This is fantasy 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is a very good read, full of adventure, romance, intrigue, magic, and suspense. While first book in this series was a bit slow, this book takes you back to what got you hooked on fantasy novels.
The characters are developed down to the smallest detail. They almost become personal friends. You feel all the excitement, fear, anger, and happiness that they feel.
The story is a typical adventure story, but Ms. Rawn has developed a way of throwing you of the predictable path with many different twists and curves to her plot. Some of which are so far off you want to start over to see if you missed something that could have predicted this event.
The only real issue with this book is that it takes time to develop. Some may think this book is to long, but a strong story with good character development takes many things and time is one of them.
Overall, this is an excellent book. I loved it and have read it many times.

Editorial Review:

As High Prince and Princess, Rohan and Sioned must keep both the peace and the secret of the dragons. But the legacy of their evil predecessor remains-and as their son Pol grows up, the kingdom splits in what may become a bloody battle for the crown.

To make things worse, a long-vanquished foe vows to destroy the Prince. The only hope of defeating their dark sorcery lies in reclaiming the knowledge so carefully concealed in the long-lost Star Scroll.

This excellent fantasy continues 4 out of 5 stars.

A decent 2nd book in this trilogy.

While I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first, I'd still recommend this series to any serious fantasy genre lover. Plenty of intrigue, betrayals, magical happenings and unexpected twists and turns.

However, I have a couple of complaints for this book.

1.)Most annoying, there is no map: this story covers a huge geographic area and a map would have added so much to the overall quality of this epic fantasy. Hard to believe that the author didn't include one.

2.)Without giving spoilers, there was one locale in this book that seemed to take an inordinate amount of time to get through.

All in all, a good second book in this interesting and well written fantasy series. Recommended. 4-4 1/2 Stars.

Editorial Review:

Treachery and deceit run rampant throughout a devastated land, spawning dark alliances in the terrible war ignited by the enmity of two families. But unbeknownst to all, there are others who truly control the beleaguered kingdom's destiny -- combatants emerging from eons of restless sleep to renew the bloody terror of a battle older than time.

Children at war 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

A boy 7 years old left to rule a princedom. And the mother who mourns not only the death of a husband, a brother, and all her brothers family. Sits in a chair and weeps at the loss of childhood. At the end of this book so many children are fighting. from 7 - 11 years old. That I was left thinking to my self how odd. Then it occurred to me. Almost all the men are dead.

This is one of the most gripping novels I have ever read. Book 2 The Dragon Token, puts the reader right in the middle of the war with the Vellant'im and their High Warlord. And the Azhrei and the people of the Kingdoms.

War is hell as someone once said. And Melanie Rawn makes sure you understand exactly what that means. By allowing you to invest yourself into a character only to have that character die to the ravages of war.

This is unlike any book I have ever read. I found my self throwing the book across the room on more then one occasion. No book has ever griped me so tightly or effected me so deeply.

Too convoluted 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book returns to the World of sunrunners explored in the Rawn's "The Dragon Prince" trilogy. If you haven't read those first three books, this book will not make sense to you. It makes no effort at recapping previous events, and should be considered Book 4.

Rawn is a political fantasy author, and my opinion of this book was that she had so many subplots and hidden motivations going on between the different ruling characters, she lost track of them. Naming conventions for characters (similar sounding) can also confuse.

The complexity is richly epic if you care about the characters, but oddly, my favorite characters of Rohan and Sioned weren't given a big role. I hate the way Rawn draws Pol, their son, and the new characters didn't resonate with me.

I'd recommend buying the first book "Dragon Prince" if you are new to Rawn; that one was brilliant. If you love Rawn already, buy it -- you'll likely love this too.

Personally, I've read dozens of fantasy books I've thought were better (anything by Jim Butcher, Terry Brooks, or Terry Goodkind). However to be fair to Rawn, buy the "Dragon Prince" before you check out those gentlemen. It really was a good novel.

Editorial Review:

A generation of peace is about to be shattered as a seemingly unstoppable invasion force lays siege to High Prince Rohan's realm. For Andry, the Sunrunner Lord, the invasion is a fulfilment of his long-ago visions of disaster to come. This is the first book in the "Dragon Star" trilogy.

Editorial Review:

From Grandmaster Robert A. Heinlein comes a long-lost first novel, written in 1939 and never before published, introducing ideas and themes that would shape his career and define the genre that is synonymous with his name.

July 12, 1939Perry Nelson is driving along the palisades when suddenly another vehicle swerves into his lane, a tire blows out, and his car careens off the road and over a bluff. The last thing he sees before his head connects with the boulders below is a girl in a green bathing suit, prancing along the shore....

When he wakes, the girl in green is a woman dressed in furs and the sun-drenched shore has transformed into snowcapped mountains. The woman, Diana, rescues Perry from the bitter cold and takes him inside her home to rest and recuperate.

Later they debate the cause of the accident, for Diana is unfamiliar with the concept of a tire blowout and Perry cannot comprehend snowfall in mid-July. Then Diana shares with him a vital piece of information: The date is now January 7. The year...2086.

When his shock subsides, Perry begins an exhaustive study of global evolution over the past 150 years. He learns, among other things, that a United Europe was formed and led by Edward, Duke of Windsor; former New York City mayor LaGuardia served two terms as president of the United States; the military draft was completely reconceived; banks became publicly owned and operated; and in the year 2003, two helicopters destroyed the island of Manhattan in a galvanizing act of war. This education in the ways of the modern world emboldens Perry to assimilate to life in the twenty-first century.

But education brings with it inescapable truths -- the economic and legal systems, the government, and even the dynamic between men and women remain alien to Perry, the customs of the new day continually testing his mental and emotional resolve. Yet it is precisely his knowledge of a bygone era that will serve Perry best, as the man from 1939 seems destined to lead his newfound peers even further into the future than they could have imagined.

A classic example of the future history that Robert Heinlein popularized during his career, For Us, The Living marks both the beginning and the end of an extraordinary arc of political, social, and literary crusading that comprises his legacy. Heinlein could not have known in 1939 how the world would change over the course of one and a half centuries, but we have our own true world history to compare with his brilliant imaginings, rendering For Us, The Living not merely a novel, but a time capsule view into our past, our present, and perhaps our future.

The novel is presented here with an introduction by acclaimed science fiction writer Spider Robinson and an afterword by Professor Robert James of the Heinlein Society.

Half-hearted at best 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I keep hoping the Guardians of the Flame series will improve, but after the first two, it was all down hill. The author has a habit of reusing favorite phrases and descriptions. Particularly disgusting is the frequently mentioned "loosing of the bowels with a horrible flatulence" upon someone's death. Although many of the other stories in the series follow an interesting idea (modern-day folks transported into a wizards-and-warriors world), this story fails to have anything interesting to explore. He keeps you in the dark about the 'real' part of the plot until at least page 288, and even then it's over so quickly that I almost missed it. This book doesn't really have anything to recommend it; it has poor writing, poor character development, and a poor plot. I'd take Terry Brooks over this any day.

Editorial Review:

Kethol--The pretty fellow, a long and lanky redhead with an easy smile and an easygoing attitude that his clever eyes deny. He is quick with a quick...and quicker with a sword.

Durine--The big man, a head taller than most and twice as wide, built like a barrel, with a loyal heart and hands too thick to use anything more delicate than an ax handle.

Pirojil--The ugly one, his face heavy-jawed, with an eye ridge that would mark him as a Neanderthal only to the most gracious. But looks deceive, and his might be the rarest gift of all.

Athos, Porthos, and Aramis they're not.

Excellent story, mediocre characters 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The bad reviews are an unfortunate result of Weis & Hickman's amazing ability to develop characters. In fact, the world of Dragonlance is a fantasy world. If you have read as many series as I have, you understand that there is a draw to this well developed world that is familiar, fun, and exciting. So all of us reviewing this have read the Chronicles and Legends. We love the characters, and all of us were blown away at how well the characters became entire worlds unto themselves. And then the other books, and stories, were so easy to be drawn into because of this.

Now comes the Fifth Age (don't worry, no spoilers). It's different, all the old characters are gone. Now we (the readers) don't feel like you're in the same world. Before, it was so easy because we saw so many characters walk through Ansalon, and learned and experienced Ansalon through their eyes. Many Dragonlancers will agree that the character development in the Chronicle/Legends were superior in quality, well above _ANY_ genre of books (and I love Steven King). The reason Dragonlance is so popular is (arguably) because of the amazing character development that Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman did. And I'm not gonna lie to you, the character development in this book and the series is NOT as good as the Chronicles/Legends. That being said,

SO WHAT. This is a series. None of the 50+ books in the Dragonlance series has been as good as Chronicles/Legends. Okay, enough about character development. Don't compare it. These books are good. They keep you on the edge, and they are fantastic stories about the history of new Krynn. If you're like me, you'll love reading what happens next the absorbing stories. The conversation is sub-par. But the interaction, the storyline is still very fun and exciting. Don't read this book expecting Chronicles/Legends. Read this book expecting the next exciting story of the Dragonlance world.

Editorial Review:

The Summer of Chaos has ended. Ansalon's nightmare has only just begun.

The gods have departed the world, heralding a new Age of Mortals. But before the dust of war can settle, vast shadows cover the land. Dragons have come to Ansalon, larger and more powerful than any ever seen, and they will wreak havoc on nations still trembling from war. As the lands themselves begin to change under the dire magic of the new dragon overlords, new heroes arise to lead the fight for freedom.

The first book in a rerelease of a key trilogy in the Dragonlance saga, this trilogy covers key events that take place between Dragons of Summer Flame and the bestselling War of Souls trilogy. Will all-new artwork and cover designs, these books tie in with The Dhamon Saga.

I just had to say something... 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I looked over the reviews here of a book I enjoyed, and saw that the majority didn't care for Ms Putney's story. As it was my favorite among them, along with Winterfair gifts, I wanted to share my opinion that perhaps Ms Putney's story didn't work well with the mostly science fiction tales here, and regular readers of science fiction (of which I am not one) might not appreciate her brand of storytelling. I know that she has written a follow up novel, and I have set that aside to read when I have more time (I am a returning student, and my spare time is sadly taken up with reading less enjoyable fare). I also think that some reviews were harshly critical of the brevity of the stories, but after all, what do you expect from a romance story that is one of perhaps 4-6 tales in the same space used for a typical novel by these authors? If you don't care for two persons hooking up within the space of a few pages, I would suggest that you stop buying these compilations.

Astonishingly beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Of all of the Royo books I've seen, Secrets, Malefic, and Visions are the most spectacular. The women are absolutely gorgeous, and the level of detail and hyper-realism is astonishing! If you're new to Royo, buy these three books. They emphasize fantasy illustration (as opposed to the sci-fi themes of Women and the post-apocolyptic themes of III Millenium). The quality of the artwork in III Millenium is also very good, but it has a darker, more somber tone. I'd recommend avoiding Women and Conceptions 1. They don't even come close to comparing with the four books listed above, and don't reflect the exceptional talent of Royo as an artist.

Fabulous pictures 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

great book if your looking for artistic pictures, just wonderful. But this is not a book for reading, just tells about the paintings and some have little poems.

Editorial Review:

An artist of the spectacular. Each collection sparkles with pieces seen on book covers from around the world. Fantasy, science fiction, eroticism, etc... Royo has devised a special personal mix of media that makes his work so uncannily real, so beguilingly engaging as to make him a best-selling star.

This book is likley to satasfy you even more than the one preceding it, The Dawning of a New Age, though not as good as the book following it ,The Eve of the Malestrom. I recomend this book highly and know any of the people reading this would enjoy every word.

Picking up steam 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was far better than the first. A lot of important things are now happening in the dragonlance world and everything is going at a break neck pace. I was very pleased to see that the characters from the first book are being given a lot more depth. New characters are entering in from different sources. This pick has a style very simaler to the Chronicles trilogy. There is a LOT that goes on.
