A milestone integration of applied pyschology 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Wickens' book, though slightly dated, provides an integrative review of applied psychological research that remains without peer. It offers students of engineering and design a solid theoretic pillar for the relevant psychological issues. Paired with an applications-oriented text of similar quality, one has much of the material needed for a graduate-level introduction to human factors engineering.

Editorial Review:

This book presents an intuitive understanding of how humans process information in the performance of tasks—highlighting the strengths and limitations, as well as methods, of performance. Equal emphasis is placed on the implications of these strengths and limitations for the design of equipment with which people interact, and for the design and training of work procedures. Chapter topics include spatial displays, language and communications, memory and training, decision making, selection of action, manual control, and stress and human error. Individuals interested in psychology will appreciate this book's reflection on the link between basic research and real-world applications.

Editorial Review:

The first edition of this popular casebook reflected the complexities and increasing litigiousness of the modern workplace and was designed to stimulate thought and discussion about ethical practice in industrial and organizational psychology. Since the book was published, the "APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct for Psychologists" has been revised and contains new material of particular relevance to organizational consultants. This second edition of the book has been updated to reflect the provisions of the new code. Illustrated by case examples based on real-life situations, this volume covers personnel selection, organizational diagnosis and intervention, consulting relationships, research and academic issues, professional training and certification, billing and marketing, and the ethics of professional behavior. "The Ethical Practice of Psychology in Organizations" makes ethical thinking come alive and belongs on the bookshelf of every I/O psychologist, human resource professional, and graduate student in I/O and business programs.

An outstanding guide, one that has long been needed. 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Just as our transportation system, like most complex systems, has grown ever more sophisticated, so have the means of investigating when those systems suffer failures. For years, a pronouncement of "human error" signaled the end of an accident investigation; now it often marks the beginning. It is no longer sufficient to conclude that an error occurred; investigators must now determine why it occurred and what can be done to prevent a recurrence. Yet surprisingly, there has been little in the training canon to prepare the accident investigator for this central function. That is, until now, because Dr. Barry Strauch has masterfully filled that gap. "Investigating Human Error: Incidents, Accidents, and Complex Systems" is that rarity in the literature of any discipline: a text that is thorough, well-organized and also a pleasure to read. Strauch is clearly at home in both the academic world and the gritty, high-stress environment that surrounds the investigator in the field. Each page of his book is informed by his years of experience as an investigator, an educator and a human factors psychologist. With the systematic, insightful approach presented by Strauch, complex systems are no longer impenetrable to the investigator; human error ceases to be a conundrum. Furthermore, Strauch's audience extends well beyond the ranks of investigators alone. His book will be profoundly appreciated by the people who work in airlines and other complex systems, by those who manage them and by those who analyze and regulate them. In fact, Strauch's work will be a compelling read for anyone who is fascinated and perplexed by humans failing to perform as they should in critical missions.

Editorial Review:

This is a paperbound reprint of a 2002 book. Utilizing aviation accidents for most of his examples, but stressing the applicability of the material to any investigation of the causes of human error in transportation and industrial systems, Strauch (psychology, George Mason U. and aviation management

This was a book that was assigned for class and its a good book. Supposedly the authors are the best in their field and know what they are talking about. I find that lots of things in the book doesnt really apply to me though. If you want to see how things are like from the employers point of view then this book is a great start.

Editorial Review:

Communication for Business and the Professionsemphasizes skills acquisition in the context of organizational communication theory and research. Based on the testimony and experience of successful managers in various fields, the text displays its emphasis on business and industry and the professions.

Editorial Review:

Between the winter of 2001 and the summer of 2002, Enron and Adelphia Communications filed for bankruptcy, and Tyco International was accused of evading sales tax totaling $1 million. Recently, the CEO of WorldCom was convicted in a federal court of an $11 billion dollar accounting fraud. Was this an unfortunate saga in corporate history or were the leaders of these companies unusually corrupt?

The disconcerting answer to that question, say Bob Hoyk and Paul Hersey in The Ethical Executive, is "No, these leaders are probably little different from us." Like us, they live in a world where there are always multiple causes for our actions. Our behavior is the result of a complex weave of situational factors, history and personality. Even if we have good ethical values to begin with, given certain situational pressures, we can all become unethical.

In this book, Hoyk and Hersey describe 45 "unethical traps" into which any one of us can fall. These traps, they say, can erupt in any organization environment. Some of these traps distort our perception of right and wrong—so we actually believe our unethical behavior is right. Many of them are psychological in nature, and if we're not aware of them they are like illusions—webs of deception. In their analysis, these traps significantly contributed to the large-scale corporate disasters we witnessed in recent years.

The authors take account of these realities, and offer a "real-world" method that will predict, preclude and, if necessary, "get us out of" these traps. Given the increased scrutiny under which all executives and mangers operate today, this book is a 'must read' for anyone who is charged with achieving an organization's mission – whether that mission is increasing profit, serving the common good, or both.

With practical advice and step-by-step exercises, learn how to use optimism to overcome setbacks and find inspiration and fulfilment in all areas of your life. The statistics on the power of optimism are staggering. Studies comparing pessimistic people with optimistic clearly show that optimists possess the ability (among other things) to excel academically, professionally and in sports, to resist infectious illness and fend off chronic disease, and to overcome setbacks in their life quickly and without fear. With its foundations firmly embedded in the scientific principles of cognitive behaviour, Learn to Be an Optimist suggests realistic ways for you to transform your life by opening your mind to a more positive attitude. Inspiring practical advice and step-by-step exercises help you to recognise and deal with problems based on them being temporary, specific and external, rather than expressions of any failure in you as a person. You will feel the benefits of this approach in the form of increased productivity in the workplace; improved personal and professional relationships; better physical and psychological health; and even prolonged life-expectancy.

Editorial Review:

What differentiates a "star" executive from his or her peers? This is no idle question because experts like Peter Drucker, Jim Collins, and Jack Welch agree that great talent builds great companies. So, finding and assembling a critical mass of the very best people should be the first priority of every business. But how do you recognize a star? What distinguishes them? Over the years, we've heard vague answers such as, "they are people with sound judgment, business smarts, or business acumen."But what do any of these terms really tell us?

Based on eight years of research on intelligence tests and cognitive skills, Executive Intelligence reveals the set of aptitudes that all brilliant leaders share. Dr. Justin Menkes, a renowned leadership expert, verified these findings through hundreds of interviews with senior executives, including thirty of the most celebrated CEOs in the world. Menkes discovered that just as great mathematicians share an exceptional facility for skills such as computation and deductive reasoning, great managers also have a certain set of cognitive skills that are at the heart of business acumen.

Managerial work can be broken down into three subjects: accomplishing tasks, working with other people, and self-evaluation. Within each of these categories there are identifiable cognitive skills that determine how well an executive performs, such as:

TASKS -- the abilities to properly define a problem, identify the highest-priority issues, and assess both what is known and what needs to be known in order to render a sound decision.

OTHERS -- the abilities to recognize underlying agendas, understand multiple perspectives, and anticipate likely emotional reactions.

SELF -- the abilities to identify one's own mistakes, encourage and seek out constructive criticism, and adjust one's own behavior.

Though these cognitive skills play a profound role in determining a manager's success, they are not what most employers focus on when recruiting or promoting executives. Instead, nearly everyone fixates on personality type, style, or other irrelevant characteristics. This book seeks to refocus attention on what really determines leadership aptitude.

What star leaders do is not magic. Their accomplishments are made possible by specific, identifiable skills that can be measured -- and learned. With a clear understanding of Executive Intelligence, managers can develop a means to improve their own performance as well as identify and cultivate the critical mass of talent their organizations so desperately seek.

Editorial Review:

A psychologist and leadership expert explains how to harness the right level of anxiety

Most of us see anxiety as a bad thing, so at the first sign of it we try to fight back or run away. But according to Robert Rosen, this outdated view ignores one of the most powerful forces in business: Anxiety helps us concentrate, learn, relate to people, think more creatively, and deliver better results.

Of course, too much anxiety causes fear, chaos, and loss of morale. But too little leads to stagnation and a false sense of security. It’s like a rubber band: If you pull it too hard, it breaks. If you don’t pull it hard enough, you fail to maximize its potential. Finding the happy medium between panic and passivity is the secret to success.

Drawing on twenty years of research with CEOs, Rosen explains how great leaders succeed by living and leading with just enough anxiety. He shows how the ability to manage anxiety brings out their own best performance, enables them to build great teams, and inspires and challenges their organizations.

Only when we allow ourselves to feel our insecurity, discomfort, confusion, and pain can we reach our potential, both as individuals and teams. Just Enough Anxiety offers practical guidance to all kinds of organizations, blending cutting-edge psychology with real-world stories of success.

A Must Read! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone wishing to delve into the mysteries of why we behave the way we do at work, the often unintended consequences of our actions, and ways we can overcome the ingrained habits that can sabotage our workplace success. While based almost entirely on Dr. Rowley's experience in a private company, I found her stories and insights quite germane to my work in the public sector. Dr. Rowley's conversational style made me feel as if I was on the couch with these Microsoft managers, working through their challenges and identifying creative solutions. While I am not a big fan of nonfiction books, particularly ones that deal with private sector moguls, I found I couldn't put this one down. If you are at all interested in the psychology of workplace relationships, this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

In this insightful book, Microsoft consulting psychologist Anna Rowley draws on fascinating case studies from her twelve years of working with the top levels of Microsoft management, revealing the skills that have helped the company's top executives to maintain market dominance. Rowley's tools have helped her powerhouse clients, who are passionately devoted to their jobs, attain their maximum potential while faced with constant pressure to innovate and excel. In Leadership Therapy, she explains how leaders can develop the characteristics they need to succeed in a demanding environment, including belief, objectivity, insight, connectivity, and ambition.
