Spelling and Reading 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It's been shown that spelling provides a window to one's reading. This book explains the developmental stages children go through K- adult. The database software on one of the CDs that allows one to analyze the spelling inventories and sort the results is very easy to use. Classroom teachers appreciate the data I have been able to give them on their students. The word games and short videos on the 2nd CD are very helpful. The analytical phonics approach is very kid-friendly right up through high school. This is a very thorough resource that every ELA, SpEd, and Title I teacher should use.

Editorial Review:

With more than 15 years of extensive observations and experiences in real classrooms, the authors bring keen insight to this activity-based book. They advocate basing student learning on the appropriate developmental level. This philosophy is supported with more than 250 ready-to-use word study, spelling, vocabulary, and phonics activities presented in developmental sequence, from the Emergent through the Derivational Relation stage. For educators and school administrators.

Great guidelines 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Suggested by our daughter's teacher. Wish we could adhere to the guidelines regularly. The argument is sound and definitely gave us food for thought about how we teach our kids to relate to books and think about the written word. Recommended if you wish to share your passion with reading with your kids.

This is the book! What's more important than reading?! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is appropriate for every caring parent. I am a homeschooling mother of three and I can't recommend it highly enough. After reading the library's copy I had to buy my own copy, plus several for friends and family members who have kids. It is full of high-quality info and ideas about reading to children, and about them ultimately reading to themselves. There is also an organized and valuable "recommended books" list in the back. Wonderful!

Editorial Review:

Our first successful read-aloud 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had tried many different books from Black Beauty to Little Britches to enrich our homeschool literature time.
No joy. Of course, to be fair, it's worth mentioning that my children are still all 6 and younger (all five of them!)

When we did a thematic unit study on penguins, I came across this book in our local homeschool store, and it was a HIT! They all begged me to read "just one more chapter" every night. We went and saw the penguins in another town as a family vacation as a culmination to our study, and the main thing discussed was the book and Mr. Popper, and which penguin looked like Greta and Captain Cook from the book.

My boys still dress in all black some days, so they can be penguins. So, to keep the attention of a 6 year old, 4 year old, and 3 year old (and sometimes the 19 month old) it truly IS a classic! I look forward to reading it again to them soon! We ALL enjoyed Mr. Popper.

A child's introduction to Thoreau 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

While "My Side of the Mountain" is not Henry Thoreau it does make an enjoyable read on how to live a self-sufficient life. Think of this as "Survivorman meets Jules Verne" and you have a nice idea of the general theme.

Many have complained that they do not understand the plot and that the action moves to slowly. Personally, I find the pace of the novel to be quite refreshing. What we are given is a story about how someone can learn to become one with nature. This process was nto immediate and it took time to develop so Jean Craighead George allowed the story to move at a natural pace.

I first read "My Side of the Mountain" about 20 years ago when I was still in grade school. Oddly enough, of the dozens of books that I read from that time of my life only "My Side of the Mountain" and "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing" are the only ones that I actually remembered. It is pretty rare that you can find a book that you enjoy as much when you are 33 as you did when you were 11 years old.

"My Side of the Mountain" is written for children and adults alike. We all can dream about what life would be like on our own mountain. Maybe this isn't a book for everyone, but if you or your child enjoys camping, hiking, or just being outside this will probably become one of your own personal classics.

Editorial Review:

Education experts agree: the first years of a child's education are crucial to lifetime educational achievements. Parents and teachers have known this instinctively for years--the fact that What Your First Grader Needs to Know remains the bestselling Core Knowledge title is solid proof--and in response to their repeated requests, Doubleday is proud to offer What Your Kindergartner Needs To Know. The latest volume in the phenomenally successful Core Knowledge Series, which has more than one million copies in print in hardcover alone, features eighty pages of vibrant, full-color illustrations and a user-friendly design--specifically created for parents and teachers to use with kindergarten-age children.

Based on E.D. Hirsch's realization that much of the decline in America's educational standards has occurred because vague "skills," not information, are taught in the primary grades, it emphasizes fundamental knowledge in math, science, art, history, language arts, geography, and technology.  E.D. Hirsch and the staff of the Core Knowledge Foundation worked with more than two thousand parents and teachers to create a book that children will enjoy while they learn.

Not Free SF Reader 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A book for children, but not too bad for that. A bored girl, her brothers and others get mixed up in an adventure across the space-time continuum by way of some nifty tesseract tricks.

When a strange older woman comes visiting they set off to find the father of all these children, who is a prisoner of one of your standard supervillains, a giant disembodied telepathic brain.

Not a Fighter 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I re-read this book from my childhood and I'm very disappointed with particular messages Madeleine presents to children. I think enough has been said about stars (angels?) being conceived as witches to "play a joke" on everyone and the centaur appearance of the other "angels". No matter what the rest of the story conveys, I am completely revulsed by the notion she presents that Jesus was a fighter. He is not a fighter, but represents peace & love spreading the word of the Father on this earth for all to follow. Also, Jesus has already won the battle for us. All of these ignorant statements in this book by Madeleine need to be pulled before I will even think about looking at this book or sharing it with others.
