Editorial Review:

This comprehensive paperback book contains carefully chosen pieces that cover human behavior in organizations, from individual motivation to organizational processes. This anthology offers a broad mix of classic and recent articles; it covers emerging areas of interest such as business ethics and processes of creativity and change. This collection of readings is separated into four clearly defined dimensions: why and how we work; thinking and making decisions; interacting with others: social and group processes; and facing the future: creativity, innovation, and organizational leadership. An excellent resource for managers and other executives who need to know how to effectively lead their departments; this book provides the skills necessary for understanding the organization, and how power, influence, and interpersonal relations affect their businesses.

Longwinded And Poorly Organized 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I used this book in a graduate Human Factors course, and while I disliked it at first, I slowly grew to hate it. I give it two stars because it does, on occasion, contain good information, but more often than not is disjointed, poorly organized, and unfocused.

The book is essentially a collection of academic papers related to Human Factors in aviation (some are moderately tangential to the subject matter at hand), and as such it is really better suited for use as a reference book than as a text. It is further limited as a text by virtue of the fact that because most of the articles are extremely specialized, giant chunks of Human Factors considerations are left totally unaddressed.

I particularly disliked the contribution from Daniel E. Maurino, entitled "Crew Resource Management: A Time For Reflection." There are much better resources available on CRM (and now Threat and Error Management as well.) On the other end of the quality spectrum, the article by Giovanni Costa titled "Fatigue and Biological Rhythms" is an excellent account of the effects of fatigue on human performance, and emphasizes the importance of circadian desynchronosis in aviation safety. Most of the articles range between these two in quality, but these two stand out for me as the defining ends of the spectrum.

This book is valuable as a reference tool and for some very specialized pieces of knowledge. It is unsuitable for a survey course in Human Factors at any level, and an attempt to read it as a text is torturous at best. Combine the unsuitability as a text with the usurious price of $145.00 and this is one of the worst values around.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive source covering applications of human factors to aviation systems and operations, this handbook covers topics such as cabin staff and security, technical and navigational innovations, advances in communication, cost and time pressures on procurement, and new applications of automation. It covers human-macine relationships, cultural differences in practices and procedures, cognitive processes underlying human task performance, as well as maintenance, certification, verification and validation in the quest for even better system reliability. The handbook discusses major developments in aviation and in human factors, and foresees some of the further developments in this field.

Editorial Review:

Reflecting its author's extensive experience in the classroom, this beautifully crafted text expertly balances current theory and research with practical skills and applications. Its presentation reflects the author's belief that small group communication is best understood in context--whether in the workplace, in neighborhoods, in churches, social groups, or civic organizations. The thoroughly updated seventh edition cites more than one hundred recent studies.

Editorial Review:

“This is a very important book. It is an essential text for any graduate program in applied industrial and organizational psychology. The First Edition is the best text on the market today, and the Second Edition is a huge improvement. Nice work!”

Bill Attenweiler, Northern Kentucky University

Thoroughly updated and revised, this Second Edition is the only book currently on the market to present the most important and commonly used methods in human resource management in such detail. The authors clearly outline how organizations can create programs to improve hiring and training, make jobs safer, provide a satisfying work environment, and help employees to work smarter. Throughout, they provide practical tips on how to conduct a job analysis, often offering anecdotes from their own experiences.

New to the Second Edition:

  • New co-author Frederick P. Morgeson’s background in business management brings a valuable new perspective and balance to the presentation of material..
  • Expanded coverage is offered on O*NET, strategic job analysis, competencies and competency modeling, and inaccuracy in job analysis ratings.
  • New text boxes provide bio sketches of famous names in job analysis to put a personal face on research.
  • Additional examples and cases illustrate the “how-to” of job analysis in real-life settings.

Companion Website!

A companion website, http://jobandworkanalysis.com, offers instructors and students supplemental materials such as course syllabi, examples of data collected as part of a job analysis, task inventory data, the opportunity to practice data analysis, and much more!

the basics of creating visual art and much more 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

Cornell's well-structured course offers a satisfying combination of basics and exercises that serve to stimulate and encourage individual creativity. The instruction is suitable for beginners, but also has something to contribute for those whose study of art may be more advanced. Exercises guide the student through the basics of composition, painting, drawing, and creating with color pencils. Cornell's aim, however, goes beyond teaching the basics of art. The structure of the exercises includes meditation techniques designed to enhance creativity. Emphasis is placed on learning to use values from light to dark to create compositions that vibrate with light.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

When I purchased this book, I was looking for a book that would explain a bit about how to awaken my inner sight and creative energy, a bit about creating mandalas and a bit about beginning art since I have minimal experience with art or mandalas. This book is perfect! The exercises are simple, elegant and well explained. Judith Cornell is an inspiring author and teacher. I think this book would suit artists of any level who want to imbue their work with light, gain confidence and connect with their inner source of creativity.

Does not take a doctorate to come up with this stuff 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 24 people found this review helpful.

i had to read this book for a class and I found it to be one of the most superficial books I have ever read. By talking to the young singer and the horn player, they tell him everything, and he just restates everything they just said in a more positive light. He turns Brian, the horn player, into a paranoid schizophrenic, making him give names (ethel and fred and bob) to his pre-audition problems. I gleaned nothing from this book and I would not reccomend it to anyone. The book is simply a transcript of a whole bunch of conversations. . . Greene could have at least put a LITTLE effort into it. I'll sum the book up in a sentance or two . . . if your nervous, put it all in perspective, you'll move on if you don't get the part. You have ups and downs, sometimes are better than others. So when your nervous just take a deep breath and look at reality, not this junk about rating your talent and nervousness on a profile of 1 to 100. You can't measure that kind of thing on a scale. All in all, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK, you are wasting your time.

Editorial Review:

Audition Success presents a groundbreaking method that has already made Don Greene one of the country's leading audition trainers. Combining specially designed self-tests and real-life examples from the careers of two performers, Audition Success will help performers understand what prevents them from nailing an audition and give them the tools to reach their goals.

Writing uncomplicated but too theoretical 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I think that they should have presented a more applicable, rather than theoretical, approach to the foundations of work. However, it covered a variety of topics and the tables were superb.

Editorial Review:

Published in its First Edition 20 years ago, PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO WORK is the long-time market leader in the field of I/O psychology and has become the definitive standard for textbooks in this field. A significant revision, the Seventh Edition continues the text’s tradition of providing a highly readable and understandable framework for the teaching and learning of I/O psychology at the undergraduate level. Editorial Review:

A just culture protects people's honest mistakes from being seen as culpable. But what is an honest mistake, or rather, when is a mistake no longer honest? It is too simple to assert that there should be consequences for those who 'cross the line'. Lines don't just exist out there, ready to be crossed or obeyed. We-people-construct those lines; and we draw them differently all the time, depending on the language we use to describe the mistake, on hindsight, history, tradition, and a host of other factors. What matters is not where the line goes-but who gets to draw it. If we leave that to chance, or to prosecutors, or fail to tell operators honestly about who may end up drawing the line, then a just culture may be very difficult to achieve. The absence of a just culture in an organization, in a country, in an industry, hurts both justice and safety. Responses to incidents and accidents that are seen as unjust can impede safety investigations, promote fear rather than mindfulness in people who do safety-critical work, make organizations more bureaucratic rather than more careful, and cultivate professional secrecy, evasion, and self-protection. A just culture is critical for the creation of a safety culture. Without reporting of failures and problems, without openness and information sharing, a safety culture cannot flourish.Drawing on his experience with practitioners (in nursing, air traffic control and professional aviation) whose errors were turned into crimes, Dekker lays out a new view of just culture. This book will help you to create an environment where learning and accountability are fairly and constructively balanced.
