Editorial Review:

Unlike an anthology of children's literature, which includes only chapters or summaries, this outstanding seventh edition teaches how to make appropriate judgments about what constitutes quality children's literature. Using the critical standards for all literature, explanations are supplemented by special issues in judging books for children. Taking readers through the definitions of literary terms by reviewing plot, character, theme, setting, point of view, style, and tone, and including special sections on censorship and the importance of reading aloud, Lukens provides sound criteria for assessing the merit of children's books. The book also includes chapters on rhymes, poetry, biography, and informational books. Emphasis is placed on multicultural literature, making it a book intended for use with a wide variety of children's books. For anyone interested in children's literature, education, language arts, and/or educational media.

I run a daycare and bought these books to help guide our daily activities. I've only been using it for a few weeks, but love it. I also bought the Daily Curriculum book co-authored also by Pam Schiller, who helped write this one. They have a lot of similar things, but enough different that I kept them both. There is lots of ideas in the book for kids with varying interests and it's made planning educational stuff a lot easier for me.

1 Thumb up... 3 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book expecting oodles of great ideas...One great thing is the way that it organizes themes with each unit broken down into days and learning centers. However, the actual ideas are pretty general and although some are interesting, I have definitely found better ones- some of them don't even seem to correlate with the theme they are listed under...

I did get some good ideas, but would suggest 2 much better options for the money that provide more themed ideas with details rather than just general activities. Try: "The Complete Daily Curriculum" by: Pam Schiller and Pat Phipps AND "Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom" by: Judy Herr

Editorial Review:

This resource supplies 25 two-week themes, with a total of over 2,000 activities and ideas. Paperback, 463 pages.

Great contents with lovely color in Math, Basic skills, Social studies, Science and Language arts. With it my kid has fun in playing. Through it I sharpen my kid's related skills. My kid enjoys it very much. It worths my recommendation.

Not what I thought it would be! 3 out of 5 stars.

I thought this book was kind of a disappointment. I homeschool my children, and like to be able to use some workbooks when doing certain themes, or when doing the alphabet, but this book just jumps from topic to topic every page you turn. It's ok to use for worksheets here and there, but I really don't use it all that much. I think it was just a little too easy for her.

Editorial Review:

Children will enjoy dozens of fun activities in these all-new multicurriculum workbooks. Each workbook has 64 pages of essential skills exercises in language arts, math, science, and social studies. Use these books to review, reinforce or accelerate learning.

Children's mathematics; Cognitive Guided Instruction 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Excellent resource for those wishing to guide students from informal understanding of solving word problems to problem solving. The authors' examples of the various problem types coupled with explanations and strategically placed video clips (CD included) guide even the most novice CGI instructor to a clear understanding of the problems and expected student strategies, classroom environment and expectations needed to implement this teaching strategy.

An excellent tool 5 out of 5 stars.

This book revolutionized the way that I taught math in my classroom. I was a more informed instructor, and it allowed me to group, scaffold, and individualize my instruction. The year that I implemented these techniques into my fifth grade class, we made an average of two years growth in one year! Highly recommend this one!

Editorial Review:

Children's Mathematics was written to help you understand children's intuitive mathematical thinking and use that knowledge to help children learn mathematics with understanding.

Great Questions for Teachers! 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

As a speech-language pathologist in an elementary school, I am very interested in materials that encourage good math communication, logical reasoning and use of math language. This book is different from most other problem-solving books in that it concisely provides questions on 16 diffferent math topics for grades K-2, 3-4 and 5-6 - all of which lend themselves well to creative math discussions. Our district math committee chose to have a copy of this book in each elementary school. After looking through it, I was convinced that I needed a copy of my own to quickly refer to when seeing my students. This was $10.85 that was well-spent!

Editorial Review:

Open-ended questions, coined "good questions" by the authors, can prompt children to think creatively and critically. This useful book helps teachers define good questions, offers teachers tips on how to create their own good questions, and presents a wide variety of sample questions that span 16 mathematical topics, including number, measurement, geometry, probability, and data.

A Force To Be Reckoned With 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

G.S. Morrison? Jo Ann Brewer? Feeney, Christensen, & Moracivik? Watch Out!

This text packs some major punch...quite unexpectantly.

I've been waiting for this new edition from Gordon & Brown for four years. The last book was pretty intriguing. It had some very well-written sections on DAP, but this book takes a giant leap forward.

The key to a good early childhood introductory textbook is four-fold: (1) affordable, (2) comprehensive, but...,(3)...succinct, and (4) evidence-based. I think this book makes major improvements in three/four parts over the last edition.

Unfortunately, this book is not affordable compared to G.S. Morrison's FUNDAMENTALS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION or Brewer's INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION which are both under 100 bucks. This book is $103.00. Not good for the money-struggling undergrad or vocational student:(

The other three areas are where it soars pretty, surprisingly high.

It's quite comprehensive, a bit more than Brewer's text and a lot more than Morrison's text, especially in the theoretical parts. Morrison, nor Brewer talks about the transactional aspect of constructivism. Feeney et al's WHO AM I IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN aludes to it, but that's it. Consequently, BEGINNINGS & BEYOND has new knowledge that these other heavyweights are not pulling.

Compared to Feeney et. al.'s thorough but somewhat drawn out style, this book is as clear as glass. They hit the basics, tell the details, and move on. Sometime's Feeney's book overwhelms while Brewer's and Morrison's books underwhelm. Gordon & Browne...almost get it just right...almost.

I think that an excellent textbook should integrate research into the content because that is where it comes from. Morrison rarely did this in his book while Brewer and Feeney sometimes too zealously integrated it. Gordon & Browne do it sparingly...only when necessary. That's a good approach for an intro text.

Do we have a new champion???

Editorial Review:

Beginnings and Beyond, Foundations in Early Childhood Education, 7e, is the most comprehensive foundations book on the market. With the blend of a simple approach to learning, and the depth required to practically apply the material, this book will appeal to all levels of students, and teachers. Diversity and development are woven throughout the material and are highlighted by chapter icons within the margin for easy reference. This feature helps the reader to understand that issues of age, gender, race/ethnicity, ability, and family are part of every aspect of teaching and learning. This comprehensive, yet easy to understand approach makes this an excellent book for a foundations course, curriculum course, or reference for teachers at all levels.

a wonderful teaching resource 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Effective Reading Strategies: Teaching Children Who Find Reading Difficult is a wonderful handbook for teachers who need ideas for those children who need extra support in learning to read. The clear writing and the many excellent research-based examples make this title one that teachers will turn to again and again. I particularly like Chapter 6, Nurturing Fluent Reading. Fluency strategies are often neglected, and can not only improve student fluency but also their comprehension. I highly recommend this book!

A Tried and True 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Rasinski's book offers a motivational read regarding effective reading strategies for all readers. He refers to many case studies on what current, effective, research proven instructional methods create the most success for struggling readers. This book would be a great read for teacher trainees working in the field of reading, university level professors looking for a text for reading remediation, and any primary level teacher. Information provided in the book is well worth the cost.

Editorial Review:

This practical book clearly defines the reading and writing process and demonstrates how to assist students with reading difficulties. It offers an easy-to-read format that includes an extensive and rich digest of instructional strategies that have been proven effective in helping children who experience difficulty in learning to read. Strategies and stories in teachers' voices help make this book useful and inviting. For educators and school administrators.

Editorial Review:

Math and Science for Young Children 4E focuses on the integration of mathematics and science with other subject areas for children from birth through age eight. Based on theories of child development and learning, this book is compatible with guidelines and standards of many national professional organizations. Mathematics and science concepts are related to national standards and present a common framework for inclusion with music and movement, language arts, visual arts, science and social studies activities. Problem-solving is emphasized as the means for constructing concepts with a balance of naturalistic, informal, and structured activities and experiences. Units are sequenced developmentally from prekindergarten through the primary levels. Each concept unit includes assessment, instructional, and evaluation strategies. Developmentally appropriate assessment is promoted through observation, recording of anecdotal records, checklists, video and audio tapes, and performance evaluations. The book also offers information on materials and Web resources, technology, setting up learning centers, active approaches to math and science, and parent involvement. The appendices provide additional material, assessment tasks, children’s books with math and science concepts, and the code of practice on the appropriate and safe use of animals in schools.
