Luis Royo Calender 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Graphics!!!! Exactly what I was looking for. Best heavy metal calendar I found on line. Awesome.

Great form and style; some of Royo's best female images 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great sample of Luis Royo's work, at least of his take on the female form. The images here are great.... sexy but strong, dark but elegant. With a few exceptions, I don't recognize these images from any of his books... although then again I don't have all of his books (yet). That makes this calendar original, and a welcome addition to my Luis Royo collection.

DARK, SHADOWY DELIGHTS 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Dark Labyrinth is artist Luis Royo's latest collection, thinly disguised as a graphic novel. There is a modest story that frames the collection of Royo's artwork. The story tells of a young artist who visits the studio of a painter that he has long admired. The young man has long been enthralled by the painter's brooding, yet sensual work. The young man praised the older painter as he was invited into the master's studio. When the old man asks if he would like to become his apprentice, the young artists jumps at the chance.

The old painter's routine, however, is quite confusing. He paints only at night, and in a small room with only moonlight for illumination, a room the apprentice is forbidden to enter. One day, while his teacher is sleeping, he dares to enter the forbidden room, only to find canvases covered completely in black. He begins to touch the painting, sensing something beautiful and terrible beneath the darkness, and soon finds himself drawn into the gothic, exquisite world of the Dark labyrinth.

Well that's the backstory but the real story is 64 pages of Royo's stunning art, all fitting into this theme. The book contains primarily work that was previously unpublished, most of it finished paintings along with a smattering of sketches. Royo's art is horrific and evocative. His beautiful women are sexy yet with an air of danger about them.

"Mother Earth" is one of my favorite paintings in the book. It shows that nature goddess shedding a tear of blood over a desolate landscape. Then there is "The Game of the Mask" featuring a lovely, mask-clad nude in a richly detailed costume, looking like a princess of Hell. "The Counter of Time" depicts an angelic blond maiden wearing a skull headpiece, apparently looking down over the world.

Each page of Dark Labyrinth brings a new shadowy delight to the reader in one of Royo's best collections yet from NBM Publishing. A true spectacle!

Astonishingly beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Of all of the Royo books I've seen, Secrets, Malefic, and Visions are the most spectacular. The women are absolutely gorgeous, and the level of detail and hyper-realism is astonishing! If you're new to Royo, buy these three books. They emphasize fantasy illustration (as opposed to the sci-fi themes of Women and the post-apocolyptic themes of III Millenium). The quality of the artwork in III Millenium is also very good, but it has a darker, more somber tone. I'd recommend avoiding Women and Conceptions 1. They don't even come close to comparing with the four books listed above, and don't reflect the exceptional talent of Royo as an artist.

Fabulous pictures 4 out of 5 stars.

great book if your looking for artistic pictures, just wonderful. But this is not a book for reading, just tells about the paintings and some have little poems.

Editorial Review:

An artist of the spectacular. Each collection sparkles with pieces seen on book covers from around the world. Fantasy, science fiction, eroticism, etc... Royo has devised a special personal mix of media that makes his work so uncannily real, so beguilingly engaging as to make him a best-selling star.

One of Royo's best 5 out of 5 stars.

I have had the opportunity to look at most of Luis Royo's books, and this is my favorite. If I had to give away all of my Royo books but one, this would be the one I keep.

Now don't get me wrong, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with any of his other books--some are stronger than others but I really don't think there is a weak one out there. This is my favorite primarily because I think the artwork is some of his best. The girls are prettier, their curves are rounder, the colors are richer, and the background hazes are more mysterious. The other main reason I like this book so much is that many of the finished pieces are accompanied by the concept sketches that preceded them. It's a great mix of painting, drawing, and even narrative that all come together to bring a Royo fantasy to life.

Royo's figures are amazing to me--with a few strokes of a pen and a thin wash with a brush, he creates a beautiful figure, and voila--his piece is done. None of his figures are overworked--they all remain fresh. It's hard to find an artist who can scratch out a figure with so few lines, but it makes for a beautiful rendering, and Royo does it well.

If you're shopping for your first Royo book, this would be a great choice. If you're adding to your library, oh yeah--you need this collection. Enjoy.

Royo's Conceptions III ---- another great one 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Royo fans will love this one. Mostly sketches and funky one-paragraph story/explanations behind the imagery. However, if you ever wanted to see how L.R. comes up with his final illustrations, this book is for you. You will see sketch-to-sketch-to completion on many of his newer paintings. There are a few final colorized paintings in the middle of the book too. All are amaziing. Cant wait for the next one.

Bare pencil artwork for some of Luis Royo art,if you ar a fan or an artist wannabe you are going to like this book.

The Female Figure 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This collection is predominately finished sketches with a handful of colored pieces. The subject matter is almost entirely the female figure with only a few male subjects who accompany the female focus. Royo's art is as always awe inspiring to look at, and the hard cover makes this book quite impressive. The size of the book is slightly smaller than most of Royo's collections but the content is amazing. I highly recommend this book as well as his Secrets collection.

A Big Disappoint 1 out of 5 stars.
57 of 60 people found this review helpful.

I'm probably the biggest fan of Luis Royo, and was very excited to see a best of book.
Why am I disappointed with this book? Because almost all of the images here are zoomed and extremely cropped. the zoomed pics show more detail than avaialable in Royo's other books, but no way does this make up for the what's missing from the complete pieces. Its more of a highlights of Royo than a true best of.
To add even more salt to the wound, this book contains alot of sketches of the final pieces, found in conceptions I & II.
Those Should of been excluded since theres no way they could be considered "best of".
If anyone is interested in buying this book I recommend you see it in person first. It's really a shame to see his art so edited and clipped. If not for the 2 or 3 new images found only in this book I would return it or sell it.
If youre looking for a good collection of the best of Royo, for the same price as this book, you could get his 3 first books Women, Malefic, & Secrets.

Dreams or a Nightmare? 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Loving Luis Royo's art & his fascinating scenarios I'm quick to buy all of his books. This book really didn't have what I expected to find, but there were some plusses. It seems that most of the work in this book is from a collection of Royo's work over the years & not a whole lot of new. What I found that was a plus about the book are some of the step by step techniques behind his creation of a painting & a few paintings that caught my eye including the cover piece. If you're a fan of Royo, add it to your collection. If you just discovered Royo, start with Malefic, Secrets, or Third Millennium.

Misguiding title - still a ROYO! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

As my title says, the imagery has very little to do with Dreams. It contains quite a few Native American themes - the Wild West. This is mixed with futuristic scenes, aliens, spaceships and naked ladies with weapons as usual. My point is: it is hard to title this book - or maybe I'd call it: "From the Wild West to the Strange Future"... Still it's Royo. He is one of the best in fantasy art. Compared with other artists this book would get 5 stars - compared with his other books it got only 4. So if you are not as a big a fan of Royo as me - only 'sort of' like him - then pick another of his books. (See my reviews for them...)
