Not his best product but worth the read 4 out of 5 stars.

R.A. Salvatore's the Pirate King describes political intrigue, power struggles between ruling factions and revolution of oppressed in a fantasy setting. The famed protagonist of this second series in the book, Drizzt Do'Urden, appears with his friends Regis and Bruenor at events that lead to escalations between opposing factions.
One of them is the confrontation of the Orc King Obould against the Demon Nyphithys, a prelude to the climax of the story, the fight of Deudermont against the Archmage Arcane in Luskan.
The second book in the transition series is well written and the extensive details of the battles allows for great visualization during the story. I will not say that this book is his best one yet, due to the fact that he sometimes seems to change his pace suffering a diminishing flow of the story, but overall I would have to say that I was quite satisfied with what I have read thus far. This part of the series is only worth reading if you are a Drizzt Do'urden fan and have been reading the previous series. Only then will one understand more about the characters and the setting The Pirate King takes place.

Editorial Review:

Drizzt returns to Luskan, and the Realms will never be the same!

The Arcane Brotherhood has long held the city of Luskan in their power, but when corruption eats away at their ranks, Captain Deudermont comes to the rescue of a city that has become a safe haven for the Sword Coast's most dangerous pirates. But rescuing a city from itself may not be as easy as Deudermont thinks, and when Drizzt can't talk him out of it, he'll be forced to help.

Drizzt is back in action again, and bringing more changes to the Forgotten Realms setting. This all new hardcover adventure will keep Drizzt fans guessing the whole way, with edge-of-your-seat action and plot twists that even the most casual reader of the Forgotten Realms novel line can't afford to miss!

Great stories, great characters, although only the main character is sketched out completely. Good read.

meh 3 out of 5 stars.

Being over 17, I don't think I'm the target audience for this series. The concept of a protaganist who inexplicably ends up with a completely different set of values from the society that raised him distances me.

Good story though, cheap easy reading on the lue.

Editorial Review:

Give the gift of the Legend of Drizzt!

Drizzt Do'Urden made his first mistake the moment he was born: he was a boy. In the rigid matriarchy of the dark elf city of Menzoberranzan, that makes his life forfeit. But when his own mother tries but fails to kill him, Drizzt's path is set. He must find a way to escape the treacherous Underdark, even if that means setting out alone into the no less dangerous World Above.

This gift set includes the New York Times best-sellers Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn.

I like the illustration of this version better than the previously published ones. However, the font tends to be very small and it takes some getting-used-to.

Drizzt Rocks 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the first time I have read fantasy and I am soooo glad my mother talked me into reading this series. I have not had this much fun reading about a character like Drizzt in so long...R.A.Salvatore did a a wonderful job with this series and I really look forward to finishing the rest of the books...

Ready for the next box set pls 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Drizzt is back, and facing a world changed forever!

An uneasy peace between the dwarves of Mithral Hall and the orcs of the newly established Kingdom of Many-Arrows can't last long. The orc tribes united under Obould begin to fight each other, and Bruenor is determined to finish the war that nearly killed him and almost destroyed everything he's worked to build. But it will take more than swords and axes to bring a lasting peace to the Spine of the World. Powerful individuals on both sides may have to change the way they see each other. They may have to start to talk. And it won't be easy.

The paper-back of the novel that, for the first time since the #4 New York Times best seller The Lone Drow, brought Drizzt Do'Urden to center stage in a book that set fans of Drizzt and the Forgotten Realms line on notice--be prepared for anything! This book wasn't just the next installment in the long-running saga of the famous dark elf, but the beginning of a bold new trilogy that will help change the face of the Forgotten Realms world forever.

Editorial Review:

We all owe a debt to Akar Kessel, that treacherous chump of a wizard's apprentice, briefly known as the (short-lived) Tyrant of Icewind Dale. Akar started it all when he stumbled across the ancient and malevolent Crenshinibon, the Crystal Shard, thereby kicking off one of fantasy's best and best-loved series--and at its heart, one of the genre's most beloved heroes, the noble dark-elf ranger Drizzt Do'Urden.

While surely no Tolkien (who is, really?), Bob Salvatore can take pride in the fact that he's brought legions of enthusiastic fans to the genre--and for anyone who's caught themselves in an embarrassed yawn on page 412 of The Silmarillion, that's not a distinction to be taken lightly. You'd have to be a pretty cold fish for your pulse not to quicken a bit as Drizzt and company lay into yet another ravenous horde of trolls (or giants, or wererats). As an affectionate Terry Brooks says in his introduction to this collector's edition, you could do worse than to have your tombstone say you were a solid, workmanlike writer. And Salvatore, through his superior characterizations and knack for just telling a believable, engaging, and lovable story, transcends even that worthy praise.

For fans, this collection unfolds like a treasured scrapbook: The Crystal Shard, where we first meet the band and explore the Dale (with so many unforgettable scenes: Drizzt taking down Errtu, Wulfgar crushing King Heafstaag's head with his bare hands, Bruenor tearing up as he gives Wulfgar the freshly forged Aegis-fang); Streams of Silver, with the heroes fighting their way to Mithril Hall and facing Artemis Entreri for the first time; and The Halfling's Gem, in which old Rumblebelly has been carted back to Calimport (who can forget the flying-chariot pirate fight, or when Drizzt--finally!--sneaks a quick smooch from Catti-brie?). A must-have on the shelf of any Drizzt true believer, or the perfect gift for some young, would-be fantasy fan. --Paul Hughes

Editorial Review:

From the author of more than a dozen New York Times best sellers and his son, comes the first installment of a brand-new fantasy trilogy written just for young readers...

Barely a teen and already guarding a secret that could jeopardize his young life, Maimun is marked for death. With the help of a mysterious stranger, the boy escapes his village and flees out to sea, stowing away on the pirate hunting ship, Sea Sprite, where he comes across a most unlikely ally: the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden. With a half-demon determined to destroy him, and a crew of sailors resentful of the trouble he's caused, Maimun must find the courage to prove his worth, both to his friends and to himself.

Nearly two decades ago, R.A. Salvatore introduced the world to Drizzt D'Urden in a series that has since become a fantasy classic and a consistent presence on best seller lists. Now, for the first time, Salvatore partners with his son Geno to craft a brand-new story just for young readers, featuring a cameo of the most beloved fantasy character of all time.

For young readers seeking the next great fantasy saga or for long-time fans who can't miss any installment in the Drizzt saga, this book delivers all the action, intrigue, and magic you've come to expect from the Salvatore name.

Editorial Review:

Think of it as an opportunity to give all those tattered old paperbacks away to younger adventurers. Just as Wizards of the Coast did with the Icewind Dale and Dark Elf trilogy hardbacks, this 1,000-plus page collector's edition pulls together some of Drizzt Do'Urden's best stories--Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, and Passage to Dawn--into one whopping volume.

Starting way back with 1988's Crystal Shard, the Icewind Dale books kicked off the celebrated Drizzt saga, while the Dark Elf prequel trio that followed detailed the scimitar swinger's shadowy beginnings in the drow city of Menzoberranzan. This third series essentially rolls up a bunch of random encounters from both worlds--all of Drizzt's cherished friends and newfound foes on the surface world, along with his old adversaries from the Underdark--throwing them into combat after combat to see who shakes out.

Legacy begins amicably enough, with Bruenor back on the throne and Cattie-brie and Wulfgar getting ready to tie the knot. But along comes a spider (the demon queen Lloth, in this case), and pretty soon the tunnels below Mithril Hall become a bloodbath. Starless Night takes Drizzt deeper into the Underdark in search of his lost friends, to Blingdenstone and on towards Menzoberranzan. Then Siege of Darkness nearly closes the series with its giant drow-dwarf battle finale, but the sea-faring followup adventure Passage to Dawn reveals the fate of one of Drizzt's fallen comrades, held in the Abyss by the demon Errtu. --Paul Hughes

Very disappointing turn in an otherwise great series 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is so terribly disappointing - not for just what it is but what it should have been. It appears as though Salvatore may have finally burnt out with respect to this series. Every single battle description makes you feal like you've read the same battle before - many times before. The fight scenes got old very quickly, and I found myself speed reading over them to get to something meatier - but that just never happened. The plot is the weakest of all the Drizzt books, and the last 50 pages seem like they were just thrown together to get the book published. It's all just a setup for another book anyway, which is extremely frustrating. When I finish a monster trilogy like this, I expect some finality, yet the main story arc didn't even have a conclusion! The last 50 pages introduce many side plots for the next series of books, and they all came from nowhere.

I've read every other Drizzt book and enjoyed them, but I think this might be my last. I wish Salvatore well, and I hope he finds something new to be passionate about. It appears that his passion no longer lies with Drizzt and friends. :(

Drizzt fan for life!

Not my favorite trilogy, but this is the origin of Drizzt Do'urdon! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've been an avid follower of Robert Salvatore's work since I was 10 or so years old. I am now 18. Though I am limited to just reading a few authors of the Forgotten Realms world (just started reading Ed Greenwood's books), I see Salvatore's books as my favorites ever. It was because of R.A. Salvatore's "The Crystal Shard" that I made the decision of wanting to become a writer, so I am indebted to this talented man.

Anyway, I own most of his books from Echoes of the Fourth Magic to the installments of Corona and to the Collector's Editions of Drizzt's adventures thus far. And for the listing of my favorites I'd have to say this Collector's Edition as a whole is my 4th favorite.

When I first got into the worlds of reading and the world of Faerun, I picked up the Icewind Dale Trilogy and was blown away. I still think that The Crystal Shard is THE best work of R.A. Salvatore. Knowing that there was going to be an origin story for Drizzt Do'urdon I saved up my allowance(I was young, maybe like 13?) for many weeks, and then I preordered each book as it came.

Let me review each book on its own then I'll give the master review.

Book #1: Homeland
For me this was a very important read, and Salvatore did not let me down on this one. I felt the character of Zaknafein was the strongest in the whole book, and though Drizzt's journey from boyhood to the nearly-invincible fight we know him as is very interesting and kept me turning pages, I felt that other drow were quite flat. Matron Mother annoyed the s**t out of me for she's just the evil drow stereotype. (Which occurs a lot in these books because thats all Drizzt interacts with in this one. I felt that Salvatore could've made the characters more dimensional like Jarlaxle or the Faceless One.)
Action sequences thrilled me and I was on the edge of my bed when I read the last couple chapters.
The cons with Homeland was that, yeah, I felt that the drow could have more tweaking and be more interesting, but no matter; Salvatore accomplishes this with Legacy of the Drow books.

Book #2: Exile
Exile is my favorite out of this trilogy because Salvatore does much better with the characterization as fresh faces come into the fold, and old ones actually find a voice thats interesting. I especially love the journey that we take with Drizzt as he discovers more about himself and finds morals and values. The action in this is much more realistic and Drizzt is seen to be vulnerable which makes for a fun read.

Book *3: Sojourn
Okay, okay, before you fan boys say that this is the best Drizzt trilogy let me tell you what I was hoping for in this trilogy after reading the MUCH better Icewind Dale trilogy. For I was disappointed.
As I read the books of the latter trilogy I wondered what went through Drizzt's mind as he came to the surface and how he came to meet Bruenor. This book does not live up to my expectations, though it is still entertaining in its own right. It's good but not great like Exile or heck Halfling's Gem.
After reading this specific book a while ago, I felt Salvatore was quite rushed with this one. The story itself is what I expected, but the interaction between characters was bland at times. Catti-brie wasn't boring as a younger version of her dwarf-raised self, but she wasn't grand. Only Bruenor and the bounty hunter Drizzt faces are the grand new faces. Don't get me wrong action is still good (not as good as Exile though, or Homeland) but the execution of this important cornerstone of Drizzt's life seemed so rushed that I was thinking, "What? That's it?"
I felt Salvatore could've done more to flesh out the characters that we've come to know and love.

THE MASTER REVIEW

As a reader of R.A. Salvatore, I'd say this is a must-have collector's edition.
As a reader of fantasy, Drizzt's story is one of the best out there.
But as a fan who has followed R.A. salvatore as a writer. This is NOT his best work for Forgotten Realms. Of course this is a must-have to enjoy the story of Drizzt & CO., But to get more into the characters I'd suggest Icewind Dale trilogy as it is much more interesting and I felt all ranges of emotions while reading that.

Otherwise this book is fun, worth the money, and has you cheering for Drizzt the whole time, but for me I'd recommend it with a bitter taste in my mouth because of the disappointment Sojourn left me. Only to those who wish to know the origin of the beloved Drizzt Do'urdon.

Elsewise start with Icewind Dale trilogy to see the reason why fantasy-fans love Drizzt Do'urdon.

Editorial Review:

This one-volume trilogy of novels recounts the birth and youth of one of the most well-known figures in modern fantasy literature. Born in the evil underground city of Menzoberranzan, Drizzt DoUrden must struggle against his dreadful heritage and survive the intrigues and murderous plots that are part of everyday life in the kingdom of the drow elves.

Reviewing the reviews 5 out of 5 stars.

Ok, let's start by saying that to call myself a fan of R A Salvatore would be a huge understatement. I have read just about every book he has written and my favorites by far are the books involving Drizzt and The Companions of the Hall. But my review really is to review the whiners reviewing The Orc King. And yes I know we are each entitled to our own opinion, so here's mine. First let me say after reading all of the negative and a few of the positive aswell that I am surprised that anyone that wrote a negative review can even read to begin with. Grab a dictionary or go back to school and learn how to spell and phrase a sentence correctly. Second on the list is for those individuals whinning that they couldn't tell where the story was going and what the point was. The fact that all of the main characters had changed and that by some weird chance Drizzt is not the fighter that he used to be. Well ladies and gents, that's story telling. Things change, Mr Salvatore has done a fine job of detailing the changing of everyones lives in his books. It's not a Simpsons cartoon that has been on for God knows how long and Bart is still the same age now that he was back when the show started. Drizzt and his friends have aged, they've grown and they have all had life changing experiences affect them and those around them.

Editorial Review:
