way through.

Editorial Review:

A guide to establishing new personal ideals of heroism, strength, and potency for a fuller life examines the stereotypes, myths, and evolving roles of contemporary men, presenting an alternative vision of virtue and virility. Reprint. 100,000 first printing.

Editorial Review:

This revision of the best-selling text for undergraduate courses offered by departments of Psychology in the Psychology of Women, Sex and Gender, or Sex Roles draws on research from sociology, anthropology, communication, biology, history, and literature. Known for its engaging, never oversimplified style, WOMEN AND GENDER features an integrated thematic organization throughout the book that is synthesized in its final chapter.

The authors, well-known, active scholars in the field, take a social constructionist perspective (i.e., gender is a social system of meanings, status, and power, not just a personality characteristic of individuals). The text takes a feminist point of view, advocating basic equality of women and men social, economical, and political while objectively reporting research findings. Information on race, age, class, and sexual orientation, is included and integrated into all text chapters. Four themes are woven throughout the book: Gender is more than just sex; Language and naming are a source of power; Women are a diverse group; and Psychology should be related to social change

In the third edition, the short introductory chapter is now immediately followed by the popular chapter about women stereotypes and the harm they do, while the more theoretical chapter on personality has been integrated into other appropriate chapters and linked to current research and issues in the news. More attention is paid to the role of the media in defining girls and women of all ages. The chapter shows how images of women continue to differ from those of men, examines how the media sees women and men world-wide, and looks at the similarities of these depictions cross-culturally. Each chapter now ends with “Connecting Themes,” summary of how the book’s four themes are played out in the topics of the chapter. Much more material is included in each chapter on the cultural and ethnic diversity of women with added new findings on ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, social class, women of color, international issues, and women from around the world. In each chapter, a new “Making a Difference” boxed feature spotlights a woman activist who has changed society. A new chapter four on the meanings of difference asks, “How different are men and women really?” and answers this question in terms of contrasting feminist perspectives, presented in the context of concrete social problems. A new concluding chapter 15, “Making a Difference: Toward a Better Future for Women,” ties together the four themes of the book and presents an optimistic view of both how the women's movement has changed changed society and how students can continue to change society positively in response to the women’s movement.

Other new topics include: analysis of the backlash against feminism (chapter 1); the role of sexism in the schools (chapters 3 and 8); media images of women athletes and the representation of women in rap and music videos (chapter 4); pornography, race, and hostility toward women (chapters 4 and 14); factors influencing women’s perception of their leadership abilities (chapter 5); biological determinism in the media (chapters 3 and 6); the “silencing” of adolescent girls (chapter 8); differences among diverse groups of women in the meaning of sexuality and body image, and implications for therapeutic treatment (chapters 9 and 15); the new reproductive technology and the medical, ethical, and legal issues it raises; woman-headed households; and socially created obstacles to mothering (all in chapter 11); a new synthesis of the costs and benefits of juggling work, family, and relationship roles (chapter 12); changing cultural views of menopause, and achievement in mid- and later life (chapter 13).

A companion reader, In Our Own Words: Readings on the Psychology of Women and Gender, provides thorough coverage of and commitment to the diversity of the female experience in 45 readings that are brief, engaging, and fun to read.
