Editorial Review:

A seminal work onhuman behavior in the workplace—now completely updated

"At last! We have all been quoting Maslow for years and to now have such an excellent compilation of his seminal thoughts on management and organization comes like a timely gift from heaven. The values and principles he taught decades ago are even more relevant today." —Stephen Covey, author, The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People.

"Maslow's book is a readable, impressionistic masterpiece that extolled the virtues of collaborative, synergistic management decades ahead of its time. This edition reveals just how much the management thinkers of our day, including Peter Drucker, W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Senge, owe to Maslow, and how much, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, management can still learn from his insights." —Andrea Gabor, author, The Man Who Discovered Quality.

"Maslow's brilliant and humane perspectives are made easily accessible in this exceptional book. It's also quite humbling—why haven't we yet actualized the truths about human nature and the nature of work?" —Margaret J. Wheatley, author, Leadership and the New Science and A Simpler Way.

"Maslow's profound concept of self-actualization could generate a Copernican Revolution of work and society, catapulting us out of what future generations will look back on as the dark ages of management." —Jim Collins, coauthor, Built to Last.

"In an age of self-directed teams, team-based improvement, and enterprisewide knowledge management, Maslow's concept of enlightened economics, resonates more today than when he originally formulated his ideas." —John Peetz, Chief Knowledge Officer, Ernst & Young LLP.

"Abraham Maslow's vision on living with ambiguity and lack of structure are profound. His humility as a scientist never let him take credit for his incredible insight into the future of business structure, let alone the value of work itself. Now, we can correct this error." —Watts Wacker, Resident Futurist, SRI International; founder, FirstMatter LLC; author, The 500 Year Delta.

"Proper management of the work lives of human beings, of the way in which they earn their living, can improve them and improve the world and in this sense be a utopian or revolutionary technique." —Abraham Maslow.

The pioneer behind the hierarchy of needs and the concept of self-actualization, Dr. Abraham Maslow was—and is—one of the world's most esteemed experts on human behavior and motivation. However, while perhaps most famous for his work in the area of humanistic psychology, his legacy of work encompasses much more, extending into the realms of business and management. Having explored and studied the relationship between human behavior and the work situation, Maslow translated the science of the mind into the art of management=an important interpretation first published in the far-sighted treatise, Eupsychian Management, and whose impact continues to be felt today. Now, this seminal work has been updated, primed to introduce new readers to—and reacquaint old admirers with—what some have called the renowned psychologist's best book.

Bringing into perspective the lasting impact of Maslow's groundbreaking principles, Maslow on Management illustrates how they have withstood the test of time to become integral components of current management practices, such as continuous improvement, Theory X, and empowerment. Offering insight into using these and other tools to effectively tackle present-day business situations, from heightened competitiveness to globalization to emerging technologies, Maslow on Management covers a wealth of timeless topics, including:

  • Self-actualization—the freedom to effectuate one's own ideas, try things out, make decisions, and make mistakes
  • Synergy—what is beneficial for the individual is beneficial for everyone; individual success should not occur at the expense of others; align organizational goals with personal goals
  • Enlightened management policy—assume that all your people have the impulse to achieve; everyone prefers to be a prime mover rather than a passive helper; everyone wants to feel important, needed, useful, successful, and proud; there is no dominance-subordination hierarchy.

To complement Dr. Maslow's original writings and to demonstrate how his forward-thinking ideas are being played out in today's business world, Maslow on Management features interviews with Perot Systems Chairman Mort Meyerson, Non-Linear Systems founder Andrew Kay, Esalen Institute founder Michael Murphy, and other prominent figures who provide incisive commentary on subjects ranging from creativity in business to leadership lessons for the digital age.

Epitomizing the genius of its author and embodying his elegant ruminations, Maslow on Management is still as important as it was when it first appeared. A true classic, this is essential reading for all managers.

Not as funny as Dilbert because it's serious 1 out of 5 stars.

Ten years ago, I worked for a company which was in the midst of a culture crisis. Part of this crisis was due to the owner's insistence on managing from afar and not allowing skilled managers to make decisions based on local needs. This crisis came to a head when the owner met the author of this book on a ski - lift.

The main premise of the author's "philosophy" is this: people play(read: work) harder during their time off than they do at their jobs. [I'm alright with this part.] The reason being, according to the author, is that nobody keeps score at work. This, of course, is patently ridiculous. Almost every company keeps score on their employees in some way and most of us enjoy 'sports' in our off-time that don't keep score.

The author was brought in to train us in his "method'. Keep in mind that we already had complex yearly reviews and most managers were selected after they had met certain criteria in personality tests. Some people may be intrigued by the author's writing but his personal style is boorish. He typically ate while he lectured and his constant reliance on record - breaking sports events as an example of what people at work should do every day not only alienated non - sports minded people but showed the second major weakness in his philosophy. Guys get paid millions of dollars for getting a hit 30% of the time - not grand slams every time they come up to bat. But that was the author's next premise - that we had to perform these types of record feats everyday. (This strategy is not restricted merely to the author, sadly, but seems to be a major strategy of most US companies.)

The author had a difficult time with me especially as most of my hobbies involve physical activities in which one does not keep score - surfing, hiking, gardening, etc. I actually argued the contrary to the author's philosophy - that people actually played harder than they worked precisely because no one was keeping score when they played, as I stated above. However, discussing this with the author was like the narrator of "This Is Spinal Tap" questioning the notion of 'this one goes to 11' with Nigel. The author just kept repeating his litany about needing to keep score.

We started measuring anything that could be measured - this was keeping score. Then, because they could be measured they had to be reduced. Things that were vital to the integrity of the product were cut back on in order 'to win'. The product (and product reputation)was damaged and some of the better people soon left the company. Eventually, we careened into other changes in company philosophy and left this "Game" behind. Sadly, none of these philosophies helped- but that is another matter.

This author's work is dreck. You would do better to read Scott Adams and do exactly the opposite of Catbert, Ratbert, and the Pointy - Haired Boss. Make it interesting, make it fun, treat people with respect and people will work hard. They may still work harder at play but that is probably human nature. After all, there are words for "work" and "play" - they are not one. Keeping score doesn't really play into it.

Editorial Review:

Since the latter part of the century just past, Stanley Bing has been exploring the relationship between authority and madness. In one bestselling book after another, reporting from his hot-seat as an insider in a world-renowned multinational corporation, he has tried to understand the inner workings of those who lead us and to inquire why they seem to be powered, much of the time, by demons that make them obnoxious and dangerous, even to themselves.

In What Would Machiavelli Do?, Bing looked at the issue of why mean people do better than nice people, and found that in their particular form of insanity lay incredible power. In Throwing the Elephant: Zen and the Art of Managing Up, he offered a spiritual path toward managing the unruly executive beast. And in Sun Tzu Was a Sissy, he taught us how to become one of them, and wage war on the playing field that ends in a dream home in Cabo. Now he returns to his roots to offer the last word on the entity that shapes our lives and stomps through—and on—our dreams: The Crazy Boss.

Students of Bing—and there are many, secreted inside tortured organizations, yearning for blunt instruments with which to fight—will note that he has walked this ground before, looking for answers. In 1992, he published the first edition of Crazy Bosses, which was fine, as far as it went. Now, some 15 years and several dozen insane bosses later, he has updated and rethought much of the work. Back in the last century, Bing was a small, trembling creature, looking up at those who made his life miserable and analyzing the mental illness that gave them their power. Today, while still trembling much of the time, he is in fact one of those people his prior work has warned us against. His own hard-won wisdom and now institutionalized dementia make this new edition completely fresh and indispensable to anyone who works for somebody else or lives with somebody else, or would like to.

In short, Bing is back on his home turf in this funny, true, and essential book, peering with his keen and frosty eye at the crazy boss in all his guises: the Bully, the Paranoid, the Narcissist, the Wimp, and the self-destructive Disaster Hunter. If you loved the original, classic Crazy Bosses, you'll be thrilled to plunge back into the new, refurbished pool. If you are new to the book, strap yourself in: it's going to be a crazy ride.

Confusing 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As I started to read this book the introduction seemed to be a conclusion summing up all the chapters to come. Entering into the first chapter left me frustrated because it also cited from the other chapters. I feel that I should be reading this book backwards, perhaps then I wouldn't be so confused. Perhaps if you can get through the first part of this book it gets better, good luck.

Not a good book on NLP, nor a good book on work/business 1 out of 5 stars.
38 of 47 people found this review helpful.

Oh dear. I thought long and hard about whether I should write a review on this book.

Clearly work has gone into writing it and I did pay quite a few dollars for it, so I really wish it had been good.

But no, I have to be honest, I think it has done more to turn me off the subject of NLP than even the most skeptical write-ups on the subject.

I was looking for a book that would give me a proper guide to NLP skills I could use in the workplace or business.

This neither explained properly or simply the NLP skills, nor their application in business.

It did make an attempt, but it did the worst possible thing it could - it bored the hell out of me.

To say that NLP is meant to be software for your brain, the science and practice of human excellence and is said to be as potentially limitless as the imagination itself, this book bored my socks off.

Sorry, but I found it so dry and dull.

None of the techniques, theories, etc, seemed to be very practical or hang together, it just seems to go from one subject to another with no accumulation of value or learning, which is ironic because that is what NLP is meant to be about.

I'm no expert, but I can tell you that one of the first books I ever read on NLP doesn't go into all the dull as dishwater complexities that this book does, but it has 100 times the value. That book is Change Your Life in Seven Days by Paul McKenna (see my review). It doesn't actually even mention NLP but contains all the useful techniques without the dullness of this work, and it's much cheaper, too, with a free recorded guided mind reprogramming session which is the true power of NLP in action.

Back to this book - it seems to have little application in business and is pushing a bright and frothy agenda. Well business isn't all like that. Alot of the time it's tough stuff and I can't see anything here helping even remotely.

Yes, I know all that stuff about mirroring and matching the language and gestures of the other person, but really, unless you are extremely quick, the transactions between people are so subtle that you are not exactly likely to get some negotiation breakthrough of massive proportions by the means described here.

I have since discovered a number of books that are much more effective in outlining persuasion/negotation and communication techniques in business and blow this book out of the water.

As I say, it put me off NLP for some time. However, from other books I have seen some merit in the subject and I still have some interest in it.

I have checked out a book on Amazon called Introducing NLP and have only read the searchable pages online.

However, those few pages seemed to give more clear and compact info than the first 250 pages of NLP at work.

Even the subject matter in NLP at Work is just poorly applied to business. Modelling is apparently just copying what someone else does to get the same effect. Well I learnt how to do that at school, and it's not that revolutionary a concept.

And meta-messages. What is the overall message a business is trying to give? This is not a meta-message. This is known as corporate image/identity and again is not a revolutionary concept.

If you need tips from this book on it, in the very brief way it is mentioned, then you are probably sunk already.

The only slightly redeeming part is that the section on anchoring is reasonably well described.

However, I think this book needs to decide what it is trying to be.

If you want to give a business person, who is fresh to the subject, the tools of NLP to use in a business setting, you have to come from a business perspective.

That perspective is a practical one. One that doesn't have time to trawl through all the hokey-pokey that is dragged through here.

After all, NLP is meant to be about what works. And this book sure doesn't work for me!

Editorial Review:

Popularized by such motivational writers and speakers as Anthony Robbins, NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) is considered one of the hottest techniques for accelerating learning, mastering thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and breaking out of habits and patterns of behavior that stifle creativity and fulfillment. This long-awaited new edition cuts through the jargon to introduce the basic techniques for gaining control of one's business and personal life.

Whether you are looking for a few good tips to keep a good thing going or need to recapture the very essence of a productive workplace, The Invisible Employee provides valuable lessons nestled among the pages of a clever and compelling story. This is a culture no organization can afford to be without."

Editorial Review:

This book provides an up-to-date review of commonly undertaken methodological and statistical practices that are sustained, in part, upon sound rationale and justification and, in part, upon unfounded lore. Some examples of these 'methodological urban legends' as we refer to them in this book are characterized by manuscript critiques such as: 'your self-report measures suffer from common method bias'; 'your item-to-subject ratios are too low'; 'you can't generalize these findings to the real world'; and, 'your effect sizes are too low'.Historically, there is a kernel of truth to most of these legends, but in many cases that truth has been long forgotten, ignored or embellished beyond recognition. This book examines several such legends. Each chapter is organized to address: what is the legend that 'we (almost) all know to be true'; what is the 'kernel of truth' to each legend; what are the myths that have developed around this kernel of truth; and, what should the state of the practice be. This book meets an important need for the accumulation and integration of these methodological and statistical practices.

Satisfactory Reviews of Career Development Theories 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Brown presents a very readable and thorough synopsis of various career development theories. A very useful tool for instructors of career development classes including undergraduate and graduate levels.

Editorial Review:

Including six new chapters on current advances in theory development and applications, this third edition explores a broad range of career development topics. Discussion includes: the reasons people choose their careers; how changes in interests, skills and motives occur throughout the life cycle; and how people do or do not change and adapt to their careers. The book then illustrates how to harness this knowledge to tailor career counselling and planning services to the distinct needs of clients from diverse backgrounds, at different stages of life and at various occupational levels.
