Glimpse into Iron Age life and ritual 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 31 people found this review helpful.

P. V. Glob's BOG PEOPLE is a concise and illuminating study of several exquisitly preserved bodies of Iron Age inhabitant discovered northern Denmark by peat diggers in the early 1950s.

Glob, who was on the scene soon after the bodies were discovered, describes the remarkable condition of the bodies, then proceeds to explore the circumstances of their deaths. Glob's exposition gives us a look into the practice of ritual sacrifice in Iron Age northern Europe. Enhancing his discussion with studies of their last meals, the manner of death, the clothes and jewelry they wore as well as other bog artifacts, Glob introduces us to a brutal world where ritual sacrifice played a critical role in the spiritual life of Iron Age residents of modern day Denmark.

The photographs and x-rays of the bodies are stunning. In particular, the haunting photos of the serene, delicately preserved Tolland man cast this study in an earthy yet unearthly light.

Editorial Review:

From time to time workers in bogs throughout Europe accidentally expose the sunken bodies of people who died 2000 or more years ago. The bo g waters have kept the bodies from decay, sometimes even preserving the facial expression at the moment of death, and many of the bodies bear signs of violent ends. This book seeks to cast light on these Iron Age people, their lives, their religion, and the rituals they performed in unfrequented wood and groves.

THIS IS A GOOD OVERVIEW OF THE CELITIC PEOPLES. THEIR 'RACE' PER SE, COVERED A VERY VAST AREA IN EUROPE AND BEYOND. THERE ARE MANY INTERESTING FACTS THAT I'D NEVER HEARD OF UNTIL I READ THIS BOOK. THERE MAY BE OTHERS THAT ARE MORE THOROUGH, BUT STILL, I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK. THERE ARE NICE PHOTOS AS WELL, AND A NICE SEGMENT AT THE START OF THE BOOK ABOUT THE 'PEAT BOG MUMMIES'!!

Editorial Review:

The surprising story of three ambitious men and how their clash of egos, ignorance, and imaginations led to the discovery of the Ice Age.

Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), extraordinary Swiss scientist and professor, conceived of the Ice Age and then spent decades trying to persuade other scientists he had not gone mad. Charles Lyell (1797-1875) was his century's most influential geologist and a master politician among his fellow scientists. His scientific principles said an Ice Age was impossible, even after his eyes showed him it was real. Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857), an adventurer trapped for two winters at the top of Greenland, wrote a poetic description of a harsh and frozen landscape. His reports portrayed previously unimaginable great ice and set the stage for the story's unexpected outcome.

The discovery of the Ice Age is one of science's greatest and least-known stories. Like James Watson's The Double Helix and Dava Sobel's Longitude, The Ice Finders shows that, for all their boasting about reason, scientists are driven by their passions and obsessions--human traits that actually advance the evolution of scientific discovery.

The BIG PICTURE 4 out of 5 stars.

Imagine.. History making sense! In his Second book in the "Lost Continent of Mu" series, Col. Churchward vies to piece together one of the greatest mysteries this world has ever known: our own history. He tracks the eastward and westward lines of migration of great civilizations from the "Lost Continent of Mu", and examines their similarities, their downfalls, and makes a bit of sense out of the way the world now stands. The old Colonel will explain the founding, approximate dates, and determine the descendants from Atlantis to Egypt to India to North/South America to Europe, and more. He also examines the origins of the historical ancient civilizations including the ancient Greeks, Persians, Babylonians, Mayas, Egyptians, and more. Although there is a bit of racial stereotyping, it mostly serves to track down the descendants of these great civilizations, thus providing an ancient point of reference for the examination of the way these cultures have evolved through the ages. All in all, I think it is a fantastic work, whether you choose to believe it or not.

Editorial Review:

1931. This volume provides the origins and original meanings of Mu. If you're looking for thorough... 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

...this is what you need. Covering Egypt from the landmass's geological foundation right up to the end of the predynastic era. It's been freshly updated by Ian Shaw to include all of the latest arguments, especially with respect to the Paleolithic and Predynastic periods. Most Egyptologists, amateur and otherwise, will only be interested in the last two or three chapters and, in fairness, each chapter uses the lingo of the relevant field, obfuscating it to the average reader. Nonetheless, I can't think of another book which rivals this one for what it offers.

Editorial Review:

This books covers the history of the Nile Valley from Nubia to the Mediterranean, during the period from the earliest hominid settlement, around 700,000 BC to the beginnings of dynastic Egypt at the end of the fourth millennium BC.

Editorial Review:

When a melting Swiss glacier recently revealed the body of a hunter millennia old, the world sat up and took notice. Here, in his well-preserved arrows, tools, and leather garments (not to mention his own remains) was a rare glimpse of life in prehistoric Europe, and it captured the public imagination. Elsewhere more obvious remnants of the pre-classical past have long been objects of fascination: the megaliths of northwestern Europe, the palaces of Crete, the mysterious cave paintings of France. Now archeologist Barry Cunliffe and a team of distinguished experts shed light on this astonishing, long-silent world in a comprehensive and lavishly illustrated account.
Ranging from the earliest settlements through the emergence of Minoan civilization to the barbarian world at the end of the Roman Empire, The Oxford Illustrated Prehistory of Europe provides a fascinating look at how successive cultures adapted to the landscape of Europe. In synthesizing the diverse findings of archeology, the authors capture the sweeping movements of peoples, the spread of agriculture, the growth of metal working, and the rise and fall of cultures. They provide intriguing insight on the Minoan and the Mycenean past underlying classical Greek history, and on the disasters that destroyed Minoan civilization. They explore the increasingly sophisticated societies of northern Europe, revealing surprisingly far-reaching trade between different areas. The peoples of Bronze Age Denmark, for instance, sent amber to Germany in return for scarce metal, while new technologies spread widely across the continent. The book continues through the end of the Roman Empire, exploring the barbarian world beyond Rome's northern frontier.
For centuries, we knew little of the European civilizations that preceded classical Greece or arose outside of the Roman Empire, beyond ancient myths and the writings of Roman observers. Now the most recent discoveries of archeology have been synthesized into one exciting volume. Featuring hundreds of stunning photographs (many in full color), this book provides the most complete account available of the prehistory of European civilization.

Editorial Review:

Beneath the rollings seas lie the mysteries of forgotten civilizations. Swept by the tides, half buried by the sands, worn away by terrific pressure are the remnants of a culture little known to our age. Where the mighty Pacific now sweeps majestically for thousands of miles, there was once a vast continent. This land was known as Lemuria, and its people as Lemurians.

In this book you will learn the incredible truth about the Lemurian race, their civilization's high development, their advanced technology, their deep comprehension of psychic and spiritual laws, and how their civilization was utterly destroyed. Yet the vast knowledge they possessed was not lost but has been preserved - kept alive in the hearts and minds of a sacred group today. Will our present civilization benefit from these inspiring, spiritual truths? This book reveals these things in a way you will never forget.

California and the West Coast of the United States were once part of the vast continent of Lemuria. From early times, legends and myths have circulated about California's mountain of mystery - Shasta - linking it with an ancient, forgotten people and a great sunken continent to the west. Is Mt. Shasta the repository of the remnants of Lemurian civilization? What do the strange rock-carved symbols in the Shasta region reveal about an ancient civilization swept from the face of the earth, except for surviviors who live among us today?

Now you can witness the evidence and experience the glory that was Lemuria in Wishar S. Cerve's captivating book.

Editorial Review:

Generations after generations have been living and dying on this planet for millions and millions of years. These ancestors have built societies, created cultures, and produced technologies. Yet many questions still remain about our ancestry and what relevance, if any, these past cultures hold for us.
Patterns in Prehistory takes an in-depth look at humankind's first three million years. From the origins of early hominids several million years ago to the evolution of the first great states and civilizations, this comprehensive survey of world prehistory also confronts important philosophical issues about the study of the past. The author reflects on the archaeological methods and theories of the 1960s and 70s while reviewing the methodological revisions of the 80s and 90s, relating the archaeological data from hundreds of sites to the great questions of prehistorical change. He focuses on the four great transformations in the history of our genus: the evolution of culture itself; the first appearance of us, Homo Sapiens; the evolution of agriculture; and the first appearances of cultural and social complexity in the form of the great civilizations of antiquity.
Thoroughly revised and updated, this fourth edition incorporates the most recent archaeological discoveries and addresses the insights and limitations of the new wave of "post-processual" or "cognitive" archaeology. It incorporates the latest research, particularly the new discoveries in Mesoamerican sites, Peru, southwest Asia, and Egypt, as well as new scholarship and theories on the origins of complex societies. Wenke also places more emphasis on gender, race, ideology, and religion. Ideal for courses in world prehistory and archeology, this new edition has been shortened to be more accessible to students.

Good Young Person's Book--Short for the $$ 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I didn't realize this was a young persons title when I added it to my wish list. After receiving it as a gift, I was at first disappointed. But once I opened it and started reading, almost all was OK. The book is well-written, even if it is targeted for the 8-12 crowd and the pictures are great! The only negative is the $ for such a short book. It's less than 50 pages, but it is nicely printed and bound. I'll enjoy it now and my kids will in a few years when they are older.

Nicely-done intro for young readers. 4 out of 5 stars.

Caroline Arnold, Stone Age Farmers by the Sea (Clarion, 1997)

Stone Age Farmers by the Sea, aimed at a young market, is an interesting introduction and overview to the Orkney archaeological site of Skara Brae. While it's hard to call any sixty-four page profusely-illustrated book comprehensive, Stone Age Farmers by the Sea pauses to consider a number of introductory things that many more advanced-age books ignore, perhaps because those books assume the reader already knows a good bit about Skara Brae. Arnold, by not falling into that trap, comes up with a book that can be enjoyed by young and old novices to Skara Brae alike. *** ½

Editorial Review:

This description of the Stone Age settlement preserved in the sand dunes of Scotland's Orkney Islands includes how it was discovered and what it reveals about life in prehistoric times.

Editorial Review:

In 1958 Gordon R. Willey and Philip Phillips first published Method and Theory in American Archaeology - a volume that went through five printings, the last in 1967 at the height of what became known as the new, or processual, archaeology. The advent of processual archaeology, according to Willey and Phillips, represented a "theoretical debate...a question of whether archaeology should be the study of cultural history or the study of cultural process." Willey and Phillips suggested that little interpretation had taken place in American archaeology, and their book offered an analytical perspective; the methods they described and the structural framework they used for synthesizing American prehistory were all geared toward interpretation. Method and Theory served as the catalyst and primary reader on the topic for over a decade. This facsimile reprint edition of the original University of Chicago Press volume includes a new foreword by Gordon R. Willey, which outlines the state of American archaeology at the time of the original publication, and a new introduction by the editors to place the book in historical context. The bibliography is exhaustive. Academic libraries, students, professionals, and knowledgeable amateurs will welcome this new edition of a standard-maker among texts on American archaeology.
