Not Just High School Scholarships... 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book to look for scholarships for my high school child who will be going to college. Well, come to realize after reading through and scanning all the scholarships offered, only a small percentage are for high school students trying to raise money for college. Out of the 2043 scholarships they offer in this book by categories such as: General, Humanities/Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences, State of Residence, Membership, Ethnicity and Disability, I could only find 73 scholarships that she "might" be eligible for. They are almost all for small amounts- $1,000 or less also. It is a lot of work, for very little reward. There are less than 5 scholarships that are over $10,000 and the competition is fierce. A very large majority of the scholarships offered in this book are for college students, grad students, and adult students. I liked the book because it gives me a good "starting point", but I would say look for something geared more toward high school if that's what you need.

Editorial Review:

Every spring thousands of middle-class and lower-income high-school seniors learn that they have been rejected by America’s most exclusive colleges. What they may never learn is how many candidates like themselves have been passed over in favor of wealthy white students with lesser credentials—children of alumni, big donors, or celebrities.

In this explosive book, the Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter Daniel Golden argues that America, the so-called land of opportunity, is rapidly becoming an aristocracy in which America’s richest families receive special access to elite higher education—enabling them to give their children even more of a head start. Based on two years of investigative reporting and hundreds of interviews with students, parents, school administrators, and admissions personnel—some of whom risked their jobs to speak to the author—The Price of Admission exposes the corrupt admissions practices that favor the wealthy, the powerful, and the famous.

In The Price of Admission, Golden names names, along with grades and test scores. He reveals how the sons of former vice president Al Gore, one-time Hollywood power broker Michael Ovitz, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist leapt ahead of more deserving applicants at Harvard, Brown, and Princeton. He explores favoritism at the Ivy Leagues, Duke, the University of Virginia, and Notre Dame, among other institutions. He reveals that colleges hold Asian American students to a higher standard than whites; comply with Title IX by giving scholarships to rich women in “patrician sports” like horseback riding, squash, and crew; and repay congressmen for favors by admitting their children. He also reveals that Harvard maintains a “Z-list” for well-connected but underqualified students, who are quietly admitted on the condition that they wait a year to enroll.

The Price of Admission explodes the myth of an American meritocracy—the belief that no matter what your background, if you are smart and diligent enough, you will have access to the nation’s most elite universities. It is must reading not only for parents and students with a personal stake in college admissions, but also for those disturbed by the growing divide between ordinary and privileged Americans.

Editorial Review:

A startling call to action for improving the working lives of public school teachers.

Dave Eggers, acclaimed author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, son and brother of teachers, co-founder of writing centers in New York and San Francisco, and passionate education advocate, joins forces with teacher Nínive Clements Calegari and journalist Daniel Moulthrop to examine a national scandal that affects us all. Many teachers today must work two or more jobs to survive; they can't afford to buy homes or raise families. Why are they paid so poorly? How is this related to student achievement? And how can we find ways to treat them like the professionals they are?

"Teachers Have It Easy" examines how bad policy intersects with teachers' lives. Interweaving teachers' voices from across the country with hard-hitting facts and figures, the book is a clear-eyed view of the harsh realities of public school teaching, without any chicken-soup-for-the-soul success stories. With a look at the problems of recruitment and retention, the myths of short workdays and endless summer vacations, the realities of the work week, and shocking examples of how society views America's teachers, "Teachers Have It Easy" explores why salary reform may be the best way to improve public education and examines how innovative compensation plans can transform schools.

Editorial Review:

This first text in Allyn & Bacon's new Educational Leadership series from Peabody College, clarifies the complex financial issues facing educational administrators and presents them in a clear and engaging manner. This text was developed by the leading scholars in school finance as part of a series from one of the leading Schools of Education in the world. It is "Modern" not only in the sense that the information it presents is current, but in the manner in which it engages the reader to understand and apply that information. With its strong basis in current research, and easy-to-use, intuitive features, this book strikes an effective balance between the informational and the pedagogical. It covers trends (both historical and current) in educational finance and includes calculations and problems for students to work, and its "Modern" approach pays close attention to the new realities of accountability, resource allocation, and policy. The case studies and interactive pedagogy make this a very practical text.

Editorial Review:

This practical, easy-to-read guide explains the “why,” “What,” and “how” of school finance to those who need to understand the fundamentals of financial management. It allows readers to make the kind of informed, effective decisions that serve both the student body and the school's bottom line. Coverage incorporates the history of school finance and the changes that have come about in recent years; aligns its content to the most recent NCATE standards; and provides enough of the “nuts and bolts” of financing to ensure that the reader will easily grasp the subject. An expansive Resources for Administrators section at the end of the book provides the numerical standards used by all state Departments of Education and a comprehensive glossary of specialized financial terms make this book an excellent resource. A must-have desk reference for administrators in all facets of the education system. This book is also useful for those who sit on Education Boards, as well as those who make decisions about their community's use of resources.

This book was well written and full of information. Unfortunately, there were not any listings that I could apply for in Ohio, but other states might have better luck. You could probably find most of the listings online, but purchasing them condensed in one book is a real time saver.

Editorial Review:

This compelling book introduces Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen’s, capability approach, and explores its significance for theory, policy and practice in education. The capability approach has attracted attention across disciplinary boundaries in recent years contributing to debates in economics, political philosophy, health and social policy. This book complements these discussions by considering the potential of the approach for work in education, showing how the capability approach challenges some of the key assumptions of human capital theory and how it can provide substance for policy and practice in education concerned with social justice. The book looks particularly at questions concerning the education of children, gender equality, and higher education.Contributors hail from the UK, USA, Australia, Italy and Mexico.

Editorial Review:

Many believe that American education can only be improved with a sizable infusion of new resources into the nation's schools. Others find little evidence that large increases in spending lead to improvements in educational performance. Do additional school resources actually make any difference? The evidence on this question offers a striking paradox. Many analysts have found that extra school resources play a negligible role in improving student achievement while children are in school. Yet many economists have gathered data showing that students who attend well-endowed schools grow up to enjoy better job market success than children whose education takes place in schools where resources are limited. For example, children who attend schools with a lower pupil-teacher ratio and a better educated teaching staff appear to earn higher wages as adults than children who attend poorer schools. This book, which grew out of a Brookings conference, brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines to discuss the evidence on the link between school resources and educational and economic outcomes. In a lively exchange of views, they debate whether additional spending can improve the performance of the nation's schools. In addition to editor Gary Burtless, the contributors include Eric Hanushek, University of Rochester; James Heckman, University of Chicago; Julian Betts, University of California, San Diego; Richard Murnane, Harvard University; Larry Hedges, University of Chicago; and Christopher Jencks, Northwestern University.
