Great Art & Great Stories 5 out of 5 stars.

The Mercenary ... A real amazing artwork made by the oil ! .. A very hard artwork in a comic book ? .. I saw this remarkeble style only with ( Alex Ross ) the illustrator of " Kingdom Come " & here is now another challenger for his style

The Mercenary is a collection of short fantasy stories about a man telling his friends some of the risks he had before. These stories talking about different but interesting things , such as ( Sinbad - Lucifer - revolutions - giant lady ..) & more

I'm a comic books readre & to be honest, This is a very good one & It's one of my bests ... Try it & you won't regret it

Often-clever short comix tales by painter V. Segrelles 3 out of 5 stars.

Vicente Segrelles is an Italian artist whose painted comix haveappeared in "Heavy Metal" magazine...

In this collectionthe warrior known only as "The Mercenary" recounts a series of adventure tales to entertain his companion, the dragon-riding female warrior Nan-Tay.

The Mercenary's job is basically to rescue damsels in distress. One winds up eaten, another is accidentally turned into his steed and he must pursue a wicked witch to hell to undo the spell. There's the child who's saved only to sacrifice himself and the damsel whose rescue involves the Mercenary in a gender war.

Sometimes clever and sometimes a bit puzzling, but wonderfully illustrated! END

Its OWN genre! 5 out of 5 stars.

So beautiful, so rich, and so gracefully done. It completly stands apart from the vulgar, crazy, grungy, graphic novels I saw it sitting next to on the store shelf. Graphic novels with this kind of dignity, imagination, and execution are VERY RARE.

a really interesting comic book 5 out of 5 stars.

I think it is a different comic book. The images are show an extremely high quality and consistency, and the story mixes science-fiction and fantasy. It deals with the end of the world, by Year 1000. The end is quite promising: hope our own Year 2000 will be too!

Only ordinary 3 out of 5 stars.

"Year 1000" gets off to a good start. The artwork is sound, and the story has a promising start: mysterious phenomena augur the coming year millenium, and possibly the end of the world.

Although workmanlike, the story and art never really grab me. The renderings are all good and figures are drawn realistically. They are all static, though, and the characters all seem to talk "into the camera". Page layouts tend to have a predictable grid, and don't push the story along as well as they could.

The art is good, but lots of other artists are at least as good. The story is adequate, but other stories are better. I'll come back to this book sooner or later, but probably not sooner. In the mean time, I recommend it only to the serious Segrelle fan.

A ROMPING GOOD TIME 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The MERCENARY series by Segrelles is a classic. Segrelles brings to life a world that is so amazing and inhabited by some good-time monsters. These creatures remind me of those sci-fi/fantasy movies where special effects consist of an iguana placed down on a scale model city and as it tries to escape, demolishes the toy structures.

Get every single volume of this series. Every page is painted with oil colors. cool stuff.

side note: Volume 2 ( i think it's vol. 2) has some curious censorship happening. Someone has gone through and placed a mesh shirt over a woman's exposed breasts. It's so badly done it makes me wonder how Segrelles must feel to see this. I mean it looks like someone went through the book and used a sharpie pen over all this gorgeous oil work. I've seen other copies of this volume and it appears in all of them. Strange.....

A very entertaining book. It provided what I really like to see in a graphic novel: fantastic art and a good storyline.

There are better comics around 2 out of 5 stars.

What drew me to "The Mercenary" first was the artwork. It's one of those books that make 90s comics stand out so well. The images are painterly and generally well printed, except for the occasional problem in color registration.

Although well drawn, the figures always look static. Every pose seems balanced and stable, as if drawn from a live model. The problem is that motion, even walking, is inherently unbalanced and unstable.

The story is a series of shorter pieces put together. That comes from a fine tradition of story-telling, and can work well. The narrative never pulls the episodes together into a whole, though. For example The Mercenary leaves the end of the first chapter with a magic crystal and a canteen unwittingly filled with poisoned water. At the start of the second chapter, we discover that the crystal will never work again and that a detoxifying pill cures The Mercenary and his mount in just a few minutes.

I'm not getting rid of this one. Still, I want comics in my collection to meet a higher standard. Look this one over carefully before you buy, since there are many tastes that "The Mercenary" will not satisfy.
