Editorial Review:

Dr. Fichtner presents a concise summary of the development and problems of the Habsburg Empire as a multiethnic state from the 16th century to the end of World War I. Twenty-six documents - some from local journals and periodicals of the era - illustrate the political, cultural and economic relations of the Habsburg peoples, both with their rulers and with one another.

A straight account......easy to follow 4 out of 5 stars.

Although you won't find any new and interesting twists in this book about the death of Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, you will find easy reading that portrays the events at Mayerling in a straight forward, easy to follow account. The author promised to give the true account of how she died, and I was hoping for something new;I think that most people already know that Rudolf killed her and then killed himself. The pictures were excellent, and several of them I had never seen before. If you're new to the Mayerling legend, I highly recommend reading this one first

Editorial Review:

John Boyer offers a meticulously researched examination of the social and political atmosphere of late imperial Vienna. He traces the demise of Vienna's liberal culture and the burgeoning of a new radicalism, exemplified by the rise of Karl Lueger and the Christian Socialist Party during the latter half of the nineteenth century. This important study paves the way for new readings of fin de siecle Viennese politics and their broader European significance.

"Offers a comprehensive, multicausal study of the rise of Christian Socialism in Vienna, that phenomenon which was experienced nowhere else in urban Central Europe and which culminated in the famous clash between the Austrian establishment and the colourful, domineering lead of the movement, Karl, Lueger."—R.J.W. Evans, History

"Boyer's analysis is masterful in terms of research, exposition, and organization. His use of available economic data is judicious, and his sense of the social structure of late nineteenth-century Vienna is formidable."—William A. Jenks, American Historical Review

"To understand Viennese and even imperial politics in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Boyer's book is absolutely essential.""—Robert Wegs, Review of Politics

Editorial Review:

This detailed study charts the uneven growth of the Austrian navy from its high point following Archduke Ferdinand Max's administration and the War of 1866 to its ultimate dissolution after World War 1. In following this development, Lawrence Sondhaus not only relates the operational aspects of the Habsburg navy but also traces the growth of popular navalism in Austria-Hungary, the role of naval expansion in stimulating industrial development, and the peculiar difficulties of navy commanders in dealing with the Habsburg nationality problem and the cumbersome politics of Austro-Hungarian dualism.

Editorial Review:

46 years ago, the Allied Control Council produced the final obsequies of a state which "from its earliest days had been a bearer of militarism and reaction in Germany". With this laconic text, Prussia, with its near millennium of history as one of the frontier states of Christian Europe, was cast away. To many contemporaries, the gesture had a futile ring to it. This book attempts to examine Prussia over the years following the creation of the German Empire in 1871. It shows how severe virtues were weathered away by the new imperial idea. It analyzes all aspects of Prussian life, from the Hohenzollern monarchy to sexuality, and from the arts to the importance of the army. It explains how the idea of "Prussianism" lay behind every aspect of the state, worshipped by some and feared by others. Prussia has been seen as a scapegoat for Nazi Germany. The author questions the truth behind these charges, examines the historical background and looks at the traces which remain today. Giles MacDonogh has also written "A Good German: Adam von Trott zu Solz", a study of the German opposition to Hitler.

Editorial Review:

This book examines the two main dimensions of the European Union's enlargement to eight central and eastern European countries (CEECs) in 2004. Why did the EU agree to enlargement, despite the costs for some incumbents who have veto-power? How can we explain the (uneven) pattern of accommodation of the CEECs’ preferences in concrete policies?

Fascinating account of life of a woman anti-fascist war hero 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

What a pity that this book is out of print! Surely there continues to be a market for a thrilling suspenseful story of a brave American woman caught up in the Nazi takeover of Austria. Muriel Gardiner, who was studying medicine and psychoanalysis at the University of Vienna at the time, risked her life by joining the anti-fascist underground. She is the subject of the story "Julia" by Lillian Hellman, which was made into a motion picture of the same name (starring Vanessa Redgrave and Jane Fonda). The real story is even more interesting, and should be more widely known. Fortunately, Amazon.com was able to find this book promptly for me. It's a page-turner.

Fascinating 5 out of 5 stars.
