Editorial Review:

What happens to ordinary people in times of war? Gregory Hadley explores this question as he documents the true story of a B-29 crew that was shot down over a rural Japanese village on July 20, 1945. Presented in narrative form, Hadley weaves a gripping tale drawn from recently declassified historical documents, never before seen photographs, and interviews with both Japanese eyewitnesses and survivors of the B-29 crew. Field of Spears is not simply the story of an incident that took place over half a century ago. It is a chilling reminder of what awaits today s soldiers when they fall into the waiting arms of terrified and angry civilians. Based upon several years of investigative research, Hadley uncovers the mystery that had surrounded this singular event in Niigata s history: How did the four crewmen who died that night actually perish? What sets Field of Spears apart from similar books of this genre is that Hadley has interviewed eyewitnesses from both sides of this incident, both villagers and former B-29 crewmen. He supplemented this with numerous documents and Japanese memoirs that he found in area, as well as reports that were recently declassified through the US Freedom of Information Act. A showpiece of the book is a series of never before seen photographs taken in Niigata that reveal, in gripping and sometimes gruesome detail, the capture and lynching of several crewmen. In a narrative style, Hadley follows the aftermath of the July 20th incident, first by detailing how villagers sought to cover up the events surrounding the crewmen s capture, the horrific experiences of the B-29 crewmen in captivity, the tepid efforts of war crimes investigators during the Occupation, and a study of the damaging effect the incident had upon on both the crewmen and villagers, all of whom were forgotten by their respective governments once the guns had fallen silent. Field of Spears is not simply a story of an incident that took place over half a century ago. As the wheel of history turns yet again, this book offers insight into human rights issues affecting our lives today, and provides a chilling reminder of what awaits today s soldiers when they fall from their positions of elevated safety into the waiting arms of an angry mob.

Editorial Review:

Norbert Troller's unique account of life in Theresienstadt combines his intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the camp with two dozen of his own drawings and watercolors. Troller recounts his two years in Theresienstadt from early 1942 until September 1944, when he was deported to Auschwitz after the Nazis discovered he and other artists were smuggling out drawings that revealed the horrors of Hitler's "model" ghetto. Miraculously preserved by his friends, Troller's drawings and watercolors of life inside Theresienstadt add a compelling dimension to his story. His keen observations of human nature, of the experiences of his fellow prisoners, and of his own existence are embedded within a powerful history of the Theresienstadt atrocities.

Editorial Review:

"On March 6, 1944, about two thousand orphans were rescued from Romanian concentration camps in Transnistria-Ukraine. I was one of them". So begins Ruth Gold's memoir, a story that illuminates and transcends survival. In 1941, eleven-year-old Ruth had become a helpless witness to the agonizing death of her father, then of her only brother, and finally of her mother - all within three weeks. They perished in Bershad, the largest and most famous of more than 100 concentration camps in Transnistria. Following her rescue, Ruth's journey took her to Cyprus, Israel, Colombia, the United States, and finally back to visit her hometown, Czernowitz, and the camp at Bershad. Combining historical events with an intensely personal narrative of her life before, during and after the Holocaust, Ruth Gold has created a memorial to the Jews of Transnistria. Moreover, the courageous spirit of her life, despite her shattering psychological and physical traumas, conveys a message to those who contemplate meaning in the Holocaust.

Editorial Review:

What Britain refined, America defined. Assembled by two key figures at the heart of the movement and told through the voices o musicians, artists, iconoclastic reporters and entrepreneurial groupies, PLEASE KILL ME is the full decadent story of the American punk scene, through the early years of Andy Warhol's Factory to the New York underground of Max's Kansas City and later, its heyday at CBGB's, spiritual home to the Ramones, Talking Heads, Television and Blondie. PLEASE KILL ME goes backstage and behind apartment doors to chronicle the sex, drugs and power struggles that were the very fabric of the American punk community, to the time before piercing and tattoos became commonplace and when every concert, new band and fashion statement marked an absolute first. From Iggy Pop and Lou Reed to the Clash and the Sex Pistols (the first time around), Mc Neil and Mc Cain document a time of glorious self-destruction and perverse innocence - possibly the last time so many will so much fun in the pursuit of excess.

Editorial Review:

At the end of June 1941, Latvia fell into the hands of the Germans. Within months, the command was given to "evacuate" the Jews of the Riga ghetto. Armed gangs of Latvians and Germans forced their way into Jewish homes, startling the occupants out of their sleep and shooting them in their beds. On streets, in shops, and in factories, the Jews of Riga were hunted down. Men and women, children, and the elderly were driven into groves on the outskirts of town, forced to dig mass graves or stand over those already dug, and shot by the hundreds of thousands. Bernhard Press was one of the few to survive. This book is Press's account of life and death during the Nazi reign of terror in Latvia. In direct, unadorned prose, Press describes his escape from the Riga ghetto, his three years in hiding with the family of a friend, and the further trials that awaited the surviving Jews of Riga when Latvia was "liberated" by the Russians. Recounting his own harrowing experience and detailing the plight of Eastern European Jews faced with the anti-Semitism of their homelands, the Germans, and the Soviets, in The Murder of the Jews in Latvia Press recovers a lost chapter in the literature of the Holocaust. The book is both a compelling memoir and an important historical document.

Editorial Review:

In tracing the process through which monuments give rise to collective memories, this path-breaking book emphasizes that memorials are not just inert and amnesiac spaces upon which individuals may graft their ever-shifting memories. To the contrary, the materiality of monuments can be seen to elicit a particular collective mode of remembering which shapes the consumption of the past as a shared cultural form of memory. In a variety of disciplines over the past decade, attention has moved away from the oral tradition of memory to the interplay between social remembering and object worlds. But research is very sketchy in this area and the materiality of monuments has tended to be ignored within anthropological literature, compared to the amount of attention given to commemorative practice. Art and architectural history, on the other hand, have been much interested in memorial representation through objects, but have paid scant attention to issues of social memory. Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary in scope, this book fills this gap and addresses topics ranging from material objects to physical space; from the contemporary to the historical; and from ‘high art’ to memorials outside the category of art altogether. In so doing, it represents a significant contribution to an emerging field.
