Dr. Franklin visited Howard University earlier this month. He gave a powerful lecture; however, his lecture was not nearly as powerful as his book.

Even the Rat Was White, by Robert Guthrie, offers a historical perspective of psychology that is often over looked. Guthrie, a well-respected American Psychologist, traces the origins of racial discrimination throughout the history of psychology in his exact and often witty rhetoric. Guthrie begins his text with the history and evolution of the concept of race and how it affected early psychology and anthropology. The second portion of Guthrie's book provides a more personal look at the struggles faced by those trying to break through the racial boundaries within psychology.
The perspective Guthrie offers in Even the Rat Was White is critical to the history of psychology. All too often throughout the history of many academic disciplines the story of minorities has been over looked, without such histories academia can never hope to preserve an accurate account of its history. Guthrie has successfully captured a piece of history that is necessary to the accurate portrayal of the history of psychology in America.

A Jew in a violently anti-Semitic world, Sigmund Freud was forced to cope with racism even in the "serious" medical literature of the fin de siècle, which described Jews as inherently pathological and sexually degenerate. In this provocative book, Sander L. Gilman argues that Freud's internalizing of these images of racial difference shaped the questions of psychoanalysis. Examining a variety of scientific writings, Gilman discusses the prevailing belief that male Jews were "feminized," as stated outright by Jung and others, and concludes that Freud dealt with his anxiety about himself as a Jew by projecting it onto other cultural "inferiors"--such as women. Gilman's fresh view of the origins of psychoanalysis challenges those who separate Freud's revolutionary theories from his Jewish identity.

Hiroshima: A Warning for Today! 4 out of 5 stars.

On August 6th, 1945 Hiroshima, Japan became the first city to be destroyed by an atomic weapon. Three days later, Nagasaki suffered a second atomic attack. On August 14th, Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced he was planning to surrender. A Japanese delegation signed the instrument of surrender on the deck of the battleship Missouri September 2nd, 1945. These facts are known to almost every school child. What is not known is what happened to the survivors. Author Robert Jay Lifton attempts to explain both the physical and psychological effects in this work.

He begins with a description of the physical effects. Survivors, called "hibakusha" meaning, "explosion affected person(s) vividly describe the blast, heat, and radiation effects on themselves and others. However psychologist, Lifton, devotes the majority of this work to the psychological effects that received little attention. Hibakusha, developed several theories to cope with their experience:

1. Why us? We were a small city of limited military importance.
2. We were guinea pigs. The Americans wanted to test their new bomb. We were their lab rats.
3. Racial bias. They only use weapons like that on the colored races.
4. The people responsible will suffer divine retribution for their actions.
5. We, the survivors, have a mission to explain the horrors of nuclear war to the entire world!

Once militaristic Japan turned totally pacifistic after the war. However, Japan has never come to terms with its own misdeeds in World War II, which explains the reactions of the survivors. The author also fails to acknowledge Japan has been able to divest itself of military expenditures only due to America's nuclear umbrella.

While reading I was struck by the similarity between hibakusha and Vietnam veterans. Both were traumatized by their experience. Both were ostracized by their countrymen after the war. Hibakusha were deemed incapable or unwilling to work due to "A-Bomb Disease." Viet vets were similarly shunned as being "walking time bombs" that might "flash back" at any moment. Pity them both, but hide the women and kids when they are around was/is the theory, thus adding to their difficulties.

This work is the first to explore the psychological and sociological aspects of the attack. In a world that is seemingly losing its horror of "weapons of mass destruction" since World War I, it is important to review as terrorists now strive openly to acquire chemical and nuclear weapons. My last criticism is, toward the end, Lifton, is seemingly writing to fellow psychologists, instead of laymen such as myself. Still, it is an important and very informative work. Highly recommended!

Good book for psychologists, sociologists, anthropoligists. 4 out of 5 stars.

If youre a casual reader of cultural science, this book might come across as very dense and slow-reading. But if you are already familiar with basic cultural and evolutionary psychology theory, you could find this an interesting read. The book begins by outlining connectivist (spreading activation) models of neurology, and tries to apply them to cultural schemas. The chapters are divided between "case-study" chapters that use a particular event or set of interviews to examine one particular schema style in detail, and more theory minded chapters. The case-study chapters were more interesting and illuminating in my opinion. This book would do well if paired with the "Selfways" research paper by Kitayama and Markus, or paired with a book like 'The Moral Animal' which offers a totally different biological basis for cultural drives in psychology.

"Culture" and "meaning" are central to anthropology, but anthropologists do not agree on what they are. Claudia Strauss and Naomi Quinn propose a new theory of cultural meaning, one that gives priority to the way people's experiences are internalized. Drawing on "connectionist" or "neural network" models as well as other psychological theories, they argue that cultural meanings are not fixed or limited to static groups, but neither are they constantly revised or contested. Their approach is illustrated by original research on understandings of marriage and ideas of success in the United States.
