Editorial Review:

"These successful principals move beyond platitudes and optimistic denial and learn to face the facts of what is necessary to improve schools-then they do it. These star principals learn to work with teachers and their union rather than around them."
-Charles Taylor Kerchner, Hollis P. Allen Professor
Claremont Graduate University

"Links Collins's work to success in the school setting. The examples of school leaders who were able to lead effective, systemic change are powerful."
-Brenda Dean, Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Hamblen County Department of Education, TN

Editorial Review:

Reggie McNeal's bestseller The Present Future is the definitive work on the "missional movement," i.e., the widespread movement among Protestant churches to be less inwardly focused and more oriented toward the culture and community around them. In that book he asked the tough questions that churches needed to entertain to begin to think about who they are and what they are doing; in Missional Renaissance, he shows them the three significant shifts in their thinking and behavior that they need to make that will allow leaders to chart a course toward being missional: (1) from an internal to an external focus, ending the church as exclusive social club model; (2) from running programs and ministries to developing people as its core activity; and (3) from professional leadership to leadership that is shared by everyone in the community. With in-depth discussions of the "what" and the "how" of transitioning to being a missional church, readers will be equipped to move into what McNeal sees as the most viable future for Christianity. For all those thousands of churches who are asking about what to do next after reading The Present Future, Missional Renaissance will provide the answer.

A Good Intermediate Text 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is best for those who have already read a couple of books on leadership, particularly those by Warren Bennis and James MacGregor Burns since these two figure's ideas are present in many of this book's pages. That is not to say there are no new paths taken. Sashkin and Rosenbach's "A New Vision of Leadership" is eye-opening in its redefinition of transformational leadership. This essay also does well in illustrating the differences between leadership and management, a division I was not sure existed until I picked up this book. Payne, Fuqua, and Canegami's "Women as Leaders" was equally fresh and eye-opening. This is a good book to read to start developing more complex ways of looking at leadership.

Editorial Review:

Leadership—and leadership studies—are in flux. In the revised and updated fourth edition of this acclaimed text, contributors speak directly to the central points of change: leadership vs. management; leadership and followership; and especially, the diversity of leadership styles and pathways. Tapping the wisdom of classic articles and fifteen new readings, William Rosenbach and Robert Taylor present a renewed framework for understanding leaders and leadership from a contemporary perspective. Opportunity, vision, empowerment, action, values, and timing are essential ingredients in the new paradigm of leadership outlined here. Further, the fourth edition represents a significant shift in perspective on leadership studies—it examines the ways in which diversity of intellect, as well as other forms of diversity, represents the quintessential competitive advantage of the late ’90s and beyond.

Coaching Post-modern and Missional Leaders 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

TransforMissional Coaching adds to a growing collection of books on coaching in ministry. The book's unique contributions are around coaching Post-modern leaders, coaching from a holistic missional mind-set, and coaching out of character and relational authority.

Steve Ogne and Tim Roehl are long-time coaches and church planting practitioners. Over the years their coaching has shifted from those planting "come unto us" churches, to those who are post-modern and missional. Their collective experience is detailed in this treasure chest filled with ministry coaching gems.

The authors advocate a hands-on approach to coaching that is both relational and experiential. A coach is not an advisor-teacher, as many who find themselves helping others often behave. Nor is a coach a passive sounding board who only listens and asks questions. A coach cares, celebrates, and challenges, as well as listens. Two chapters focus on the coach's character and relational authority.

Reading the book, I imagine many leaders will feel challenged to advise less, listen more, and grow in asking excellent questions. Several chapters will specifically help in this regard. The authors provide teaching, inspiration, and examples for listening and asking great questions.

The book also serves as a toolbox of coaching helps. There are three models for holistic coaching, more than 200 sample questions (yes, I counted!), how to adapt your coaching style using DISC, how to effectively coach Post-modern leaders, and help on coaching teams.

Throughout the book the authors tell stories to illustrate various coaching situations. The stories paint a picture of a coaching relationship. I have heard both Ogne and Roehl coach and can tell you they practice what they preach - they listen, ask great questions, challenge according to the coachee's goals, and keep their advice to a minimum.

The subtitle of the book is "empowering leaders in a changing ministry world." Two facts we don't want to ignore: the ministry world is changing rapidly and empowering leaders is the only solution to adapt and make an impact. Ogne and Roehl provide us with important helps to re-skill to be more empowering and more missional.

Editorial Review:

Even leaders need leading. In the context of this greatly changing world, ministry experts Steve Ogne and Tim Roehl have coined the phrase "transformissional" to define the unique type of inspired coaching they offer to spiritual leaders in need of fresh direction.

"The path that the Lord of the Harvest has designed sometimes takes us beyond our comfort zone and off the map of our experience," they write. "We’ll help you understand how coaching helps leaders get traction and make progress in personal growth and ministry productivity. We’ll also help you become an effective coach so no matter where you find yourself—from church buildings to coffee shops to places you’ve never gone before—you can come alongside to help others live out their call and make a difference in their world."

Obviously Hillary campaign propaganda 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Amazon.com praises this book: "Her examples are fascinating and eclectic--including anecdotes about A-list leaders such as Hillary Clinton and Paramount Chair Sherry Lansing." Yes. Very eclectic? A Clinton and Hollywood? Hardly.

This book is obviously getting renewed interest in order to help the Hillary project. Women long ago closed the leadership gap in most fields. And Condi Rice has closed it at the national administration level.

Editorial Review:

Despite the common view that women already permeate every level of leadership in this country, in fact the United States ranks fifty-ninth in the world in terms of female political representation, and women lead only eight Fortune 500 companies. In this inspiring call-toaction, leading women’s advocate Marie C. Wilson explains why we need more women leading alongside men now, not just for the sake of fairness but for the larger social good. As Wilson argues, even as our nation sits on a world spinning with crises, we have barely begun to tap our most critical natural resource—women. Written with passion and insight, this handbook shows how we can all make a difference and finally close the leadership gap.

Please Read! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a must read for all those involved in Jewish leadership. Practical, educational AND entertaining. Anyone looking for guidance and fortitude in facing a community that is reluctant to be led by anyone will find company and strength in this book. As a wonderful combination of Jewish literacy and leadership development, you come away with many new ways of looking at the challenges you face. I only wish it was longer and more in-depth. Maybe there will be a part 2!

A Wonderful Teacher 5 out of 5 stars.

Brilliant Integration 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Brown has brilliantly integrated psychology, sociology, history, the Talmud, and the Bible. As an industrial psychologist, I have read hundreds of studies of leadership, and none of them integrated materials from such a wide range of sources..

Because Dr. Brown's target audience is current and future leaders of Jewish non-profit organizations, she discusses tasks that are generally neglected, such as building a sense of community, selecting and developing a successor, and enhancing spiritual principles. To help her readers to perform these tasks she discusses a wider range of subjects than I have ever seen in this type of book: vision, mentoring, authenticity, optimism, transformation, developing women leaders, conflict resolution, ethics, and the relationship between changing oneself and changing others.

My only criticism is the title. It suggests that the book will help only leaders of Jewish non-profit organizations, but it has valuable lessons for nearly all leaders and wannabes. If I were still teaching in a business school, I would certainly have my students read it.

If you want to become a better leader, my advice is very simple: Buy it.

Building communication on and off the job 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Kevin Eikenberry's book "Remarkable Leadership" has been a transformational read as I try to incorporate many of the leadership methods into my job and personal life. While I have tried to find information about various parts of leadership and communication from a variety of different mediums, it was with great pleasure that Eikenberry's book brought together views on the topic from many different sources.

"Remarkable Leadership" is one of the most authentic leadership books that I have come across, as evidenced by Eikenberry's willingness to reference other sources throughout his work. It is as if Eikenberry understands that there isn't always one perfect way to be a leader, but that there are several aspects to the role. Those feelings are evidenced from start to finish, especially with his "Now Steps".

The "Now Steps" are fantastic, and encourage immediate use of the tactics discussed. I found them especially helpful, since there are many aspects covered in each chapter and each category of Eikenberry's 12 leadership qualities. The "Now Steps" help secure the information and encourage a reader uncomfortable with one aspect of communication to take positive steps and put the practices into work. The steps provide a blueprint to follow without mandating that all of the methods are incorporated to be successful.

This book is also my first truly dual-platform experience, and I am not sold on that aspect. As a member of the "old-school" way of thinking, I expect all of the information to be present in the book that I am reading. It was a new experience to have some of Eikenberry's valuable information limited to the internet. I visited the Web site and downloaded some of the "Bonus Bytes", but did not enjoy having to take those steps to find out more about a topic I was interested in.

Taken as a whole, I would highly recommend "Remarkable Leadership" to anyone interested in improving not only their leadership abilities, but communication in general. So much of what is discussed by Eickenberry easily transitions to use away from work. I still count Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People," as the most influential book I have ever read, but Eikenberry has put me on a similar path by encouraging the use of his methods much more effectively than other books on the topic.

Remarkable Leadership is a fine work, and I intend to continue following Eikenberry's methods for insight into both my professional and personal communication.

Editorial Review:

Remarkable Leadership is a practical handbook written for anyone who wants to hone the skills they need to become an outstanding leader. In this groundbreaking book, Kevin Eikenberry outlines a framework and a mechanism for both learning new things and applying current knowledge in a thoughtful and practical way. Eikenberry provides a guide through the most important leadership competencies, offers a proven method for learning leadership skills, and shows approaches for applying these skills in today’s multitasking and overloaded world of work. The book explores real-world concerns such as focus, limited time, incremental improvement, and how we learn.

Para los que viven en guerra 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Lecciones vitales 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Editorial Review:

Is it possible that the division between the clergy and the laity is unnecessary and, in fact, harmful to the church? In Organic Leadership, Neil Cole fervently says yes. But rather than doing away with the clergy, Cole argues that the answer is to raise up organically grown leaders from ordinary Christians and make everyone "clergy." Using examples from modern cinema, personal experience, and the Bible, Cole sets out to change our view of what a leader is and how one is formed. This fresh and revolutionary alternative will transform readers and equip them to challenge themselves and others to find the vision God has for them.
